Great Potential But How Long Will It Last?
ShelbyTMItchell27 September 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Great show but how long will it last? Really there has been a lot of hate. And a lot of mixed reviews. But the premiere had up to 14M people watching. But the jury is still out.

Lots of potential but needs some fine retuning. Elyse Gabel a Brit, puts on the American accent as the main protagonist. As a child he got arrested for hacking into the NASA thing that got him into trouble.

He also owns a tech thing with geniuses that have IQ between him and the three others, 700 but has lack of people skills. But they are behind in debt and forgot to pay the electric bill. They do not know how to handle money huh?

But when Homeland Security agent Cabe Gallo played by Robert Patrick, gives them a new lease on life despite his and Walter O'Brien, the main character's name history in the past.

They must land up to sixty planes with help of technology or 20,000 people in CA will die. They commandeer the diner where Katherine McPhee's character works with a young son, who is a genius but her POV is that he is autistic. Go figure at a diner and not LAX!

Still it is only the beginning of the relationship and McPhee really is good in this show. Showing her acting skills. Gabel is a great actor with lots of potential as well as the rest of the supporting cast.

But how long will it last despite fine acting but needs retuning and needs better scripts.

You need to love the character to be involved, if you want to understand genius a little bit more,
rayzh23 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Since there are many negative review out there, let me do justice to this series and especially the pilot episode

What to Expect..

please don't expect this to be a documentary or even realistic take on any situation that Walter o'Brien could possibly face. This is a genius case solving crime show after all with some twists.

secondly, this show is really good at handling emotion related dialogue but terrible at handling logic case solving, and it suffers as the show is ultimately based on the crime solving and tension building part. Therefore, the show isn't intelligent or genius in anyway itself, but it's a good character study for some of the issues.

How does it start?

The first scene of the show is the break up scene between the troubled genius, Walter and his soon to be ex girlfriend, notice that although it's portrayed that his ex is a normal human being, she is wearing a lab coat suggesting a higher education degree and high level of intelligence. This is crucial as this scene suggests the difference between genius and normal smart human being, as geniuses don't just have higher than normal skill levels, but poccess mental abilities that totally surpass human capacity. This plays an important role as the other main lead, Paige, the waitress can't comprehend her genius son, and called him "mentally challenged".

This parallel is a good setup in its own way coupled with the situation of the TV fixing scene and the pseudo chess play between Walter and Paige's son, Ralph using sugar bottles. Again not a bad scene to indicate the loneliness of being a genius. And it deserves to be noticed.

What's the problem of this show?

the problem, in its core, is that it's pretty generic followed by this point, the team is nothing new: an OCD type nerd, a womanizer dressed but really romantic trouble maker, a chick who can do dude stuff better than dude and a team lead who is a CIA or FBI.

Yep, pretty generic when you look this way. Although you have to realize that the loneliness and misunderstanding part of being a genius is handled pretty well in some of the later scenes too, it's really not that worth the time, as some of the other reviews point out, the plane-will-crush scenario will unlikely to happen, and even if it is, it has nothing to do with software failure, but hardware failures. I will not get into that.

All in all, I wouldn't say it's bad, but you have to like the character in order to love this show, especially the pilot, if you don't want to turn off your brain and you are looking for something intelligent to see, I wouldn't suggest this show.

A bit silly but entertaining
wms-9274120 August 2021
Scorpion takes a handful of socially inept geniuses and, pairing them with an empathetic "normal" person has them solving problems and saving the day for America or Los Angeles or whoever.

Geniuses are rarely socially inept. Like everyone else, super-intelligent people run the whole range of emotional skills. It's a Hollywood trope that "regular" folks like you and me can't effectively communicate with those few whose IQs are over 180. It's nonsense, and based on the first episode, the viewer has to manage a severe suspension of disbelief to buy into the storylines, as well as the premise.

Having written all that, it sure was a lot of fun. I can accept the premise without agreeing with it (and even though I suspect it's a bit insulting) and several of the characters are quite likable. Scorpion is fun, but I wouldn't recommend anyone take it seriously. I've only seen one episode, however; if the producers of the show start taking it too seriously it will fall over from its own weight.

