Nobody is likeable
micibob28 November 2023
Nobody is likeable. Everyone is "cute" and also a horrible person. Parents that treat their son like he is the least important person in the world. Super annoying passive aggressive mother, dummy clueless father and the ex fiancé that's entitled and won't return the engagement ring.

Other than that it was a cheap semi- innocent move. I am confused about who the target audience is. There was a mention of tingling balls and threesomes so not really a family friendly movie.

It's a very cheap and simple movie, which would be ok if it wasn't for pushing of some annoying messages (like not believing in covid) and bad characters.

Pretend it's a big gag and you'll have a good time....

5.6/10

It's cuffing season and whether cuffed or not it's time to get on the train, sit at the back and observe the cuffed folk.

"Just cause I dumped him doesn't mean I have to dump his family. Besides they love me."

Based on the title alone it's a romantic Christmas comedy movie that goes exactly as you'd expect. The thing that did it for me was the sarcasm. It's not a savage film by any stretch of the imagination, but it gives moments where you think "yes, that is the appropriate response in this situation."

While it does have it quirks and odd moments of enjoyment it truly falls flat on its face. The story is not great by any means. It's mediocre at best. It falls in line with being a Hallmark film without actually being a Hallmark film so there's truly no surprises.

My biggest peeve in this film was the fact that things looked blurry and scratchy for the second half of the film. People and objects looked out of focus. It was weird.

Overall, if you like sarcasm and a little bit of family drama then you could potentially find something in this film. I laughed for a good chunk of it because the jokes and banter weren't bad. The story is mediocre, the acting isn't strong, and the film feels out of focus for the second half.

That's all for now. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Until next time.... Enjoy the show!

All Wrapping and No Gift
gbyzp11 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Let's be honest - the rom-com formula has been done to the extreme.

No matter how hard writers try to find a unique angle - the formula remains pretty much the same.

This movie rides that line of finding a new approach like - exes being forced to spend Christmas together with family.

Rather than being a heartwarming reunion, the family makes the son feel less welcome than the nasty ex-fiance.

There is a bet between the two exes on who will get to stay with the family for Christmas, REALLY?

I guess they figured they had Robbie Amell as the shiny sparkly wrapping that none of the characters needed to have any substance underneath.

In spite of the above, it does have a few entertaining moments.

I give it a solid 6 stars, do with that what you will.

Not cute not funny
WeWatchMovies24 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is genuinely awful, horrible, blasphemous, hateful and just really bad. I like Robbie Amell and Leighton Maester...usually, however the characters they play are awful; his parents even more. The premise is ok, we've seen it before and it can be done well but whoever wrote these characters and their actions fails big time. Checks all the correct boxes of course since it's a new movie so covers all the diverseness in just one family, go figure (including faux "date-ees"). The mother is clueless her accidental comments that are supposed to be naive and funny fall flat and just end up nasty. The dad is not a smart guy, the sister ridiculous, the obviously adopted brother might as well have been nonexistent as his character was irrelevant.

So onward, his exfiance breaks up with him and breaks his heart because he's not engaged in the relationship because he works too much, she stays in touch with his family behind his back and when he says he can't come home due to a deadline, they invite her (although it seems they had already done that) because she's so "lovely". When he surprises them of course she's there and the badness ensues. The loving family cares more about her than their own son and constantly pick her over him. They then bet to get the other out before Christmas and the hatefulness begins, in one instance she instigates him overflowing the toilet on the second floor, can you tell me what part of that is funny, can you?? S

Someone repeatedly steals the baby Jesus from the nativity scene out front and it's ok and "funny" to replace it with odd toys from home depot that all have Jesus hair and beards and that's supposed to be funny? I found it absurd and blasphemous, another play on un-christianing America yet again, at Christmas no less. Chemistry is no where in sight between the too and even if it was there the family antics and complete selfishness and cluelessness is a complete turn off.

Didn't even finish it, having the flu would have been better. I'm sure they get together again and blah blah blah but who cares. Waste of talent and time.

Cute, tingly, fun
bt698nhj22 November 2023
I am a curmudgeon who doesn't watch many Christmas movies. I have no idea why I watched this, except Amazon kept pushing it in my face on my home screen on my Fire TV. Anyhoo, I'm so glad I did. It was fun, it was cute, it was tingly, it was emotional, it was irreverent, it was well done.

ABOUT MY REVIEWS:

I do not include a synopsis of the film/show -- you can get that anywhere and that does not constitute a meaningful review -- but rather my thoughts and feelings on the film that hopefully will be informative to you in deciding whether to invest 90-180 minutes of your life on it.

