There’s always something a little magical about capturing child spontaneity in a narrative context. Northern California emigre Cory McAbee (of cult favorite The American Astronaut) made his daughter an integral part of 2009’s hilarious sci-fi musical Stingray Sam, then starred by then seven-year-old Willa and two-year-old John in last year’s freewheeling short feature Crazy & Thief. Their unchaperoned adventures on the streets of NYC are echoed by native New Yorker Alexandre Rockwell’s Little Feet, in which his own son and daughter wander L.A.’s Echo Park over an hour’s whimsical course.>> - Dennis Harvey...

When “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage isn't portraying Tyrion Lannister on the HBO hit, he prefers starring in low-budget indie flicks because they're often “infinitely better” than the big-budget spectacles Hollywood is best known for producing. The actor participated in his first-ever Reddit Ama on Friday in support of a Kickstarter campaign for independent filmmaker Alexandre Rockwell's “Little Feet,” a film about childhood that Steve Buscemi, Jennifer Beals, Sam Rockwell, Rosie Perez and Aidan Quinn are also lending a hand in raising money for. “I am positive that if my mentor John Cassevetes were around today he would use Kickstarter to make his films.” Whether Alexandre Rockwell‘s statement about Cassavetes is true or not (we’ll never know), it hardly seems implausible as we see yet another indie film legend going the crowdfunding route. It’s been a long time since Rockwell was a significant name in cinema, but he’ll always be remembered as an important member of the Sundance class of ’92, his quirky black and white feature In the Soup winning the grand jury prize that year over strong contenders like Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs and Allison Anders’s Gas, Food Lodging. He then came up with the idea for the anthology feature Four Rooms, on which he collaborated with Tarantino, Anders and Robert Rodriguez. More recently, he directed the Peter Dinklage comedy Pete Smalls Is Dead. His latest project, which...

Usually when filmmakers turn to crowdfunding, they're looking for backing to make a film, but in the case of veteran indie director Alexandre Rockwell ("In The Soup"), he turned to Kickstarter after his latest film "Little Feet" premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Vimeo as part of its deal with the Tff. When it screened at The Museum of the Moving Image's "First Look" screening series, our chief film critic Eric Kohn reviewed the one hour black and white film, dubbing it "the first great movie of 2014." Indie distributor Factory 25 then stepped up to distribute the film theatrically (it's unclear when and if the film will be available on Vimeo). The catch is that the distribution deal is contingent on Rockwell being able to pay for music rights as well as other post-production expenses such as final sound mix, color correction, art work...

Vimeo offered every film premiering at the Toronto Film Festival $10,000 if they elected to go on-sale via Vimeo’s On Demand service before any other digital movie provider. That means you iTunes, Netflix, Amazon and others. How did that turn out? Thirteen of them bit, according to a release distributed by the company Monday. Vimeo will have the rights exclusively for 30 days, at which point the films could also appear on other services. The film would also have to remain on Vimeo On Demand for at least two years. The first of those movies, “Little Feet,” is already available for pre-sale.

Toronto -- Vimeo last September offered producers of 150 world premiere movies at the Toronto Film Festival a $10,000 advance to digitally launch their titles on its Vimeo on Demand platform. It turns out, the filmmakers behind 13 movies took the site up on its offer, and their titles will debut on the streaming site. The first film to launch via Vimeo on Demand is U.S. indie director's Alexandre Rockwell's Little Feet, starring Lana Rockwell and Nico Rockwell, which is now available for pre-order on Vimeo and will debut on March 21. 1. YouTube Nation: YouTube and DreamWorks Animation are co-producing "YouTube Nation," an original program to air daily on YouTube, Variety reports. The show looks to be a daily highlight reel of what's trending on YouTube and could launch as early as the end of January. 2. "Little Feet:" Eric Kohn reviewed Alexandre Rockwell's film "Little Feet," calling it "the first great movie of 2014." While the film is playing at The Museum of the Moving Image’s “First Look” series, which runs from January 10 - 19, it will otherwise be available on Vimeo beginning in March. As Kohn writes, since Vimeo offered a special revenue-sharing deal involving a $10,000 advance for filmmakers who distribute their work on the platform, we have yet to see an effective case study of the approach working wonders. This could be the example we've been waiting for, as Kohn says the film "might not generate millions of dollars, but in the context of online-only.

Barely an hour long and blatantly made on the cheap, Alexandre Rockwell's "Little Feet" conveys greater emotion and poignancy than most movies released last year; it's also a terrific start to this one. Opening the Museum of the Moving Image’s "First Look" screening series today ahead of its exclusive release on Vimeo in March (you can pre-order it online starting tomorrow), Rockwell's tender black-and-white portrait of a young sibling pair (played the filmmaker’s kids) evading their bleak home life with a freewheeling outdoor adventure plays like Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson teamed up to adapt "Peanuts" into a live action feature. It's a soulful look at the innocence of childhood as a safety net from life's harsher truths. Rockwell's project, which features his adolescent daughter Lana and preschool-aged son Nico, bears a marked similarity to like-minded Diy filmmaker-musician Cory McAbee’s 2012 feature "Crazy and Thief," a magical realist street-based musical adventure also.

Indiewire has an exclusive first look at...First Look, the Museum of the Moving Image's annual showcase for inventive new international cinema that runs on weekends from Jan. 10-19. This year's program is comprised of 16 films from 10 countries. Opening the third edition is the U.S. premiere of Alexandre Rockwell's "Little Feet," a tale of two young siblings on their own, starring the filmmaker's own children. The U.S. premiere of Antonin Peretjatko's "The Rendez Vous of Deja Vu (La Fille du 14 Juillet)" -- recently listed by Indiewire's critic as one of the top undistributed films of 2013 -- will close the event. Chief Curator David Schwartz, who programmed First Look with Assistant Curator of Film Aliza Ma, said: "Between the delightfully free-spirited opening and closing night films, 'Little Feet' and 'The Rendez-Vous of Déjà Vu,' is an eclectic selection of films that offer fascinating...