Warning: Spoilers
OK...... the ATC lost communication with everything single planes because there is a "automatic software update"?? Then.... they have a backup that they can restore but none of the IT guy in LAX airport realize that they can restore the system? Then they need a guy with iQ 197 to remind them they can restore from backup? Then.... the backup only keep 24hrs so they have a few hour left to get it???? Then the backup is lock in a office that is closed on weekend you need to physically break into the office and pull out the harddisk before the automatic backup will not overwrite the old backup??? WTF?? You can remotely upload backup to that office but you cannot restore from that office remotely???? The worse part of the script is..... they managed to get the harddisk but it is magnetized and damaged by the speakers in the car???? The script is a joke.....

Brilliant pilot

Warning: Spoilers
I LOVED this pilot. So exciting and makes you want to watch more. The bit when Toby comes running into view and the music is great. The instant chemistry between Paige and Walter is obvious and love the interaction with Ralph.

Brilliant escapism - enjoyable to watch
hibbittsian4 March 2019
I watched this with an open mind and really enjoyed the way it hung together.!

Quite gripping in parts and very believable if you recognise that some the team have very personal issues around Autism/ Asd etc ! can't wait to watch the rest of the series

Genuinely a fantastic TV Show
finnleighton11 April 2017
Scorpion is an excellent TV show which has drastically developed since it's Pilot in September 2014. After watching every single episode that is out I can't help but write this review.

Some may argue that the plot of this is repetitive but each time it is different. Yes it's the same thing happening over and over (disasters here and there) but the way that they solve it always varies and always keeps it interesting. I personally think that the team developing and writing the script for Scorpion have absolutely nailed the secondary plot, the romance, and the development of the characters. They have written the script to perfection with how each character is dependent on each other. Walter on Paige, of course, then Toby's constant efforts to show off to Happy, and Sly and Cabe get on well with each other.

In Scorpion there are many events in these sub plots, that actually can really annoy you, and that's because you are actually annoyed when things don't go the way that you want (Walter and Paige) and you know its a good script when you actually get emotionally involved with the relationships.

Kudos to you Scorpion.

Show about geniuses insults viewers' intelligence
Ralpho15 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There may be spoilers here, so consider yourself warned.

I like the concept, but the problem the writers came up with for the genius squad to solve is ridiculous.

Due to a software problem, air traffic control system at LAX is inoperative. Somehow this means that dozens of airliners awaiting clearance to land simply can't do so. One pilot is even afraid to descend for fear of hitting another plane. But 30 minutes later a pilot (maybe the same one) has no problem buzzing the airport twice! Also, Air Force fighters are in the area and primed to shoot down dozens of airliners because they can't land.

In what universe does that make sense?

If that airliner can buzz an airfield, why can't it also land there? Why can't all the airliners divert to San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, etc.?

The producers seem to have figured that no one will care about the glaring plot hole if characters are interesting and suspense is maintained. They were probably right, as the series is successful. But it doesn't say much about critical thinking ability of average Americans.

The show is a total joke.
michael-822-85995512 October 2014
Basically, like the other reviewer said, none of this makes sense. The guy is some kind of super genius and what he does for living is fixing wifi. OK, fine, that's not completely impossible. A special agent has 2 hours to land 60 something planes and he comes to this particular dude. Why? This is a job for whoever set up the system update thing. By the way, yeah, a software update can totally take out a call centre for a full day. But no, there is no way in hell it will cause the sort of issue they are talking about. OK, fine, maybe somebody intentionally messed with the software which we don't know about, fine. But how can you have 24 hour backups that erase each other every 24 hours? And backups of WHAT, by the way. So let's go back to where the FBI agent comes to these guys and they agree to work for him. Why do they need to go anywhere? They already have all their tools and people, and they have no time, just do it remotely, what's your problem. As they get in the car and drive for a bit these "geniuses" realize - oh damn, we don't have to be there. I'm not a genius, and I'm not a superhacker, but that one was kind of obvious. So instead of driving back the guy goes, OK we need wifi with 0 % chance of going down. Why? Why in god's name do you need wifi for this? You really feel that the inconvenience of wired network connection is going to be a major issue here? What you really need is a good internet connection. Not necessarily a 100.0% reliable, just fast and working well at the moment. OK, fine. Next they go and do their thing and even get the hard drive. And by the way, no, this is not how data centres run. What they have one hard drive with no redundancy or fragmentation? Yeah, no. Then they have 2 of these super geniuses handle the hard drive. For some weird reason they have to bring it back with them. Because there is no internet in the data centre? Haha, right. OK, whatever. But then these two manage to destroy the hard drive on their way back by putting it next to a magnet. Well done. And then the part where the cute waitress mom is driving her car like it's her last day on earth. Just FYI, it's NOT helping you drive like crazy if all the street lights are turning green with no warning 1 second or less before you get to them. Hello, the other cars don't have the time to react. You are just basically running all red lights and hoping no one kills you. At that point I stopped watching. The show is a total joke.

