This is a documentary about one of Australia's most notorious crimes, a triple murder in 1978 by recidivist John Ernest Cribb. The victims were mother of six Valda Connell, her young son and daughter.
After kidnapping them in what might have been a botched robbery, Cribb raped Mrs Connell at knifepoint. Later, both she and the young ones were murdered. This was not a planned crime, and the way he tried to dispose of the bodies would have been comical were it not so horrific. Eventually he abandoned them in the stolen car, and they were soon found. So was Cribb, and he was arrested after a hostage situation.
Incredibly, instead of being remanded to a maximum security prison, this extremely dangerous triple murderer was sent to a psychiatric hospital where he escaped with someone who shared his bloodlust. Before they were recaptured, they had kidnapped and repeatedly raped two teenage girls, although no one else was murdered. Cribb was given three life sentences.
Difficult though it may be to fathom, some daffy woman actually married Cribb, and in 1990 he made a legal bid for freedom. Needless to say, this monster has not been released.
There are some fairly graphic reconstructions in this documentary. Family members talk about their loss. Detectives who worked on the case also talk about it.
