"I'm actually kind of happy. Finally I can be just like Kite was, in the end."
J_Butler9919 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's heartbreaking to see how far Gon has gone in his mission to avenge Kite. It's pretty on the nose during his transformation that the happy little kid we've been following throughout the show has turned into a monster.

The final 5 minutes of this episode are the definition of art. Pitou's limp body slowly rising as its transitions to black and white and the sequence following that is completely gorgeous animation.

Best episode in Hunter x Hunter
vladimirkapitonenko12 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This review is only for those that have seen the entirety of Hunter x Hunter (2011)

Togashi, you really are a sick person. How can you even create something as fantastic as this. You are lucky that Madhouse adapted it as well as they did.

What is so fascinating with this episode, is that it presents the aspect of "downfall" in a menacing and a tragic way. It shows our main protagonist Gon giving in to his grief and rage, and unleashed a monstrous ability to slaughter his opposition, Pitou. It starts with Gon hoping that Pitou can keep his promise to heal Kite, but instead declares that he will dispose of Gon, by the King's orders. Gon snaps, and sacrifices all of his energy, in order to get a revenge that he doesn't need to get. He ends up annihilating Pitou (lightly phrased), but ends up losing his Nen and nearly dying in the process.

What is so special with this episode, is that it ends Gon's character arc in the series, which is rather unusual in literature. Gon started an adventure in episode 1, and gathered friends, learned new things and experiencing many situations, both happy and sad. However, he plunged too deep into the Hunter world, in hope that he may have found something more, but it got the better off him, leading to his sacrifice. He ended up in deep grief and regret, unleashing a forbidden power out of desperation and rage, which took away everything he has gathered along his adventure. His friends are still alive, and he still accomplished his goal by the end, but it did not come cheap for Gon. He took his proffession too seriously and underestimated the Hunter world, and ended up sacrificing what he had learned after his adventure. His goal is completed, but learned a valuable lesson by the end. Hunter x hunter has basiclly discarded Gon as a protagonist. Togashi, you really are a sick person...

This episode told and taught us so much, and changed the series forever. After seeing the episode, I was so flabbergasted that I ended up brain-dead for many minutes after it. I was happy to see this episode ranked as high as it was in IMDb.

10/10 episode. Togashi is a genius.

Just Heartbreaking. Gon goes from this sweet happy go lucky kid, and then becomes a monster losing his humanity and everything just for revenge. Togashi is a genius writer and I'm forever thankful I got to see such a masterpiece.

An Insane Episode

Warning: Spoilers
Even by HxH standards, this episode is amazing. Gon's transformation into a monster reflects what was slowly happening to Meruem and some of the other Ants. This whole arc is near perfect but this still is my second favorite episode in the whole show.

One of my fav TV episodes of all time
jkrulee9 January 2021
I haven't seen too many tv shows but of all of the ones I have seen, including other anime, this episode is by far my favorite. Hunter x Hunter episode 131. What can I say? It's pretty much flawless to me. Everything from the climactic buildup to the music to the dialogue to the animation all blow me away every time I watch this episode. There is a specific scene between Gon, Killua, and Pitou near the end of the episode that gives me chills and leaves me in awe every time I watch it. I'm truly glad I was able to witness this masterpiece of an episode and amazing show in general.

What they did to pitou is a shame
ayuobsaleh28 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
We all know that pitou is going to die and she has to, but the way was done is very bad and ugly.

A great character like Bhutto deserves a much better ending.

The writer chose the worst possible scenario from multiple options to the end of pitou.

One of the strongest points in this anime that distinguishes it from others is the logic as much as possible in all events, But gon's transformation to the most powerful being because of anger is nonsense and too cliche.

How much I was waiting for this battle unfortunately was disappointed.

Who defeat Kaito in a jiffy and who received a blow from Nitro and didn't hit a scratch, It definitely deserves a better ending.

This episode is like a curse on everything that was built before.

A very shocking and sad episode
logancrooks25 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First off this is the only episode so far that got a TV MA-V in the series alone. In a way it kinda felt like saving private ryan in omaha beach when people were loosing their limbs and lives on D-day. Then when Gon loses his arm it just puts me into shock and tears. Cause pretty much his days of being a powerful hunter are over. Plus it is definitely the best episode of the series.

An Insane Episode
BadgerStorm434521 September 2020
Gon vs. Neferpitou is my favorite fight in all of anime. I can hardly even do it justice by a review. The music slowly creeping in on us until it explodes in intensity and shows us Gon Freeccs become a Monster is one of my favorite moments in this show. Gon murders Pitou and the fight never makes her seem underpowered. Pitou is second only to Meruem in terms of Chimera Ants and this episode shows just how strong she still is, but also how much stronger Gon is than her. The moment at the end where Killua and Gon make eye contact is another reason this episode is held to such a high standard.
