Mostly satisfying conclusion

Warning: Spoilers
Well, we finally made it to the end of the three episode premier. It was a solid episode. Once again Bathena are at the forefront and their relationship was reinforced through their trials. They really were the MVPs and were so adorable at the end with their burgers and libidos. Haha, may they never change.

I was a little disappointed by the "resolution" of the conflict between Hen and Chimney (and Buck and Eddie by association). The agreement that neither were wrong was amusing but there definitely seemed to be leftover animosity there. Once again, I hope they'll address it in a future episode.

Buck and Eddie didn't do much but their banter was cute and I love how they're always together this season.

Not a fan of the Tommy character or how they shoved him back in the show. It was a little weird. And just like it felt like they were trying to make Lucy Donato another Buck, Tommy felt like an attempt at half Buck, half Eddie. Kind of dopey a la Buck (the static attempt) and also dark and sassy a la Eddie (we're gonna die anyway). Anyway, the vibe between him and Buck was noted and I think all of the speculation about Buck's sexuality was correct and will be made clear in the next episode. I'm just really not interested in Tommy being around very long. Hopefully he's just a quick wake up call for Buck. I'm just truly very tired of all of these not great love interests being explored when you have Buddie right in front of you...such a potentially beautiful story if only they had the strength to go there.

Firefam moments at the end were sweet otherwise. I really, really wish the 118 was more involved in the big emergency. That was the biggest disappointment for me.

I'm looking forward to moving on to "normal" episodes now!

The 118 is truly the most dedicated and reckless team I've ever seen
elysiumnotes12 April 2024
Back at it again with the word of the week: STRESS.

I absolutely loved this episode and the end to the cruise arc. I was on the edge of my seat hoping that these characters made it out alive and the fact the ABC did not pull any punches made it really worth watching.

We already know Bobby was a superhero, watching him trapeze his way to Norman while the boat capsized, then we get the death's of Wes and The mother caught in the door. The kid trapped within his room and Julien's subsequent death and last moment flare gun.

The writing was fantastic and the camera work was *chef's kiss*. I felt every moment that the boat moved and rocked and I felt the emotion and tension of the scenes.

Also love Captain Wilson following her gut and always being right. It was cute to see Tommy back and have a girls moment with Maddie. I will say I'm surprised that this team has yet to be fired after what they did, but as the new 118 motto says, "Who Cares!".

Bobby - Peter Krause - More - More - More!!!
JMadems31 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
These last two episodes have been amazing for Bobby's character! Peter Krause pulled out all the stops and appeared to have done most of his own stunts! Buck who? Just kidding - sort of.

This episode was the epitome of writing, stunt coordination and set assembly. The photography - again Joaquin Sedillo- the super talented DP shows a masters touch. Overhead, in the water, you name it. He and his team were everywhere. Much appreciated. His shots are the reason I always watch each episode twice. First for the story and actors and second for Mr Sedillo's art work!

So enjoyed the way the writers immersed us into the action and the director carried out their words. What a cast & crew! Sliding the 118 into Mexican territory was a bit much but with their familia love and concern I can live with the drama & stretch of logic.

Really enjoyed the Hen & Maddie scenes. More please.

Now just keep that drag & dread Marisol out of the picture and you will have 10s forever. Her teeny bopper mannerisms suck the oxygen right out of the room. With Chris being so mature the sharp contrast of her giddiness is just too painful to watch.

Those writers truly understand Hens 7 seasons of tenacity we have seen. They continued her brave determination. Not sure about Tommy but he's sure better than bringing back Lucy. And trying to buy that the FD could be training from scratch a helicopter pilot or fire dumper is more than anyone could buy. You need a little help in that area. No one should be that gullible to buy that misinformation. You're not doing the public any favors in that department. Just crushing some little kids dreams! Fix that please. Been in the biz too long to accept it. Research a bit and work it into the story. Shouldn't be hard. If you paid an aviation consultant for this bad info you need to get your money back!!

Was waiting for the Shelley Winters' swim on the ship but just read why it didn't happen. Time & budget but sad we didn't see that homage. Maybe next crisis? Just kidding.

Thanks again for a great start of the season. Keep it up please.

WOW what a ride!
CeeCeeLove2131 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I still feel like I need to catch my breath! I don't give out 10/10 often, but this disaster arc will go down in history with the tsunami and earthquake arcs as true cinematic masterpieces. I laughed, I cried, I cheered, it was a roller-coaster in the BEST way! The opening especially had me laughing and while we all knew what was coming with that set up, it still gave me goosebumps watching the kid seeing that wave.

