With the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ Dceu officially ended, and now Dcu is taking over. Even though Gunn’s reboot is supposed to be a soft reboot, it looks like the stories of DC characters under his leadership are going in a new direction. Since Gunn often likes to provide fans with updates via Social Media, he is always eager to answer questions regarding the development of his upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy’ the movie that is supposed to kick off the live-action portion of the Dcu.
Recently, Gunn used Threads to clear up some details regarding the production of the movie. He cleared up that the development so far is going “swimmingly” as sets are being built, costumes are finished, and actors are adjusting to their roles. One fan took the opportunity to ask Gunn how much the cast he has locked in for ‘Legacy,’ and Gunn was...

There has always been a tenuous relationship between live theatre and streaming. Some old-school voices in the theatre believe that allowing people to watch stage shows from the comfort of their own homes would disincentivize them from showing up to see shows in person. More progressive voices in the community argue that by giving audiences opportunities to stay excited about theatre in between trips to see shows only makes them more and more excited to see the real thing live and in person.
One company that is looking to bridge that gap is BroadwayHD, which launched in 2015 and has been a platform for filmed theatrical productions and stage-to-screen adaptations ever since. On Thursday, the company announced that it had reached a deal with NBCUniversal to stream a collection of NBC’s live musicals, including “Hairspray Live!”, “The Sound of Music Live!”, and “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” These titles...

Melania Trump made a rare public appearance Monday on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” — at least, a version of her did.
Laura Benanti returned to the late night show to reprise her role as the former First Lady, and when asked about her feelings towards Stormy Daniels, the adult film actress at the center of Donald Trump’s indictment by the Manhattan Da, Benanti’s Melania extended grace and empathy.
“Honestly, I feel bad for that woman, Strumy Daniel,” she said. “I know what she has been through — worst 90 seconds of your life.”
Trump’s indictment hinges on a sum of hush money the former president paid Daniels in the final weeks of his 2016 presidential campaign to cover up an alleged affair. Though Trump’s arraignment has dominated the news, the real Melania Trump has also gained a fair amount of attention due to her notable absence. She did...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Peacock has landed for development, The Show Must Go On, an hourlong murder mystery anthology, which would mark the first time Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera musical is used as part of a TV series. The high-profile project comes from the Zoey’s Extraordinary Playbook creator Austin Winsberg, former top TV executive and award-winning producer Robert Greenblatt, Egot Lloyd Webber, as well as Zoey’s producer The Tannenbaum Company, pilot director Richard Shepard and studio Lionsgate Television.
Written by Winsberg, The Show Must Go On is a darkly comedic murder mystery anthology series. Each season would take place in the days leading up to a big, live, televised event and would tackle a new murder with a refreshed cast.

Is a 70mm film rebirth ahead? The wide, high-resolution format — used to display classics like The Sound of Music, Ben-Hur and Lawrence of Arabia — is a movie-buff favorite, but its use has been limited since the start of the digital cinema era. That may be changing.
A 70mm presentation of Fox’s Murder on the Orient Express opened the Camerimage international cinematography festival on Saturday, and the film also unspooled in the format last weekend on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. The grosses for the film were solid but not spectacular, according to exhibition insiders (the sampling was too small...

ABC announced Tuesday that it was tossing its hat in the ring of live TV musical events with “The Wonderful World Of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!” Other details are sparse, but the enhanced broadcast of the 1989 Disney animated classic has been slotted for an October 3rd airdate.
While it’s a bit surprising that it’s taken this long for the network to take a Disney property (especially one that’s already had a Broadway run) and bring it to TV, it won’t be a full-fledged musical along the lines of the “Grease Live” or “The Sound of Music Live” productions that have popped up on other channels.
There’s also no word on casting for this ABC version of “Little Mermaid” yet. But, given the live-singalong format that they’re looking to adopt, they might veer close to the talent at the front of last year’s Hollywood Bowl production,...

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk had its world debut on October 14 at the New York Film Festival and the early reviews are, to put it simply, a little all over the place. While Ang Lee’s latest work is, as intended, a visual spectacle — to its own detriment, some critics note — it seems as though the story isn’t being mentioned all that often and, when it is, there’s not much praise to dole out.
Jean-Christophe Castelli wrote the screenplay, which is based on the 2012 novel of the same name by author Ben Fountain, for the movie about a young soldier named Billy Lynn who returns home from Iraq in 2004. Both works, which are anti-war yet pro-military, focus on the 19-year-old as well as the surviving squad members with flashbacks to the battlefield action coupled...