Bad, bad, predictible and impossible!!
gnietof1 October 2020
What a big bunch of stupid situations! A file being downloaded by cable between a plane and a Ferrari? A plane trying to contact a Wifi just flying by? A 'genius' solving an airport problem from a coffee shop?

This 'pilot' has been horrible and it seems that, according to other reviewers, this was the best chapter.

OMG!!

Many negative things but most of all BORING
lukehere9913 October 2014
Who are these characters?

Why are they in the positions we're being shown?

What is even in the plane?

What does all of this even mean?

Scorpion doesn't stop to explain these things. It just speeds past the details with nerd jokes, some of which I did smirk at, and flashy action scenes to distract you. I have no interest in the series whatsoever it's a tedious 40 minutes with no redeeming features. But I grant it this one kind of positive comment. I will keep on watching just to see whether it gets better.

Doubt it will though.

Like Mission Impossible, but less believable
billsoccer18 July 2020
From the first scene, where a child who hacked into Nasa is raided by what seems to be a Delta-6 team, the plot is over-ambitious. 4 misfit stereotypical geniuses instantly solve a myriad of problems each of which would require a team and much more time. I applaud the intent, but there's just too much for one to swallow. Even Mission Impossible takes more than an hour to solve these problems!

Boring Nerd Losers
Johnny_West28 July 2022
Tubby Tony, Sayonara Sally, Virgin Mary & her genius son Mopie, Golf Ball Billy, and Goldbag the ultimate genius all team up to be incredibly lame, condescending, conceited, and boring. Their main super-power is that they can talk fast when they are regurgitating useless facts and information.

This is a good show to put on for background noise while you are doing something.

FIRST Episode THE BEST by far......
Dr_Sagan5 December 2014
OK. I wrote a stellar review after seeing the pilot episode. Most of the viewers (at least in this board) were furious (mark the word) and hated the show.

Just saw it again and it is by far the best Actually, in my opinion all the episodes after that are mediocre to say the least.

So, I searched "who was behind the pilot" and it was Justin Lin. The Taiwanese-born American film director whose films have grossed $2 billion worldwide and he's best known for the Fast and the Furious franchise. (I told you to mark the word!)

Anyway. The pilot of Scorpion (despite some obvious "liberties" with the script) it is by far the best and one of my favorites TV-episodes for 2014.

Although I'm not a fan of the F&F movies. I'm now d/l "Better Luck Tomorrow" a 2002 of Lin to see his directorial skills once more.

A show concerned with true genius but clearly without genius writers
hans-5581521 May 2023
The Pilot episode is a total mess.

It not only has bad acting but also a plot thats so crazy and over top that its almost pure satire. It tries to overload itself so hard with action that it forgets that sometimes less is more.

The basic idea is not bad but the way it is written is an insult to even average IQ (the measurement unit the show likes to flaunt every single chance).

Im a Software Dev and I immediately realized that the whole IT side of the plot made no sense what so ever. I dont doubt that other professions will feel similar about their side.

When the 197 IQ genius is stupid it becomes a bad joke.

Obviously it is hard to write something smarter than oneself. Even more so when the IQ they picked is so unbelievably high that the dude could probably invent all human inventions himself in one hour prep time in a cave. But anyway it quickly becomes apparent that the writers are not even able to wow the average viewer which is quite telling.