My scale: 1-5 decreasing degrees of "terrible", with 5 being "mediocre" 6- OK. Generally held my interest OR had reasonable cast and/or cinematography, might watch it again 7 - Good. My default rating for a movie I liked enough to watch again, but didn't rise to the upper echelons 8- Very good. Would watch again and recommend to others 9- Outstanding. Would watch over and over; top 10% of my ratings 10 - A classic. (Less than 2% receive this rating). For Lifetime Movies for Chicks (LMFC), drop the above scale by 3 notches. A 6 is excellent and 7 almost unattainable.

Well, it was a comedy, I guess.
SPZMaxinema20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
There were at least some good moments and humor in this film, no doubt. Some of the acting some of the time was decent but overall it was pretty generic. A few of the characters were also good, I liked his sister played by Veronika Slowikowska. The plot is very predictable (if you're someone who's seen a lot of movies/rom coms before). There was one hockey scene toward the end that felt very sudden and out of place, however I guess it was needed so that the father could have his heart attack and so that the family/couple could have their serious and emotional moment that helps resolve everything. You can just see stuff coming a mile away and it can be pretty eye-roll worthy.

Avoid at all costs!
fadia_m2517 December 2023
This is probably one of the worst Christmas rom coms that I have ever seen. The lead characters lacked so much chemistry and I couldn't connect with the plot! I disliked the fact that the ex-gf felt so entitled to be part of the family and could not root for her at all. Throughout the movie, I was praying the couple would not end up together; it made no sense. None of the other characters were believable and everyone including the lead actors looked like they were acting. This movie deserves a rating in the negative numbers! The only saving grace to this movie are the Christmas decorations!!!!

I enjoyed it except for...
sunflower-176-61152224 December 2023
I enjoyed this, and it had a bit of humor. The thing that I like most was at the conversations between the people seemed for real, not just scripted. I mean, they were scripted, of course, but they didn't sound like it.

What I didn't like is that so many movies seem to be pushing the gay agenda. If someone were to come here from another planet and watched this movie and so many others these days they would think that a much higher percentage of the population was gay than it actually is.

Other than that there was something very different about this movie. The conversations seemed real, not just scripted as I said.

Not great
tonirankin22 December 2023
I wanted to like this, cause it kept coming up on Freevee to watch but no one in this thing is even remotely likeable. I hated them all. They are just all yucky people.

What kind of family likes their son's ex who left him better than him? And why would they treat him so badly and her so good?

The attraction between the leads was not there. They were so awful to each other and just in general that it made no sense for them to want to get together.

I guess it was ok for what it was, but maybe I just prefer older movies that are actually good. But this one is not good, not even sort of good. It's just not.

Just a fun xmas romcom
sortmaster25 December 2023
I wonder if I watched the same movie as these people giving 1/10s here. Granted, it doesn't do anything shocking to move the genre forward, so I don't expect a massive critical response, but if you're just looking for a cute xmas movie with a few laughs, this fits the bill nicely.

The acting is good, the pacing is good, the jokes landed for me, I thought it covered the bases for a pleasant Sunday easy-watching experience.

If you like movies like The Proposal, I think you'll be happy watching this.

There were a few comments complaining about the treatment of Christianity but I would consider it mild humor in good fun and those people overly sensitive.

I would give 0 if I could
abbeyandre-9591410 December 2023
The most heinous movie ever I feel like it would be better if it was a friend group but your own family liking your ex fiancé more and then the ex having the audacity to show up and STAY I can't believe I watched the whole thing and I was so excited because I love leighton meester...ALSO HER AWFUL AWFUL BANGS!!!!! If the bangs were not there I mayyybe more inclined to like her but they were!!!Another thing that made me hate it is because it is just a walking ad. Every 30 seconds I was being promoted something. I do not like it when I am forced to hate a woman and I had no choice but to hate!!!!!

We enjoyed it.
aciarleglio-120 November 2023
If you want to watch a fun light Christmas movie this is a good film to watch. It may not have be groundbreaking or any type of holiday masterpiece but it was funny and made me think about getting ready for family Christmas. I found the main characters mother and family's to be very funny. I highly recommend this movie to get into Christmas spirit along with remembering what dating was like around the holidays. Especially the ex, the girl that got away! The small town feel and winter of Wisconsin added to the Christmas atmosphere. It was much like a decent Hallmark Christmas movie with more comedy. I may have to add this to my yearly Christmas movies.

