Silina is an excellent adaptation of "The King and I." Two thumbs up!

Myriam Fares steals hearts in this charming adaptation of "The King and I." Silina is a musical adaptation of an Arabic version of "The King and I" called "Hala wa Al-Malek." Silina is a well acted, lively, musical romantic comedy. Characters wear traditional Lebanese opera masks and traditional costumes. This movie is fun, lively, and has sleek dancing. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and find it charming and fascinating. The songs are catchy and fun.

Myriam Fares plays Hala, a peasant maiden who is in love with a charming idealistic thug and is simultaneously the object of the King's romantic attention. Hala is forced to choose between a life as a spoiled princess with an evil old man and a life as a peasant maiden with a commoner for a husband. She looks truly dazzling with a Lebanese peasant's dress on and wearing an opera mask. This is one of the best foreign films of the 21st century, it ranks in my own opinion with Persepolis as an exemplary cultural emblem of the Middle East in cinema.