Even non-music fans can appreciate the talent and personality on display at most concerts. That’s especially true with an artist like Adele, whose live performances are where she truly shines brightest. It’s an experience that audiences beyond just a stadium full of ticket holders ought to be able to enjoy.
Re-creating that live concert experience was the challenge facing the producers and director of “Adele: Live In New York City.” The one-off special, which was filmed at Radio City Music Hall on Nov. 17 and broadcast by NBC on Dec. 14, ultimately received four Emmy nominations. Discussing the representation of women in Hollywood is never, you know, a fun topic, especially when it comes to below-the-line departments. In 2016, there are still glaring examples of a lack of progress for women.
While an improvement over years past, here’s just a quick sampling of accomplishments women were not recognized for: narration, music composition, writing in many categories, stunt coordination… There are plenty of categories, as well, where only one or two women were nominated, often with a male partner — such as Writing for a Comedy, where the sole female nominee is Sharon Horgan alongside Rob Delaney for “Catastrophe.”
But rather than dwell on that, let’s acknowledge some of the accomplished nominees who have a chance to be recognized for their achievements this year. Because regardless of gender, they’re awesome.

There’s nothing more fun than getting to watch classic movies the way they were intended–on the big screen!

The studios often save the dog days of August for their weakest performers and sure enough, this weekend proved the rule. (In the past, “The Butler” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Straight Outta Compton” did strong business in August.) Yes, “Suicide Squad” grossed over $20 million, as it became the first non-animated film to have a three-peat at number one since “Dead Pool.” But three weak new releases— “Ben-Hur” (Paramount), “War Dogs” (Warner Bros.) and “Kubo and the Two Strings” (Focus) —opened to less than $15-million.
Making it even more challenging for this trio of weak domestic performers to make their money back: None are scheduled to open in China, which is increasingly the second and sometimes biggest single territory for theatrical grosses. That’s a big deal in a studio world increasingly shifting its focus on a sure thing.

NBC’s “The Wiz,” though, was designed more like a Broadway show with an eye on Broadway sometime in the future. “The Wiz” “lent itself more to theatrical environments because of its familiarity, because it’s fantasy, and because of its musical performances,” said production designer Derek McLane (“The Sound of Music Live!” and NBC’s “Peter Pan Live!”).
McLane collaborated with”Hamilton” Tony-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell on an organic world with different looks made for the culture of today.
“Kansas is not a happy place for Dorothy and that’s reflected in its neutral palette,” McLane continued. “Munchkinland is predominantly orange with cylindrical buildings that evoke the Munchkins. Emerald City is like a modern club with different shades of green and electrified.

A version of this story on live TV musicals first appeared in the print edition of TheWrap Magazine’s Miniseries/Movies Emmy Issue. Since NBC’s 2013 “The Sound of Music Live!” with Carrie Underwood, over 62 million people have watched live Broadway musicals reimagined for TV, notably “The Wiz Live!” last December and “Grease Live!” in January. And the daredevils who are bringing the genre back — or rather, inventing a whole new genre that marries theater and TV — feel like pioneers at a barn raising, helping and cheering each other on. Take Thomas Kail, who went from staging Lin-Manuel Miranda‘s titanic Tony.

Who is Laura Benanti? Who isn’t she? might be the better question: Segueing from Nashville‘s rising C&W starlet-turned-victim Sadie Stone to Supergirl’s doomed-but-wise mom Alura Zor-El, not to mention playing Captain Georg von Trapp’s ill-fated fiancée Ilsa on The Sound Of Music Live, garnering most of that show’s best reviews (even if Carrie Underwood’s Maria got the Captain) would cover only the last couple of TV seasons for someone who considers herself first and…...

It was inevitable... a movie on the much publicized Flint water crisis is in the works at Lifetime, from producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (the same pair behind the live TV musicals "The Wiz" and "The Sound of Music"), the network announced today. The producers, who optioned the rights to Time magazine's February cover story by Josh Sanburn, titled "The Poisoning of an American City" (above) say that their intent is to create something comprehensive, tackling the crisis from the political and bureaucratic angles, as well as focusing on how the residents of Flint were impacted by the poisoning. The trend of live TV events continues. The Wrap has announced that Aaron Sorkin's stage play A Few Good Men will be getting a live version on NBC in 2017.
This comes on the heels of Grease, The Wiz, Peter Pan, and The Sound of Music getting their own live TV adaptations, but this will be the first non-musical production of the past few years to get that treatment. A Few Good Men received a film adaptation in 1992 and earned a Best Picture nomination. I wonder if millennial audiences have ever seen this movie or know anything about it other than the iconic line "You can't handle the truth!" If the breathlessly-paced film is any indication, this might play well to those who are currently addicted to dramas that play out in courtrooms like The Jinx and Making a Murderer.

