Great cinematography, promising story, excellent setting, irritating characters.
rooprect12 April 2019
After the movie ended, I struggled to reason why I hated it. I loved the first half (the slow mood-setting buildup and thick atmosphere), but once the action started happening, I started getting irritated. The action itself was well paced and unpredictable enough, but the characters' reactions (in particular the bizarre amoral yet judgmental attitude of the main character Anna) were what killed it for me, and I found myself not caring about her or anyone in the story.

For example, Anna commits a heinous act, possibly while under the influence of heavy medication and or supernatural forces. When she realizes what she has done, there's no hint of remorse but instead she immediately shifts into criminal mode, deftly covering her tracks like mob boss, even using sex as a manipulative tool, but then in the next scene she's hypocritically freaking out at her boyfriend for daring to show concern about her pill popping. Also in that scene she does the WORST cliché of a lover's quarrel: she smacks him out of nowhere, and HE apologizes. The film lost about 2 points right there.

The 2nd half of the film is rife with moments like that. She continues doing awful things while treating her boyfriend like he's the villain and she's the victim. Oh throw in a bizarre ghost who was also a horrible person in life but now on a righteous revenge mission, and we have a bona fide amorality tale where we're supposed to sympathize with characters who don't deserve a drop of sympathy.

It's a shame that the characters (mostly Anna) weren't developed more consistently, or at least in a likeable way, because as I said up front, the cinematography and mood setting was masterfully done. The setting was striking as well: set in the gorgeous vast, barren landscape of Joshua Tree in a remote glass house with no curtains. And the story had a ton of promise.

Instead this film is an unfortunate example of how everything can be working for a movie, but if you don't like the characters the whole thing will fall apart.

Joshua Tree 30212

Warning: Spoilers
Writer with mental problems alone in an isolated house. Things go bump in the night and a dark secret is slowly revealed.

Solid story that builds creepiness, then turns promisingly weird at 45 mins. But it falls into the class of psychological thriller using ghosts to beef up the tension.

The acting is good, but the heroine is a dull character. Insomnia, alcohol dependency, sleep paralysis, prescription pills - something seriously wrong with her, but the screenplay shows no quirks, flamboyance, humour. Flat effect, and the dialogue really doesn't help.

In the end her character has nothing to do with it - she was just an accidental conduit. And yet she has the blood of two innocent men on her hands - who cares?

The pace and music are good, but the final sequence is hectic - like they're trying to rush the unsatisfying ending off the stage. And of course another plot that gets the implausible cops-will-be-here-any-minute treatment - always a sign of weak story-telling.

Overall, good build up but it missed the chance to go full ghost and deliver on the weirdness. Make the heroine the villain and you have good horror.

STAY IN CONTROL
nogodnomasters25 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Anna Parker (Kate French) is a blogger who desires to be screen play writer. She likes her booze and pills. She takes her pills, has bad dreams, and then takes another pill. Her boyfriend and agent Paul (Steven Brand) decides she needs to rewrite her draft and takes her away to the glass house in Joshua Tree, in what seems to be the new filming spot for films. While there, she meets the neighbor Jeremy (Steve Hanks) who lives nearby in a trailer. Anna's episodes escalate as things get weirder and secrets unveiled.

The film was rather boring as a horror thriller. The escalation of events didn't seem to be well thought out and didn't create the scare factor. At one point the sound track hinted at Native American drums, indicating the disruption of a sacred Indian burial site. But that was not the case. Sound tracks are suppose to enhance clues, not be red herrings. Of course during the whole thing you don't know how much of the story was real or Anna's imagination. In fact PLOT SPOILER we still don't know at the end. Perhaps that is the "clever" feature of the film is that it offers no closure.

Rental at best.

A troubled writer gets tangled up with a homicidal wendigo in this bizarre, strikingly filmed chiller.
pameladegraff19 June 2015
Scenic Joshua tree locations and modern architecture accent Echoes, a stylish supernatural thriller. In yet the latest horror happening featuring, what else, a writer summoning up the occult, independent filmmaker Nils Trim blends stalker elements with phantasmagoria and tribal mythology in this Southwest supernatural whodunit. In it, Anna (Kate French) is an aspiring writer who suffers from a few minor, common psychological issues, such as partially waking from chronic nightmares only to experience ghastly hallucinations while trapped in a state of sleep paralysis. OK, maybe that's not so minor or common.

But heavily medicated Anna has a solution that she thinks will provide good therapy for her condition: spend several days alone, mostly in her underwear, at her boyfriend's curtain-less glass house, It's OK, nobody will see her and fixate upon her -the only other person around for miles is a shadowy, lurking, unshaven man with no fixed address or US citizenship, who's squatting in a decaying trailer a few hundred meters away. There will be plenty of peace and quiet. too. This plot of land, renowned for the perplexing, fatal disappearance of its previous owner, is so isolated from civilization, there's not even any cell phone reception.