Good cute light watch
d_penn25 December 2023
I loved this movie! The actors are all great and so is their chemistry together. It's a funny movie but nothing seems forced or too out there. Obviously has a bigger budget than Hallmark or Lifetime holiday movies which is evident and nice. The snow doesn't look fake lol. Very cute movie! I've already recommend it to others in my circle. No idea why the reviews weren't great but I'm very glad I gave it a chance anyway! A lot of people seem "Butthurt" by the "plenty of crackers" comment when it came to Catholics. As well as the sign of the cross and lastly the stuff animals replacing the baby Jesus in the manger. I look at it as don't take it so seriously.

worst movie I've ever seen
tiasjungle24 November 2023
I made this account solely to review this movie. This is by far the worst, cringiest movie I have ever seen. If you want to be insanely uncomfortable for an hour and a half?? This movie is for you. The director tried so hard to make the movie funny but has no idea what humor is. The best part of the movie is the end credits.. when you no longer have to suffer through the worst writing you'll ever see. I wouldn't be surprised if the script was the results of asking ai to write a 2023 themed comedy Christmas special about 2 exs spending Xmas together, seriously horrible movie. I would rather stare at a blank wall for 2 hours than have to sit through this again. Nothing in this movie makes sense either 😭

Easy fun watch
nkhcpxdn27 November 2023
It was such a fun easy going movie to just enjoy.

It didn't shove any political issues down your throat, it didn't start any drama or weird social discussions that's seem to be everywhere in movies and tv these days.

It's a fun easy viewing experience and I could watch this again and again this Christmas. Thank you for being back normal tv.

It's about Christmas, romance and family. Which is exactly what I want in a movie. And it happens to have two of my favourite actors starring in the movie so that was a cherry on top.

I loved the characters and the plot was fun to see unraveling, the jokes were good, the actors did good. I'm very happy with the film.

Psychology Examples
franktorelli31 December 2023
This is a wonderful example Anna Freud's ego defense mechanism; Reaction Formation!

Often when one or both people try to suppress positive emotions? They will try to counteract with avoidance or even outright hostility in order to avoid true emotions.

I once counseled a couple living with her family. The psychiatrist in charge explained that the home was extremely chaotic. After I inquired, he explained that the biggest problem was that the husband, a soldier who recently returned after two tours during "Stop-Loss" and the wife's sister were "always after each other."

I inquired if that was like arguing and fighting or sexually. He responded, "It's exactly the very same thing."

Truly Awful
mweratcliffe24 November 2023
A very confused TV movie. Is a hateful family loving? Is an "ex" having an ongoing relationship with your family behind your back (after a 6month engagement) loving? Is a baby Jesus being repeatedly stolen and replaced with dinosaurs respectful. Is your father talking about his balls tingling really family friendly fun. The whole show is filled with absurd ideology. Dad "doesn't think covid is real" Mom is "always UP!" even when its obvious she's down. The daughter is a lesbian and the woman who the romantic lead dates is wanting a 3some with her male friend. Yes all of these things happen in the real world including people who run fireplace videos on their TV during the holidays. The thing is that the way these elements were incorporated into this show feels totally artificial and awkward. In the end I disliked every character and felt that this show was truly awful.

Very cute, fun movie

This was a nice funny and sweetly romantic holiday film. Good clean fun. I did not know some of the actors and was pleasantly surprised by the entire cast. A movie they should all be proud of.

Narcissist's Fantasy
johnspringer-954402 December 2023
A pair of cloying idiots invites their son's ex-fiancee to spend Christmas with them because they're selfish grandkid-starved busybodies. Said ex-fiancee accepts because she's a delusional narcissistic psychopath. (I didn't know narcissists celebrated Christmas as their own birthdays are more important to them than those of anyone else, including Jesus, but whatever.)

To the target audience for this vapid farce I would say: no, borderline personality disorder woman who's lonely at the holidays, in reality your ex's family does not think you're so awesome that they'd rather hang out with you than him. And no, he does not want you back. In fact they're all so relieved you're out of his life for good that they'd rather let you keep the ring than ever contact you to try to get it back.

Obviously this is supposed to be a goofy romcom and not taken seriously, but the setup is so distasteful and the characters are so unappealing that it goes down about as well as rancid eggnog.

Love is in the (cold) air
kosmasp11 March 2024
No pun intended - the title itself is more of a pun though, right? Not sure if my "joke" is holding up to that. But that does not matter - if you follow me I reckon, than you know my humor, you are familiar with it and roll with it. Same is true for a person you have dated before - you may feel there is no love lost ... there is nothing there ... but there is a knowing warm feeling with that person.

