The Embroiderer
Director: Brillante Mendoza // Writer: Zig Dulay
Brillante Mendoza, one of the most notable directors working in the Philippines, has had constant output since his controversial win as Best Director for Kinatay at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival (he’d received previous murmurs of international renown for titles like 2008’s Service and 2005 debut The Masseur. He’s been quiet since the underwhelming experimental horror film Sapi in 2013, while other titles, like 2012’s Thy Womb, are often delayed considerably before reaching the Us. While 2014 was absent a new Mendoza title, earlier in the year it was revealed that his latest project, The Embroiderer, had received funding (along with a documentary he was simultaneously working on). While the film concerns an 83-year-old woman whose embroidery business is on the verge of bankruptcy, we wonder if Mendoza’s regular muse Mercedes Cabral will play a part somewhere in the mix.

A storm is coming and its bringing with it to Manila a rapidly escalating sense of dread. There would be panic, perhaps, were there any outlet for such an emotion but with the city on lockdown as water levels rise there is simply no opportunity for such a thing. Instead it brings with it anxiety of a sweaty, feral intensity and the sense that the entire city is simply stewing in its own sins and that those sins will soon consume all.Filipino blogger and critic Dodo Dayao makes his feature debut with Violator, a gorgeously executed and tightly controlled exercise in religious dread. It is a film that takes very seriously the notion that evil is all around and within us. Like Brillante Mendoza's Sapi...

Check out the trailer and the poster for Sapi at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. Stars Dennis Trillo, Meryll Soriano and Baron Geisler. Brillante Ma Mendoza directs the horror from the script by Henry Burgos. Cinematography by Jeffrey Dela Cruz, editing by Kats Serraon, music by Gian Gianan, while Larry Castillo produces. With the rival station Philippine Broadcasting Channel (Pbc) eating up the TV audiences' major share, Sarimanok Broadcasting Network (Sbn) needs a miracle to stay alive in the competition. In these mad and fearful times, Sbn's news team finds that documenting an actual spiritual possession would be their only hope.

To call Brillante Mendoza a prolific filmmaker would be something of an understatement. In the past eight years the Filipino director has directed eleven films, all successes on the festival circuit—he’s something of a Cannes favorite at this point—and as his latest film, “Sapi,” the director's first straight-up horror movie, premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival tonight, we’re debuting the film’s first poster. Described as a “media satire,” Mendoza’s new film marks his first foray into the horror genre as it follows two competing television news teams as they chase a variety of leads, gradually zeroing in on an impending and possibly apocalyptic storm, and a middle-aged teacher who may or may not be possessed by a demon. Sounds good to us. While many weren’t exactly thrilled with Mendoza’s “Kinatay” in Cannes of 2009—there were plenty of walkouts that year—the jury that year,...

Outclassing Venice this year in terms of quantity (and we’ll soon see in perhaps quality), 2013′s Toronto International Film Festival’s Vanguard section sees programmer Colin Geddes happily working with a flood of film items that could have easily have been featured in the Midnight Madness section. Alongside world premieres for Simon & Zeke Hawkins’ We Gotta Get Out of This Place, Zack Parker’s Proxy, Juan Cavestany’s People In Places and Yeon Sang-ho’s The Fake, the fest lassoed notable premium offerings in the likes of Alexandre Aja’s Horns, Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani’s sophomore pic The Strange Color of Your Body’s Tears and (also skipping the Lido) and Brillante Mendoza’s Sapi.

Tiff’s Midnight Madness selection is usually where we find all of the horror films, but the Vanguard selection features Ti West’s latest film, The Sacrament, and Alexandre Aja’s Horns, starring Daniel Radcliffe:
“Toronto — The Toronto International Film Festival® Vanguard programme takes audiences on a sensory rollercoaster ride with boundary-pushing international works that are bold and bodacious. Curated by international programmer Colin Geddes, this lineup brings the best in genre and arthouse together for a cinematic odyssey that eludes conventional definition.
“From revenge and ruin to sex, drugs and taxation, this programme challenges audiences to go places that noaudience has gone before,” said Geddes. “Where Midnight Madness opens up audiences to a world of fear and fantasy, Vanguard plunges them into a confrontational and unnerving one that sometimes comes a bit too close to reality for comfort.”

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival selection grew quite a bit today as the organizers announced the Midnight Madness, Documentary, Vanguard, City to City and Cinematheque selections for this year's festival. Among the title announced there aren't exactly a ton of names that pop off the paper immediately. The Midnight Madness selection will open with Lucky McKee's All Cheerleaders Die in which a young girl who practices the dark arts turns on her best friend after she joins the cheer squad. However, I assume most attention will be on Eli Roth's The Green Inferno, a film in which a group of humanitarians go to the Amazon to help a native tribe only to have the tribe kidnap them and later learn their cannibalistic heritage is very much intact. The Documentary selection includes plenty of familiar faces such as Marcel Ophuls, Claude Lanzmann and Errol Morris and Frank Pavich will be bringing Jodorowsky's Dune,...

Best known for his gritty arthouse dramas, Filipino auteur Brillante Mendoza is taking a turn into dark genre territory with his latest effort - a horror film titled Sapi (Possession).
