April’s an uncommonly strong auteurist month for the Criterion Channel, who will highlight a number of directors––many of whom aren’t often grouped together. Just after we screened House of Tolerance at the Roxy Cinema, Criterion are showing it and Nocturama for a two-film Bertrand Bonello retrospective, starting just four days before The Beast opens. Larger and rarer (but just as French) is the complete Jean Eustache series Janus toured last year. Meanwhile, five William Friedkin films and work from Makoto Shinkai, Lizzie Borden, and Rosine Mbakam are given a highlight.
One of my very favorite films, Comrades: Almost a Love Story plays in a series I’ve been trying to program for years: “Hong Kong in New York,” boasting the magnificent Full Moon in New York, Farewell China, and An Autumn’s Tale. Wim Wenders gets his “Adventures in Moviegoing”; After Hours, Personal Shopper, and Werckmeister Harmonies fill...

Due to his tremendous popularity, Elvis Presley changed lives across the globe. Elvis’ ’68 Comeback Special changed Suzi Quatro’s life in particular. She went on to pay tribute to him numerous times. The ’68 Comeback Special also influenced pop culture in a number of surprising ways.
Suzi Quatro’s look was inspired by Elvis Presley’s ’68 Comeback Special’
During a 2022 interview with Tidal, Quatro said she was a fan of Elvis since she saw him sing on The Ed Sullivan Show. That performance made her want to follow Elvis’ career path. She didn’t think being a girl would stop her from doing that.
“Then you fast-forward to the Comeback Special,” she said. “I was on the road since the age of 14. I was in the band for four years by that point because I started in ’64, and then in ’68, we switched on the TV, and he was in leather. So...

This is definitely the time of year when film critic types (I’m sure you know who I mean) spend an inordinate amount of time leading up to awards season—and it all leads up to awards season, don’t it?—compiling lists and trying to convince anyone who will listen that it was a shitty year at the movies for anyone who liked something other than what they saw and liked. And ‘tis the season, or at least ‘thas (?) been in the recent past, for that most beloved of academic parlor games, bemoaning the death of cinema, which, if the sackcloth-and-ashes-clad among us are to be believed, is an increasingly detached and irrelevant art form in the process of being smothered under the wet, steaming blanket of American blockbuster-it is. And it’s going all malnourished from the siphoning off of all the talent back to TV, which, as everyone knows,...

Let’s play a little game: Which True Detective character is going to bite it first?
Forgive me if that seems a bit morbid — even for a show that this week introduced us to a murder shack liberally painted with “arterial spray” (thanks, Ani) — but at least one of these people has to die before the rapidly approaching end of the season, right? (After all, not everyone can have Rust Cohle’s Carcosa-surviving unkillability — though the invisible bubble that protected Ray, Ani and Paul from all the bullets last episode certainly seems to come close.)
After this week’s hour,...

When last we heard from Danish director Natasha Arthy the occasion was her stellar 2007 martial arts coming of age story Fighter, a film that neatly balances out character drama with tightly choreographed martial arts and which was a selection of the Berlinale. Arthy's been busy since but her work has all been in television since Fighter - very high end television, too, as she did significant work on the original (and superior) version of The Killing - but she's moving back into features now with dark comedy Comeback.Comedian Thomas Vang has wrecked his career and will do anything to return to the top. Even if it is just warming up for his friend, the successful Mads Andersen, he goes all out to get his...