Makes sense.

What could possibly go wrong with this idea?

Well, plenty as it turns out, when Anna promptly runs afoul of an apparent wendigo -a particularly malignant one -who fixates upon and sets out to possess her. Plenty of strange occurrences ensue, some of which demand that we accept characters' unlikely choices, and forgive lengthy exposition at the end revealing a complex and melodramatically sensational back-story explanation. But then this is horror, and horror tales and movies often require that we accept melodramatically sensational back-stories, because if we insist upon being too logically demanding and analytic, we might reject the ideas of monsters and ghosts altogether.

So we shall allow Echoes to take its artistic license with the credible, we will enjoy its unusual twists and unpredictable, if not illogical turns, because in addition to having some tense moments which are really scary (an increasingly rare commodity in horror movies), Echoes showcases arresting locations and surreal dream sequences emphasized by striking cinematography.

Viewers may recognize actor Steven Brand, who plays Ana's boyfriend, from The Scorpion King, and the HBO series The Mind of the Married Man, and Kate French from horror movies Sutures and Channeling. Perhaps the most interesting cast members in Echoes however are cute Oxley, the dog who plays Ana's canine companion "Shadow," with almost human expressiveness, and in a sense, the boyfriend's modernist glass house itself, which features prominently in the film and bears a strong resemblance to the historic Stahl House, a Los Angeles landmark used as a location in numerous films, photo-shoots and ads.

A Complete Yawn Fest
dfa12037410 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
There seems to be a strange misconception among young, wannabe filmmakers that horror films are the easiest genre to tackle in order to get noticed. While this was very much true in the past, nowadays it's not the easy gateway that it once was, primarily because it's nearly impossible to come up with an original idea or a satisfying enough twist on a familiar one to warrant an entire film being made.

Echoes is the kind of flat, uninspired film that only seems to have been made to prove that writer/director Nils Timm could make one. It made no difference to him that it's a massive pile of clichés or that its story makes little to no sense.

The problem is that it will make a big difference to those unfortunate enough to sit through it, for they will be treated to a lazily-written film that has nothing to offer anyone looking for a little bit of thrills and chills. At the very least, viewers will be able to play the "plothole game," where you simply add up the number of inexplicable events as the film goes on, including why someone would build a glass house in the middle of the desert, why this couple would want to go stay there, why Anna would choose to be stranded out in the middle of nowhere in her condition, and many more.

It's not that it's a badly made film, but rather that the screenplay was simply a mess and it's thanks to this lazy and amateurishly-written screenplay Echoes is nothing but a bland horror (if you can call it that) offering that is more likely to bore you rather than give you the slightest chill.

Clichés don't have to be a bad thing if they can be used well, but writer/director Nils Timm seems to be using them whenever possible just because he can't come up with something more original. This leaves us with a film that we feel as though we've seen several time before, concluding with the ultimate insult to the audience in its last few seconds.

This is definitely a film to avoid.

Don't see the trailer first
atinder19 April 2015
When I saw the trailer for this movie , I thought it looked really creepy and but now I wish I didn't see the trailer before the movie

As I was watching the movie , I felt like already seen half of it as the trailer so most of creepy parts in the movie

however there are some turns in the plot , which did confuse me for a while but in the end most of the movie is very predicable

There are one or two were still tad creepy but those scenes are in the trailer

The acting was okay but there were poor acting in some parts of the movie

Recall
kosmasp8 August 2016
Yes if you have seen the odd horror movie you probably can guess where this is going early on. Still it's overall decent and has a very beautiful main actress in Kate French. She may not have the chops to elevate anything in this movie (no pun intended), but at least you won't mind looking at her.

Even when she goes mental or at least starts seeing things. It takes a while for the movie to actually get into gear and there is no nudity (in case that's what you're looking for), the shock moments are OK and there is a small appearance of a former "Lost Boy" that is a nice touch, even if it's almost too short to count. I've seen worse, but I've also seen way better

Unconvincing...
teodoramonika13 February 2022
3.5 / 10.

It was interesting and had an okay mystery, but in the end I didn't like it. Also, I didn't like it because it's not well explained and has nothing to do with sleep paralysis. The acting was okay, but it's not horror.

Poorly written and acted
coloradomartinis31 August 2022
This could have been a great thriller. The idea of sisters changing lives was a great concept. But the script is poorly written. And the acting of the Leni character was poorly executed. That fake Southern accent was atrocious. And her demure was unconvincing. Half the time I didn't understand the relationship between the characters. I kept saying is that their other sister? Are those two people friends? Did these girls actually grow up in this area because everybody acts like they don't know them very well.

