A year ago, the Cannes Film Festival presented the world premiere of what was widely taken to be Jean-Luc Godard’s final film. He had died by assisted suicide eight months before, and the 20-minute-long “Trailer of the Film That Will Never Exist: ‘Phony Wars'” felt, by nature, like the aestheticized version of a last will and testament. It was a collage film, and it was (surprise!) oblique, yet it offered tea leaves to read about Godard’s state of mind as he prepared to leave the world.
As it turns out, “Trailer of the Film…” was not Godard’s final work. The 18-minute-long “Scénarios,” also made in a collage style, but simpler and more direct, was unveiled today at Cannes, along with a 34-minute documentary about the making of the short. “Scénarios” has the feel of a minor but purefied late-period work, like a Matisse paper cutout. The Coen brothers broke up four years ago, and it has taken them a while to come out with solo albums that define their identities. In 2021, Joel Coen directed “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was a dazzling black-and-white pastiche of a Shakespeare drama. It was well-done but felt like a one-off, a decision by Coen to serve the material. One year later, Ethan Coen came out with “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind,” a small-scale rock ‘n’ roll documentary that he made during the pandemic; it was a YouTube clip job, and on those terms expertly crafted — but even after Jerry Lee died (five months after the film’s Cannes premiere), it took ages for the film to be released.
Now, though, we finally have a Coen movie in which one of the brothers puts his solo stamp on filmmaking. “Drive-Away Dolls,” directed by Ethan Coen, is a crime-speckled road-trip...

Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden stars as Margaret Wright, Skylar Astin plays Todd Wright, and Tristen J. Winger is Lyle. Madeline Wise plays Allison, Inga Schlingmann is Susan, and Rosa Arredondo stars as Francey.

Many filmmakers and fans over the years have cited "Star Wars" creator George Lucas as an influence on them. The world he designed has changed not only the landscape of film but the shape of pop culture for decades. However, Lucas was, in turn, influenced by one of the medium's pioneers, particularly in "Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones."
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly for issue #654 in 2002, Lucas spoke about writing the script for "Attack of the Clones" in 1999 and how he was influenced by Soviet director, writer, editor, and film theorist Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948), specifically his "musically influenced processes." For Lucas, it was about tying things together with themes. He said, "I create themes, and I repeat those themes, in different chords and different arrangements, like little bits of chorus." To tie the visuals to familiar moments, he, according to the article, tried to "cite the original trilogy" with lines,...
