Funniest Episode Yet
aarseg1221 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is what happens when Eric Kripke runs out of ideas. I hope he runs out of more. This is by far the funniest episode of Supernatural yet, including Dean playing fetch, Sam rubbing a dog's belly for information, and more. By far, the best scene in the episode was when the guy is eating the cat, and the clerk walks in and says "I thought you were with the perfume company!" In horror. Another was the absurd language used by absolutely every animal in the show. And the ending, well, I'll let you see it for yourself. The only thing bad about this episode was the lack of connection to the rest of the plot. The villain was pretty sweet, "very Breaking Bad" as Dean said. There was one good suspenseful scene that could've been a great jump scare, but the show seems to have taken those out. Overall, this was an amazing episode of the amazing show Supernatural.

One of the most funny episodes EVER!

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER!!!

Dog Dean Afternoon is an episode that die hard Supernatural fans return to again and again for a good laugh. Poor Dean, having only a dog as a witness to a strange murder, finds out through lore that there is a spell that could make him able to communicate with dogs. It turns it he also takes on some doggy "traits." It's hilarious and suspenseful as only Supernatural can do.

You won't regret watching this episode, as I read in another review.

You'll laugh your head off at Dean's dog traits, that he doesn't really realize he is doing, and Sam, as usual, tolerating his nutty brother.

A high point of the season
CubsandCulture14 September 2020
This is another really fun and funny episode in the show's run that takes a premise to its logical conclusion. Dean mind melding with dogs creates just the right amount of visual and slapstick gags to be really fun without being too silly. The monster of the week was a nice variant on a witch-has a little bit of pathos- and his death stands out as unique. In the early going of season 9 it is easily the best episode and the most fun Ackles has had in a couple of years.

"I always knew I'd find true evil in a vegan Bakery"

Warning: Spoilers
Sam and Dean investigate a case where a taxidermist is literally constricted to death by a mysterious man. The only witness to the crime is a German Sheperd, who after being sent to a dog kennel, witnesses a second murder. Sam suggests a spell to help communicate with canines, mentioning it may backfire, Dean jumps at the opportunity and starts to talk with the dog. However the spell has a slight side effect and Dean starts to show dog-like traits. After some interrogations they find a local chef who, in order to slowly heal his illness, consumes animal organs and uses Shaman magic to incorporate their abilities.

I really enjoyed this episode, it had a really mysterious feel to the killer, you never really saw him fully when he murdered someone so you kept guessing at what he was during the early scenes. I was a little sceptical at first when I heard this episode involved Dean talking to dogs, however it was done in a really fun way. The dialogue was funny, interrogating other dogs and when Dean starting acting like a dog. I liked the whole idea of the guy using magic and consuming different animal organs to inherit their traits, he was creepy and refreshing for the Supernatural universe. Ezekiel had to help Sam again, for a brief moment and I think Sam is starting to get suspicious. I really hope they develop something interesting with this connection and not just resolve it too easily like some of the problems in earlier seasons. Im still waiting for something good to happen with Dean's character, even though he was the main focus for this episode, this season still feels like its all Sam orientated but we are still early in this season yet. Overall i think this episode felt like a good classic. It had a cool, interesting "monster", a very different twist for Supernatural but at the same time, was light hearted and had a few funny moments. I hope we get more like this.

A nice change of pace
gsbuie6 August 2020
I love this episode because it is hilarious! After such a long stretch of death and destruction Dog Dean Afternoon is a nice change of pace. It's especially great to see Ackles play comedy as he does it so well. Jarrod turns in a solid performance as usual and plays off Ackles so well. The story itself certainly has taken a few things from Hannibal and twisted then around. It's ok. But I have it a 10 because it's funny, not as funny as some, but funny.

Hilarious episode

Warning: Spoilers
I'm rewatching from Season 1. Between this episode and Yellow Fever, I'm not sure I've laughed so hard. Dean is so hilarious being able to talk to animals. The scenes with Colonel, the yorkie and the pigeon are priceless. And releasing the animals from their cages towards the end is just what any animal lover would want to do. Can't get enough of Supernatural.

Dean is a dog!
grue-2814618 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't you want to watch Dean bark at a mailman? Play fetch? Make heart-eyes at a female dog? Come on, you know you wanna.

My only criticism of this episode is that Dean never howls/sings along to the radio. I feel like I have been robbed of true hilarity.

One silly episode!
mm-3910 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Dog Dean Afternoon is one silly episode. Supernatural is running out of ideas, and the writers are taking advantage of the dilemma. The writers are taking season nine seriously and are taking chances and making silly/humorous episodes. Dog Dean Afternoon is the most silly episode so far in the series. Dog Dean Afternoon is a mix of the movie Dr Dolittle meets Supernatural. In order to track down a creature Dean must take a potion that makes Dean speak to and act like a dog. Dean can also talk to other animals. There is fun made at vegans, dogs and Dean. The scenes where Sam has to rub a dog's belly for information, pigeon who poops on Dean's car, and Dean enjoying a car ride were hilarious. A cool ending with a conflict with the animalman, but the humorous plot devices were the story's climax. Seven barks out of ten.

