In this pilot episode, we are introduced to the people working in a little library in a small town in Switzerland. The head librarian is retiring and practicing the speech he will give at the retirement party his wife is organizing. We see a little of their tense interaction and how they seem annoyed with each other. The plot then centers on a lively and upbeat librarian , Michèle, who is excited to become the library director now that her boss is retiring. She enthusiastically tells her two assistants about her plans to create a children's section, stay open on Saturdays, and hire more staff. Her assistants are negative towards her ideas and argue that hardly anyone reads books anymore and that it won't be possible to attract more library patrons. Then an auditor from the town council comes in, insisting that he see the library's expense records for the last seven years. He holds a meeting with the librarian who is about to retire, Michèlle, the book supplier, and other members of the board. He accuses Michèlle of embezzlement, which she denies.
