Charlotte Clarke : [voice quivering] Mom?
Victoria Grayson : Charlotte? What's wrong?
Charlotte Clarke : Some freak just sent me this.
[hands over letter]
Victoria Grayson : [sits down, reads] "You're so much like your namesake, it's almost haunting. And I know I said this before, but the day you became a Clarke was one of my proudest moments."
Charlotte Clarke : There's no signature. And what does that mean, "I said this before"?
Victoria Grayson : I haven't the foggiest. Someone who's trying to scare you?
Charlotte Clarke : I don't know, Mom. Amanda once showed me some journals David wrote. And the handwriting is similar. Is there any chance that David is still alive?
Victoria Grayson : Charlotte.
[gets up]
Victoria Grayson : History has proved that there are always people out there who enjoy haunting this family with the specter of David Clarke.
Charlotte Clarke : [anguished] But that letter seemed so sincere...
[shakes her head]
Victoria Grayson : Now don't let your imagination run wild. Especially when there are far lovelier things to think about.
[smiles, takes her daughter's hand]
Charlotte Clarke : [sees ring] You're engaged!
Victoria Grayson : Mm-hmm.
Charlotte Clarke : That was fast!
[both laugh]
Victoria Grayson : I hope one day your heart knows such certainty.
[hugs Charlotte]
Victoria Grayson : Oh, sweetie.
Charlotte Clarke : Congratulations.
Victoria Grayson : So you see why we shouldn't let anything rattle us?
Charlotte Clarke : Give me that. I'll get rid of it.
[paper rustles]
Victoria Grayson : No.
[takes it]
Victoria Grayson : I don't want you to spend another second with such an evil prank.
[leaves with letter]

Jack Porter : What brings you by?
Charlotte Clarke : [comes forward, opens handbag] You're gonna think I'm crazy.
[hands over letter]
Jack Porter : [opens, reads, frowns] Who wrote this?
Charlotte Clarke : I have a guess.
Jack Porter : [shakes his head] It can't be David.
Charlotte Clarke : Well, Amanda had some journals with his handwriting, so it can't hurt to check, right?
Jack Porter : Charlotte... your father is dead. This is obviously just some jerk messing with your head.
Charlotte Clarke : Yeah, my mother said the same thing. And then I found these in her vanity. Two more letters. Why would she hide them and then lie to my face about it?
Jack Porter : Who knows why she does anything?
Charlotte Clarke : Please, can I just see the journals?
Jack Porter : I don't know what Amanda showed you, but I don't have anything.
[shakes his head]
Charlotte Clarke : Then I guess I'll have to confront my Mom about it, because... I just have this feeling.
[turns, leaves]
Jack Porter : [sighs] Hang on.
[she turns back]
Jack Porter : I think I can help you.
-
Jack Porter : [inside mysterious cabin] Don't jump to any conclusions.
Charlotte Clarke : I'm trying not to, but it's hard.
Jack Porter : Charlotte... David Clarke died in front of a hundred inmates, and even if they were all wrong, why would he wait until now to reach out to his daughter?
Charlotte Clarke : Maybe he was afraid.
[picks up page]
Charlotte Clarke : This is the same stationery used in those letters.
Jack Porter : Yeah,
[shakes his head]
Jack Porter : but the rest is research. David knew all this information. He wouldn't need to do any of this.
Charlotte Clarke : So this really is just some sicko trying to mess with me.
Jack Porter : I'm sorry.
Charlotte Clarke : Let's go before he comes home.
[turns and heads for the door, but Jack has another objective]