I decided to watch the whole thing to just find out what happened. But it was very painful. Very painful. My recommendation is don't even start it.

Not outstanding but a solid, classic revenge story
dittemiller13 April 2015
Not an outstanding story in itself except for it's concept Sleep Paralysis, but solid and a good classic revenge story. Except Billy Wirth and Steven Brand, the cast was unknown to me, but holds up the performances pretty good throughout. Lead actress is at times hard to empathize with and would have liked to feel more depth to her particular performance, but generally believable. Sleep paralysis is an intriguing phenomenon and first time I have seen this in a feature. Found myself researching for quite a while after watching the movie and was surprised this phenomenon has not been played out in a movie until now. The music is tasteful and interesting choice of house where the story plays out. Definitely has the look, pacing and feel of a European movie. The most action happens towards the end, which I would have wanted a bit more of throughout. Not a bad movie, quite unique of its kind today, so I would personally recommend it.

A boring, pointless experience
Uberkills5 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I can handle slow films. But even if a film is slow, it's got to have something interesting to keep you engaged. Echoes barely had any of it. There was nothing surprising about the story. A ghostly spirit takes a golden opportunity of using a woman's sleep paralysis problem to hijack her body to well, get revenge on her husband who killed her. That's really it. It does get suspenseful during the first half but by the time the film is going to be over, it's just exposition after exposition. Again, Echoes offered nothing new and spectacular to horror. However, on the bright side, I was quite impressed with the quality of the cinematography and the movie was filmed at some beautiful locations in the California desert. The acting was fairly decent and a minimal cast is always great too.

Not so much horror, but an interesting and visually stunning movie with just the right amount of supernatural elements
henrythomsen19788 April 2015
Frankly I did not expect much when I came across this film, as I was drawn to watch it merely for the fact it is shot in Joshua Tree, which is one of my favorite spots to visit. I must confess I enjoyed this movie a lot and it kept me on the edge of my seat, although it is not packed with horror which I expected. The movie is rather a thriller with supernatural elements, which is more my personal taste anyway so this wasn't a disappointment to me. The performances were surprisingly decent, although I at times found it hard to believe the romantic relationship between the two lead characters. In the first half hour of the movie the pace was is bit slow, but the visuals really makes up for this and then it turns into a great story with a few nice twists.

Echoes Fails to Register a Single Fright
stellbread11 August 2022
Interesting premise, poor execution. Anna Parker (French) is a writer who is at the mercy of sleep paralysis that brings about frightening visions. On the advice of her boyfriend Paul (Brand) she takes a trip to a house in the desert, where her visions become more "frightening." In actuality, there are no scares here, just a series of scenes that move at a tortoise's pace and does nothing to hold the viewer's attention. You'd get more frights from a rerun of "Pee-Wee's Playhouse." This is a Netflix film, and the quality of that service has become mediocre at best, and just think: these are the folks who knocked Blockbuster out of the game.

Prequel???
ssmorley19 April 2017
So it's not a fantastic film, but I did enjoy it. A slow start to the film, but it kept my attention and hot me thinking. The only thing annoys me about it, is the way it was ended was left open for a prequel, which would of been interesting to see where the writer would of taken it.

A pleasant surprise!
jay_parmar14 April 2015
I watched the movie without having any expectations, it is definitely not my "go to" genre of film, but I somehow found myself watching it without having to turn it off 5 minutes in.

I can say, I was quite pleasantly surprised. The suspense was captivating and the story line was unpredictable, which kept my attention. Great location, beautiful camera work and it didn't hurt that Kate French was in it.I won't put any spoilers on here, but I was surprised by the conclusion of the movie and I am sure you will be too.

The movie could have been a little faster paced and more up beat in my opinion, however, I think for the genre of film that it is, it was appropriate.

Worth watching this indie thriller!
hygge-5930910 April 2015
I feel this movie deserves my recommendation and I am glad to see it got out there. I saw this film at a small film festival in Salt Lake City and really liked it. In addition to the screening there was a Q&A with the director/writer Nils Timm and I was blown away when I heard how tiny the budget of this movie was, which made me appreciate this little film even more. It both has the look and feel of a truly mature director and storyteller. No doubt this guy has a bright future I am looking forward to seeing what he will do with a real budget in his hands. It reminded me of a great old fashioned thriller with psychological elements which you rarely come across today. It is not filled with monsters, ghosts and gore, but the movie is tastefully using a few supernatural phenomenons to make the story suspenseful in an "unsilly" way. The director even managed to add a tiny bit of humor in the scene with Billy Wirth. Would have loved to see more of this and of this great actor from the legendary Lost Boys movie!