There is also conflict of course - which is important ... not so much for dramatic purpose but for comedic stuff. Which is true here - I do not believe that anyone watching this will be surprised by the outcome/ending of the movie. That said, the actors have fun with it and the dialog is also fun to listen to ... the actors know what they do. Like it or not - you should be able to tell beforehand ...

Waste of life minutes
sdbond-1667117 December 2023
Robbie Amell is good in this movie but the rest of the cast is silly and annoying. I don't mind cheesy movies because they are usually cute. This movie is not cute. It is aggravating and Meester is awful. Her character is as bad as her haircut. There is so much more out there to watch. Do not waste your time with this one. I am actually still watching as I warn the rest of you. I am hoping some how he finds someone else but I know we won't be that lucky. He should have left day one when his family shoved her in his face. Maybe this could've worked better if Meester's character wasn't so obnoxious. It's a shame. I usually like her.

Flawed but fun
itachi-7326421 November 2023
For real though, this movie was way more fun than it had any right to be. The humore was spot on in so many places, and all the actors and actresses embodied and delivered their roles so well, while being relatively under-the-radar stars.

I loved how we had some genuine moments of emotion and vulnerability, which you dont always see in a christmas movie, as well as it being a somewhat novel concept, especially for me.

It was pretty goofy, and lighthearted, with almost no profanity or raunchy content, which i so appreciated. I'd definitely have a some cpuples friends over and watch this again for some good laughs.

Unwrapping Disappointment Under the Mistletoe
natmavila30 November 2023
In the world of Christmas rom-coms, 'EXMas' attempts to deck the halls but ends up tangling the lights. The film's premise - Graham (played with a surprising lack of charisma) surprises his family for Christmas, only to find his ex-fiancée cozily ensconced with them - could have been a recipe for festive fun. Instead, it's more like overcooked turkey: dry and hard to swallow. The script lumbers from one contrived situation to another, leaning heavily on tired tropes and a telegraphed plot that could have been written by a festive fortune cookie.

The acting is as artificial as a plastic Christmas tree. Graham's family, intended to provide comic relief, instead deliver lines with the enthusiasm of someone reading a microwave manual. And the ex-fiancée? She's as warmly engaging as a snowman in a blizzard. The chemistry between the leads is non-existent, making their inevitable reconciliation as believable as Santa fitting down a modern chimney. The film's attempt at humor relies heavily on awkward dinner table jokes that make you cringe rather than chuckle, and the forced sentimentality is as subtle as a flashing neon reindeer.

Yes, the snowy scenes are picturesque, and the Christmas decorations are on point, but they can't mask the movie's fundamental flaws. 'EXMas' is like that gaudy, over-the-top Christmas sweater: it might catch your eye, but you wouldn't want to be seen with it for too long. In short, this film is the cinematic equivalent of finding coal in your stocking - a disappointment you didn't really want but somehow saw coming.

If you are searching for an actual CHRISTMAS movie it is not this one
ghassanstefan21 November 2023
The story and the twist are nice for a Christmas holiday movie. However, a recurring element in the film involves losing the baby Jesus statue from the Christmas decorations, and replacing it with various fluffy or rubber toys. This seems unrelated to the movie's main plot. Additionally, a dog snatching the rubber toy with its mouth further adds an unnecessary element that could be seen as disrespectful to Jesus and Christianity. If the goal was to create a genuine Christmas movie, such moments may need reconsideration. They actually wanted to go with the X-mas naming but they did it with a twite of Ex-mas. I didn't like the movie and would not recommend it to someone who wants to watch an actual Christmas spirit movie.

Cute movie! Not to be taken seriously
ReviewNSumNumbers19 November 2023
So I've been a fan of Leighton Meester since the Roommate movie, and I've only recently become a fan of Robbie Arnell (because of the Upload show on Prime Video--I love that show!)

I also happen to love romcoms where both the leads are good looking, don't we all?? Lol I think that Robbie and Leighton have decent chemistry in this film. Not as good as Robbie's chemistry with Andy in Upload.

There are a lot of funny moments in this movie and honestly, it bounces all over the place, plot wise, but essentially remains a comedy. I'm really shocked that such a serious scene was included in a film like this. The supporting cast was great and had me wishing I had a family like this by the end! The ending scene (not the sister scene but the family running scene) was really funny.

I didn't really feel like Robbie's calks with his job were believable and so by the end of the film, I didn't even care. Maybe if we were shown his boss getting angry on the other line or on a zoom call, it would've felt like there were more stakes. We only ever see Robbie working in his laptop like ONCE!

I don't think this film was meant to be taken too seriously. It's a film that knows what it is and just asks its audience to sit back and have some laughs.