Peter and Angela are absolute stars and it feels like the show was sleeping on them under Kristen's direction, but now they are back in the forefront and it feels so good! I absolutely adored getting to see Bobby do the dangerous rescue and rope work as he's usually hanging back and managing the scene. The little joke with Athena about Buck being there was cute and also a great clue to the new audience about the history there and what kind of character Buck is. The constant snark between and around Norman and Lola was funny and felt true to how a lot of people try to cope under stress. The doctor was so funny and then we got to see that great moment where he was able to break through his fear and really be helpful. I was so happy that the little boy AND his mom were okay and rescued. I was CRUSHED at losing Wes though, and even a little sad at losing Julian because he had many chances to leave everyone but he stayed and was helpful. These moments and this whole arc really, just really hammered home what this show does so well (though it's been less consistent the past couple seasons) which is allowing tragedy to have it's space, but also making room for hope. The most memorable arcs (plane crash, earthquake, bomber, tsunami) DO show the death and tragedy in these disasters, but also show extraordinary rescues and the way people pull together to help one another.

To balance out the more heavy storyline Bobby and Athena had going on, we got some truly great firefam as actual family moments. From sibling-like squabbles to ride-or-die rule breaking together to follow someone's hunch, the audience gets a clear picture of how close this team is and how well they know each other. As someone who remembers Tommy and how the firehouse was in Chim and Hen's "begins" episodes, I'm interested to see where the show is going with bringing his character back, and if we will get some acknowledgement that he's changed. And let's thank FOX for one thing which is taking the actress who played Lucy off our hands so she couldn't come in and muck up a perfectly good scene with her terrible overacting while all the characters have to pretend like the sun shines out of her behind. Lou did a great job having Tommy fit the vibe of the team with the right level of snark and silliness and dark humor. "Who cares!" will live rent free in my head for awhile. It was so good seeing the team banter feeling like it used to. Also, would it be a 9-1-1 episode if SOMEONE wasn't ignoring a hunch the 118 had and then taking the credit when it turns out they were right? It really pulls everyone together to have someone to hate a bit and we got that little bit of tension in this arc with Hen. I'm curious to see if we get anything more on that front!

This was a solid three episode arc overall! It was a great way to introduce a new audience to the heart pounding action this show is known for, along with showcasing the main stars people would know coming into the show blind. Next week looks like it will showcase the lighter side of the show which strikes a nice balance. Tim was always really good at pacing and balancing the big emergency episodes and the lighter and/or more character driven episodes. I'm truly excited to see what comes next. The only thing so far I have not been interested in seeing any more of is Marisol (and the homophobic/transphobic weirdly-always-grinning-like-a-creep actress) so hopefully that mess wraps up soon and we can focus more on the firefam in this short season. As good as this arc has been, Tim still has a lot of ground to recover with fans after the mess Kristen made of everything, especially Buck's character (as if that boy would ever cheat on anyone, or date and move in with someone who nearly ruined Bobby's life. Please). The real test is going to come with how the next couple of episodes flow and if the show still feel like the early seasons in these less disaster driven episodes. Seeing the previews, it looks likely, but only time will tell. For now, the show seems to be blessedly back on track!

The best story arc this show has done!
ItsKevvie16 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The season 7 opening cruise ship disaster trilogy is by far my favorite story arc this series has done. It features so many of my personal favorite tropes, and the plot takes so many drastic and exciting turns! Setting it on a cruise ship already makes me love it, but then the first twist is a murder mystery! Followed by a pirate attack, Titanic-style sinking, and then the ship goes full on Poseidon Adventure upside-down. I loved the way this story kept building, and that while the stakes got greater and greater, the scope became narrower, focusing on just a small cast of characters as opposed to the whole ship from earlier. Then when the 118, an LAFD crew, charters a helicopter out into the ocean along the Mexican border DURING A HURRICANE to look for this cruise ship, it's so laughingly unbelievable, but it's so camp and delightfully ridiculous that I had no problem suspending my disbelief! I also love that they brought back Lola and Norman, a couple from a 911 call back in season 2! And they went from being a one-off appearance to having major roles for a 3-episode arc! That must have been so exciting for the actors!! And what a script to come back for! Truly, I believe this is the best the show has ever been, and it leaves me optimistic for the rest of season 7!

Well.
JBest5760429 March 2024
I'm sure they stretched these three episodes out (and I mean really stretched) to justify the cost of production. Fair enough. But I wish they'd crafted an original story and not directly stolen from the Poseidon Adventure. That movie's been ripped off enough over the years. Let it rest in peace, already.

I have to agree that the characters are being written differently now. Can't quite put my finger on how they've been changed, but something's not the same. It happens when a show has to jump networks - different execs telling the production people what they can and can't do - and maybe some sort of equilibrium will be found. We'll have to wait and see now that the movie-length epic is over and we get back to weekly episodic stories.

Incidentally, I bet the network hated missing the commercial opportunity to make the ship a Disney cruise liner. Guess they couldn't stand the idea of sinking one of the Mouse's boats.

I did give it an honest try, but these just aren't the same characters
morkoff29 March 2024
I did give this new season a try. I wasn't expecting much because of the last couple of seasons and the network switch and it was still a letdown.

The show has never been shy of being cheesy or implausable but it still managed to write it with enough heart to be enjoyable most of the time and not flat out cringe. This season premiere writing is all over the place, most of the characters are unrecognisable and not in the good way. They haven't evolved or different as a natural result of human ability to change, they are like same names, same faces but completely different personality. Even the actors don't look invested in their characters anymore.