Ariana Grande is shiny haired and beautiful and also fully believes in ghosts and one time licked a donut in a display case, and honestly, I’m kind of a fan of her whole weird vibe. Additionally, I enjoy how she has a tiny speaking voice and a huge singing voice, like Sister Mary Robert from Sister Act. And although tonight’s sketches were a little hit or miss, Ariana handled her hosting/musical guest double duty fairly well. Let’s dig in! Cold Open: CNN reporter Jake Tapper cuts between coverage of Donald Trump’s rally with Ben Carson and an interview with Bernie Sanders. Listen, I was going to miss Jay Pharaoh’s Dr. Ben Carson impersonation as much as the next SNL reviewer, but I would have rather never seen him again than watch another former Republican candidate throw his support behind this orange monster who won’t go away.

The best picture doesn’t always win Best Picture. Sometimes the best film of the year gets robbed. Cinelinx looks at the movies which should have won Best Picture but didn’t.
Whenever the Best Picture winner is announced at the Oscars, sometimes we say, “Yeah, that deserved to win,” but then again, sometimes we say, “Huh? Are they kidding me?!” There are a lot of backstage politics and extenuating factors in Hollywood that can determine which film wins the big trophy. The worthiest film doesn’t always take the statue home. Going back over the 88-year history of the Academy Awards, we look at which films didn’t really deserve to win and the ones which rightfully should have won.

Bust out those aerosol cans — NBC has chosen "Hairspray" to be its next live musical.
The network announced the news at the Television Critics Association press tour. "Hairspray" follows in the wake of previous live musical events "The Wiz," "Peter Pan," and "The Sound of Music."
Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the show, which will air December 2016. NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt told reporters that the musical's focus on race relations and diversity was a major factor in its selection.
"Hairspray" is set in 1962 Baltimore, where a plump teenager named Tracy Turnblad tries out to be a dancer on a local TV show and protests racial segregation.
Zadan and Meron considered other musicals, including "Music Man" and "A Few Good Men," but the former depended too much on perfect casting, while the latter faced rights issues.

For NBC, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, the third time was the charm. The Wiz, Zadan and Meron's third live staged musical for NBC, changed the narrative for the network and — at least for now — ended the practice of "hate watching." The production, starring newcomer Shanice Williams, was a hit with critics and spiked from 2014's Peter Pan — though falling short ratings-wise of The Sound of Music Live. Here, Zadan and Meron open up to The Hollywood Reporter about why The Wiz worked, how producing the past three Oscar telecasts helped change the production

Thanks to Tony-winner Kenny Leon and a delightfully entertaining cast of characters, 'Home' is most certainly where the heart is this holiday season. Coming into this year's NBC live musical, theatre lovers nationwide were appropriately apprehensive, given the spotty results from The Sound Of Music and Peter Pan. However, in The Wiz Live, we were finally given a production worthy of the show's beloved Broadway legacy. Executive Producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan still haven't solved the riddle of recreating a stage show's scope and grandeur on screen without an audience, but with a once-in-a-lifetime star, and one of the most acclaimed casts in recent memory, for the first time since this annual experiment began in 2013, there's truly a reason to rejoice...

Coming off the heels of “The Sound of Music Live!” and “Peter Pan Live!” this fall’s “The Wiz Live!” always felt destined to be a third strike for NBC rather than the proverbial third time’s a charm. Blame it on cheesy, over-the-top performances from the first two live shows, or on the never-ending casting chase that left us with leads like Carrie Underwood as Maria or Christopher Walken as Captain Hook. Or perhaps fingers could be pointed at Fox, which commissioned its own live event in “Grease: Live,” which airs in late January. Sure, “The Wiz” is a Tony award-winning musical.

The Wiz Live! took fans back to Oz and took over Twitter Thursday night.
NBC's live musical featured newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy, and despite rave reviews for performance, there was one key component missing from most of the production: Toto! The canine favorite, played by a pair of adorable rescue dogs, appeared in the opening segment (as well as the end), but did not follow Dorothy to Oz – causing plenty of Twitter users to express their concern for the pooch. It's worth noting that in the original Broadway version of The Wiz, Toto did not make the journey to Oz either.
