Science-fiction has never taken particularly strong roots in French cinema despite being born in hands of a certain Monsieur Meliés on French soil. And Gallic helmer Phillipe Fernandez is not likely to alter the status quo with his sophomore feature Cosmodrama, set entirely inside a space ship hurling against the eternal canvas of black space. Fernandez bypasses the usual scifi genre route opting instead for the Kubrick-Tarkovsky approach though completely under his terms, no imitations included. The film opens on a white door opening with obligatory swoosh and whirl of smoke in an eager anticipation. A confused human (Bernard Blancan) totters out of the cryogenic chamber having been awaken from deep-sleep for yet unknown reason. As if by chance, the remaining crew members, "the astronauts", meet...

Patrick Wang’s The Grief of Others set for international premiere in the selection.
France’s Association for the Diffusion of Independent Cinema (Acid) has unveiled the line-up for its 22nd Cannes showcase, running May 14-23.
The initiative aimed at giving greater visibility to up and coming, indie filmmakers will screen nine works – five of them first features and six of them without a distributor.
They include Us filmmaker Patrick Wang’s The Grief of Others, which premiered at SXSW earlier this year.
An adaptation of Leah Hager Cohen’s novel about a family who come to terms with the recent loss of a baby through the arrival of a pregnant, teenager stepdaughter in their care, it is Wang’s second film after the much-praised In the Family.
Paris-based Ed Distribution has just acquired the film for France.
Launched in 1993, Acid’s Cannes showcase has put the spotlight on more than 200 works on the Croisette including early works...

“Meet And Greet” is Iffr’s new initiative to allow the public and industry visitors to encounter filmmakers in an informal setting.
The idea falls somewhere between a social event and a mini press conference.
Ludmila Cvikova, a programmer at International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr) for many years and a former head of international programming at the Doha Film Institute, is overseeing the afternoon sessions, which take place at the bar in the corner of the Doelen, close to the box office, at around 4pm every day.
“The idea is to give a special attention to filmmakers who are bringing films as premieres to Rotterdam,” Cvikova explains.
Each afternoon, Cvikova interviews up to four directors on stage. The interviews are scheduled to be after the press and industry screenings - but before the public screenings - of these directors’ films. For journalists and industry delegates, it is an opportunity to ask questions about films they have seen...