This episode does very little for the main story line, but it is amusing. Many cheap laughs, and I do not see it up there with the best episodes, but saved by Jensen Ackles' acting.

What a funny, fun, different episode! Love it.
dreamingskychild27 October 2021
I'm watching Supernatural through for the first time, and so far I am adding this to one of my favourite episodes so far of the show. It's something different, it's really funny and cute. I love it when they involve a dog in an episode, and seeing what unfolds for Dean's character, that acting... priceless :)

Hilarious!
moviehawg5911 September 2023
This has to be one of THE best Supernatural episodes ever written! A rollicking good time, and not "overly" bloody! If you are anything like me, you usually watch Supernatural to see all different kinds of monsters, and the ways the brothers tend to get out of their jams.

While I am not particularly fond of the "many episode" story-arcs, the occasional EXCELLENT "stand-alone" episodes really make my day! This episode is a perfect example.

I am not going to put ANY spoilers in this review but, I WILL say that Jensen Ackles shines in this episode (of course, that ain't saying much because Ackles almost NEVER disappoints)! Pop the popcorn and crack open the Pepsi Cola. Enjoy!

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode, it's funny and all that jazz.

It's that crew-run-out-of-ideas-and-pulled-papers-form-a-hat-and-then-adapted-the-pulled-material-into-an-episode, and honestly, i dig that. Especially considering that last couple ogf episodes were mostly serious and before this one we didn't get a gooffest in this season

(spoilers ig) only thing that bothers me is that at the end of episode when Colonell is about to tell dead what dogs were put on the earth for, the spell wears off, and this probably won't ever be brought up again, and i know that that is supposed to be the butt of the joke or something but doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Steve Valentine makes an appearance!
danamae5147928 August 2023
Always fun to see Steve Valentine in any role. He is so talented and such a joy to watch. I prefer his comedic roles or when he's performing magic but still, he's awesome because he can do it all.

I already favor episodes that are heavy on the Dean Winchester storyline because Jensen Ackles is a terrific actor so to have this one be mostly about Dean with Steve Valentine as the guest star was a real treat.

Something interesting about this episode I'd like to share with everyone, and I know it sounds like a conspiracy theory, but the real reason Steve Valentine decided to take the role was to....

Not a huge fan
danajs248 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This one was an interesting episode. I really liked that they explored another magic route with the shaman in this one, but I despised the Dean talking to dogs and animals. Dean was funny, the animals were the exact opposite and then some. I know it's gimmicky, but the animals needed to actually look like they were talking. Also, why was this shaman caught raiding a taxidermist place after he had all these rare animals in his fridge? Seems like he was going the wrong direction with the whole thing. More questions from Sam's POV about the Ezekiel stuff, and it's getting a little silly how he hasn't come up with any theories on why this is.

No one needs to watch a cat being eaten
fh_328 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The writers took it too far showing the baddy eating a live car. I know they needed to show a change in the baddy's powers so he could kill again and develop the character. But showing thee consumption of a live animal especially a house pet takes it over the top. It is also lazy writing. They could have executed the scene without that part.

Otherwise the show was one of the funny filler episodes but not as creatively interesting as episodes where they played themselves or investigated a haunting on a sound stage. So many funny filler episodes up to this show and this was odd. Jensen was absolutely great!

Yet another piece of media that gives snakes a bad name.
TabalugaDragon22 September 2021
I'm speechless. When is this hate towards these innocent animals going to end? Whenever it's something fictional and involves snakes they are ALWAYS bad guys\monsters.

Many don't even consider snakes animals, like here- the taxidermist didn't even have any snakes among stuffed animals, nor snakes are communicated with in the episode as witnesses like other animals are. Because snakes are never victims right? Because they are never killed by hunters and regular people. Nope, they are the aggressors who attack with no provocation whatsoever, hence they are always shown as monsters, at least this is what Hollywood is trying to tell you.

Whereas in real life snakes try to stay as far away from humans as possible, and only defend themselves when they feel cornered and pretty much never act aggressively, as all they are trying to do is to survive. While here, the only snake character is killing people and adorable kitties. What a monster right? With Hollywood pumping this much effort into making people hate snakes it's no wonder that even those who never encountered a snake in his life and knows nothing about them despises them.

Like it wasn't enough bad stuff about snakes in this show(like "cut the head of a snake when they were talking about killing a demon leader), they keep adding more and more of this stuff. Would be a decent episode if it wasn't another snake hate creation.
