1.31 John by Kenneth Lin: Punchy delivery which contrasts nicely with the ordinary or mundane
bob the moo8 November 2014
I work with a lot of Americans and one of the things I dislike about them and envy them for (in equal measure) is that generally they seem to be from a culture of relentless positivity and directness. I remember when the US played Germany in the Soccer World Cup in 2014, they genuinely believed they would win – not 'could' win, or might fluke it, but actually would win; and not that match, but the whole thing! Hollywood also shows us that tough talking and barked dialogue sound much more authoritative from an American accent.

These aspects of American culture I think are well captured here and the delivery from Weems is part of that. He is gruff in a military fashion, challenging but in a way that is to inspire rather than to combat; he is unmistakably American and when he speaks, you listen and you know it is serious business. This contrasts nicely with the mundane item which is the McGuffin at the centre of this scene; it doesn't really matter what the detail of it is, it is just pleasing to see such earnestness, such hope, such firm, gruff dialogue be spoken in this manner.

I have sat in meetings with such people and this scene rang true with my experience with some examples of this culture. Perhaps for others the film would not work so well, maybe just being comedic in the contrast, but for me it was more than this and I enjoyed it for how it hit the nail on the head so well.
