There is no doubt in saying: the third season has been unimpressive. "Death of a Detective" and "Political Suicide" were good, but not great. "Ye of Little Faith", "The Man with the Golden Gun", "The Early Bird" enjoyable enough. "An Artistic Murder" was okay and "The Wrong Man" almost awful. It was nice to see: the third season ends on a high note with "Rue Morgue".
Let's start with good, shall we?
. The production values are wonderful as usual. The episode looks and sounds great. The acting's very good all around. I liked Joanna David and Phil Davis the most.
. The story is hugely compelling with red herrings, clever twists and turns, welcome humor and a solution (Look out for Judith, she is the killer!), which was very satisfying. The subplot about DI Goodman's wife felt relevant to the plot as well.
But....
. I would have liked if Michele Dotrice and Philip Jackson would have had a bigger role in this episode. They felt more like vessels to get the plot moving at times.
. Also, the humor about Goodman's clumsiness does not work all the time.
Overall, a very good episode.
