'If you could just for a day have a super power, what would it be?'
gradyharp17 August 2014
Now and then a controversial, deeply moving film based on what is happening in the world a present come along at a time that could not be more propitious. Inspired by true events, Aban + Khorshid is an intimate portrait of two imprisoned Iranian lovers, caught up in their government's restrictive regime, glimpsing into the world in which they met, moments before their execution for being gay. Though it is only fifteen minutes in length as written and directed by Darwin Serink, it is one of the USA entries for the LGBT Festival. Mojean Aria portrays Aban and Bobby Naderi portrays Khorshid. Sage Lewis provides this musical score - a mystical but touching atmospheric background for this tragedy. The surprising aspect is the quality of love that is portrayed here, love even in the most threatening of circumstances.

On his website Darwin Serink shares that this film was based on his response to a photograph of real life men Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni as they were being hanged for an alleged crime which in reality was the 'crime' of being gay. 'The incident--and the resulting photo from the Iranian Student News Agency of the two men's hanging sparked outrage, concern and, for Serink, inspiration: "It is one of those images that ingrained itself in my mind and never left," he said. "As a gay filmmaker I am using my talents to say something about the atrocities committed to gays in Iran."

There has been a powerful positive response to the film being hailed at festivals. In Farsi with English subtitles. Grady Harp, August 14

Got me in tears in no time
Gordon-115 June 2016
This short film tells the story of a gay couple in Iran, from how they meet, how they love, how they get captured, imprisoned and executed for being homosexual.

"Aban and Khorshid" is so profoundly touching, that it got me physically sick with nausea within just a few minutes. Then the tears and the chest tightness follows. It is short, but very focused and effective. It affects people, and that effect lingers on for a long time.

Do spend fifteen minutes to watch "Aban and Khorshid", and be touched. Be reminded how great it is to be able to be yourself. It is freely available on the internet.

Real life events cannot save this one

Warning: Spoilers
"Aban and Khorshid" is a 13-minute live action short film from 2 years ago. And despite being an American production, the language here is Persian, which is also already an indicator of what happens in the end. So get subtitles perhaps. The writer and director is Darwin Serink and this is probably his most known work to-date. I don't known any of the actors. I guess the fact that it is based on real life events is why this film got so much awards recognition as I cannot imagine that it is because of the film itself. The writing was forgettable, sometimes even pretty bad and the ending is cheesy beyond belief, which takes away a lot from the message this film is sending out to the world. I wish a more gifted filmmaker could have made this. I also believe the lack of chronology hurts this movie a lot. Overall, it is really just nothing more than another gay-themed short film from the gray mass. It is not among the very worst, but also far away from being good enough, so I would recommend it. Watch something else instead. I feel sorry for the two who got really executed. They deserve much better than this.

...or poem. for the last hypothesis, the most significant proof is the music, the atmosphere, the delicate manner to say a story about forbidden love. and the dialogue. for the first - the last scene - the picture inspiring the director. and the words about the persecutions against a minority escaping from the frame of political regimes. after its end, the special feeling like an ash snow. and the short perspective about contemporary world. about Aban and Khorshid. from far country, from restrictive states.
