Ahead of Horror Channel’s premiere of The Cleaning Lady on June 26th, the film’s star, writer and producer Alexis Kendra talks about playing a ‘Goddess’, coping with lockdown and why she can’t watch horror films on her own.
The Cleaning Lady is having its channel premiere on Horror Channel. Excited?
I love you guys. Always have, always will. I’m honoured.
It’s a very disturbing film, dealing with abuse, addiction and hidden rage, yet the characters are sympathetic and have real depth. It’s horror with a twisted heart. As a co-writer, alongside your director Jon Knautz, what were the main challenges in getting the balance right between acting and writing?
I compartmentalize real easy, so if I’m writing, I’m writing. If I’m acting I’m acting. I don’t really mix anything so it’s not that difficult. Keeps me in the present moment a lot.

As if the lineup for Arrow Video FrightFest 2018 wasn't impressive enough, the festival has added two films to its slate: David Barker's Pimped (touted as an erotic thriller with a touch of Hitchcock and Brian De Palma appeal) and screenings of the restoration of John Carpenter's classic Halloween! The guest lineup includes Barbara Crampton, Leigh Whannell, Shaked Berenson (Tales of Halloween), Issa López (Tigers are not Afraid), composer Fabio Frizzi, and many more!
Press Release: Two extra films have been added to the record-breaking 2018 line-up: Pimped is director David Barker’s modern transgressive erotic thriller, an Hitchcocktail of elevated suspense and shock in the revered style of Brian De Palma, And If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s Halloween on the big screen, now’s your best chance. The inclusion of this 4K restoration needs no explanation in anticipation of a new Michael Myers slasher being released in October.

Tagline: "She Will Love You to Death." Goddess of Love is resurfacing after already releasing through Video-on-demand. This title was moved to Digital platforms, way back in 2016. The film has been reviewed, on 28Dla, here: Goddess of Love Reviewed on 28Dla. Very tense, the film is almost a character study of Venus (Alexis Kendra) as she descends into an internal hell. Mpi Home Video will show Jon Knautz's Goddess of Love, on DVD, this Summer. For more on the story, Venus falls in love with Brian (Woody Naismith), a little too quickly. When Brian returns to his ex-girlfriend (Elizabeth Sandy), Venus acts out on her former flame. Everyone loses in this deadly love triangle. This version of Goddess of Love has not been rated. The studio at the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center, where a group of reporters are gathered for a preview of the Broadway revival of Once on This Island, is filled with the vibrant voice of Mother of the Earth. Hitting powerful high notes with modern flamboyance and dramatic flair, the performer never misses a beat, just like Kecia Lewis in the 1990 Tony-nominated original production. Except this time around, Mother is played by a man -- and what many of us in the room knew about the musical has been completely, yet delightfully altered.
Based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, Once on This Island is the tale of Ti Moune (Hailey Kilgore), a fearless peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of their Caribbean island in the Antilles. (Spoiler alert: Please do not read on if you’re not caught up on “American Gods”) Bilquis returns to star in the “Coming to America” vignette at the top of the “American Gods” season finale on Sunday night. Set in 1979 Tehran, an exclusive clip obtained by TheWrap shows the Old Goddess of Love being run out of her home by men who want to take her power for themselves. “Our queen’s power — which is the power of all women, the power of rebirth and creation — it makes some men kneel in awe and give gifts,” Bilquis says in the clip’s narration.

Beauty is something that varies from person to person as well as from period to period, which is why Homer made a clever choice to provide the Goddess of Love with no physical description whatsoever while showing no such restraint for the other divine women who populated his epics. Yet, ranking beautiful celebrities remains as popular a pastime in the present as in the past, as shown by how publications such as People magazine release lists of the most beautiful female celebrities on a regular basis. Following American Gods character promos for Shadow Moon, Mr. Wednesday, Mad Sweeney and Laura, we now move on to an Old God who was, at one time, one of the most powerful deities in existence, but has greatly diminished by the time we catch up with her in the story: Queen Bilquis, the Goddess of Love, who will be played by Masters of Sex actress Yetide Badaki.
The promo is very brief, but it does give us a rather unsettling glimpse into the methods Bilquis employs in order to regain some of her old power. Though the ins and outs (no pun intended) of this bizarre ritual may be altered slightly for the TV adaptation, in Neil Gaiman’s source novel, the Goddess actually works as a prostitute in order to lure unwitting men into her bed. Terror Films will be releasing Jon Knautz's Goddess of Love, tomorrow (Oct. 7th, 2016). While there may be a serious lack of theatrical horror coming our way this Halloween season, fear not genre fans, as we have over 15 different horror and sci-fi titles making their way onto smaller screens this October, which should help take the sting off a bit. Several great films I happened to catch earlier on this year at various festivals – The Greasy Strangler, In A Valley of Violence and Under the Shadow – are all making their VOD debuts this month, and you also have the remastered version of Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm and the series final sequel, Phantasm: Ravager, to look forward to as well.
Other notable VOD releases for October 2016 include The Windmill, The Unspoken, ClownTown, Fear, Inc., Vampyres, Halloweed, and Goddess of Love from Jon Knautz (The Shrine, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).

Terror Films has acquired the erotic thriller Goddess of Love, for North American distribution. Raven Banner Entertainment will handle the release of the film in Canada, while Automatic Entertainment covers other territories. The film is a psychological thriller, with Venus at the core of the conflict. An early review of the film, on 28Dla, is available here: A Goddess of Love Review on 28Dla. And now, an official North American trailer is available here, along with new artwork. From viewing the film, this film fan would say that it is more of a psychological thriller, compared to the erotic. The film does begin as a more sensual film, until the character becomes unhinged by a break-up. It is hard not to think of an earlier film, Fatal Attraction (1987), when watching this one. Though, Goddess of Love is much darker in tone and scene. Much of the mayhem takes place at night.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Dalia Films Production. Tagline: "Be careful who you get close to." Director: Jon Knautz. Writers: Alexis Kendra and Jon Knautz. Cast: Alexis Kendra, Woody Naismith, Elizabeth Sandy and Monda Scott. Goddess of Love is a bit of misnomer. The film's protagonist, Venus (Alexis Kendra), is more of a black widow or a female preying mantis. She bites the heads off of those she loves, figuratively. This film, from Canadian director Jon Knautz (The Shrine), is a very fascinating look at a delusional character. She appears normal and average at first, but her mask comes off at a prominent transition point. Here, the film changes from an erotic thriller into more of a psychological one. The transition is jarring and from here on out the film is a bumpy ride. The steep ups and downs come from the protagonist, whose own perceptions cannot be trusted.

After making his debut with horror-comedy hybrid Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer director Jon Knautz heads into much darker territory with his third feature, the erotic thriller Goddess Of Love.Says Knautz about this tale of a dancer turning on her lover when she suspects he's having an affair, "I wanted to make a film that puts the audience inside the mind of the insane so you could experience the story from their point of view rather than watch it from the outside. Glenn Close may seem like the 'bad guy' in Fatal Attraction but what if you experienced the film from her perspective? In her eyes she's not doing anything wrong... and that's just interesting to me. Good or bad is just an opinion of the...
