Recovering the complete skull of a Jurassic period ocean predator.
TxMike19 February 2024
Along the coast of England are cliffs gradually eroding and dropping debris to the shore below. Among the debris are a variety of fossils of ancient, formerly living things. One explorer discovers what appears to be the front quarter or third of skull of a large predator. Dating reveals it is from the Jurassic period.

The program is attended by Sir David Attenborough but he mostly observes and asks questions, the experts are there for the job. They figure that the remaining skull is embedded somewhere above, still in the cliff. So, how to find it and recover it?

It turns out to be a very difficult job, and they have a window of opportunity when weather allows working there. The recovery is quite complicated and requires the building of special equipment to do so. It is the head of a very large ocean predator, in the sea analogous to the T-Rex on land.

The program also includes visits to the labs and discussions with experts in the field regarding how its brain and senses were constructed, and how powerful its bite might be.

Good program for anyone interested in the subject, I watched it on PBS broadcast over the TV waves.