Also I am not exactly sure what changes were made but score for these three episodes was terrible, overly loud, overly melodramatic and weird. Same with camerawork, it gives a bit of the typical soap opera feel - "look, this is a dramatic scene", "here is time to laugh" - to it, which sadly just enhances the subpar writing. I'd rather rewatch first couple of seasons.

How corny can you get?????
cink-129 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I generally enjoy this show, but this whole story arc was just too much! Someone in the writers room must have recently watched Poseidon. This was just a dumb remake of a pretty good movie. EXCEPT it was totally unbelievable. And don't even get me started on Angela Bassett! Who could possibly wear white pants in a situation like this and have them looking pristine at the end??? I think the show needs to re-evaluate the writers room and make some changes. Otherwise just put the show actors and the audience out of our misery!

Make the stories more believable, don't try to remake movies...and pay attention to details!

Can it dumber?
boris_badanov30 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This is a satire show and never should be considered realistic.

The pure stupidity of Hen, who joined as a paramedic and not a firefighter being appointed Acting Captain is ridiculous beyond belief. That's like saying that the heart surgeon is unable to operate, but the O. R. tech has great skills, he's gonna fill in.

The ships doctor suddenly knows how to treat sn and emergency? Just after we yelled it, Athena comments.

Bobby, Mr firefighter had no idea what caused the explosion, but the useless ships captain explained how gas leaks cause fires.

Hen breaks into an office somewhere and forges a request to get a helicopter to fly to Mexico? No one seems phased and several firefighters were there first?

90 minutes flying through a hurricane, in a helicopter not designed for it, they manage to save the day.

Don't forget the fake radio breaking up gag.

The fire chief takes credit

No one is fired for violating so many rules, regulations and laws.

Insert eyes rolling, and head shaking.

( I'm a former EMS and Emergency room worker. )

It was good until this episode 😒
IwatchTV202410 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
When the three part cruise disaster was announced, I was very skeptical about it because if anyone watched Titanic, then it's basically the same premise and I wasn't in the mood to see it. I gave it a chance and watched the first episode but honestly, I wasn't too thrilled about it but the second episode was very good and I was excited for this one. Unfortunately, this episode was RUSHED and it felt very jumbled together.🙄

There wasn't any part of the 118's rescue shown and they spent too much time focusing on Norman and Lola's love life. Who cares that she cheated on him? I don't and also what in the actual unbelievable Gone with the Wind was happening at the end with Bobby and Athena? They don't act like that so it wasn't believable with her running down the stairs to an old song towards him.

All that time spent with Hen and Maddie was wasted and it could have been eliminated so there would have been time to show the actual rescue. But nope, none of it was shown. Corey's family should have been shown in episode one so the audience didn't have to sit through a mini Home Alone movie at the beginning. More wasted minutes.

This episode was sadly not good and the pacing for the rescue was off. Tommy shouldn't have been the one flying the helicopter but now that episode four has aired, everyone knows why he was there and it was so he could be put in the middle of Buck and Eddie. What in the high school Glee is going on here? This show is for adults and no one should have to watch two grown men be in the middle of a triangle.

Pure Camp
freeway-65 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What began with promise in the first of the three season opening episodes quickly dissolved into pure ridiculousness and with that slo-mo Athena run into the arms of Bobby at the end of episode three hilarious camp. One might argue that with the move to ABC the show has changed completely. Imagine the Los Angeles fire department commandeering a helicopter to the tip of Baja California. Not exactly possible. Then it manages to locate the overturned luxury cruise ship. After doing so it manages to land on the hull moments before the featured passengers appear. Prior to all of this, the thousand or so other passengers, who are not featured in the screenplay, managed to get into open air lifeboats that haven't been used on modern cruise ships since the days of the Titanic. But why go on? Two stars is being generous for this hour of camp.

Getting worse on abc
ttheusuall13 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The best thing in this three episodes cruise disaster? Bobby and Athena! Their feelings, their emotions, their love, their heroism. The cruise disaster itself? This season has only 10 episodes and 3 of them were only cruise, it's too much. Then, there was tension and build-up for three episodes and the rescue was one sentence on-screen "Hey Cap, need a lift?" I thought the bridge collapse rescue in season 6 finale was a little rushed, but compared to this it was done better. Here we didn't get to see the rescue at all. We didn't get to see how they pulled everyone out of that hole, how Athena told them that Bobby is still down there, how Buck and Eddie went looking for him. The whole rescue happened off-screen. And another sad thing is that they didn't bring back Lucy to help with the rescue. It would've made so much more sense since she couldn't help them with the bridge collapse but would've returned to help with the cruise. Sadly the actress wasn't available, but then the better option would've been to introduce a new pilot and not bring back a "redeemed"racist. Tommy was problematic in the past and is still absolutely unappealing in the present. Such characters should be left in the past not brought back and treated as if everything they did never happened. Tommy doesn't belong near these characters, he doesn't belong to be involved with these characters. It was a mistake to bring him back, it will be a mistake to keep him.
