UK sales company Film Republic has picked up international sales for Brazilian director José Pedro Goulart’s feature debut Point Zero (Ponto Zero) - one of the films presented in Locarno’s Carte Blanche showcase dedicated to Brazil last year.
The co-production between Porto Alegre-based Minima and Okna Producoes centres on one fateful night when a young boy, faced with many challenges at home and in school, has to learn to grow up very quickly after stealing his violent father’s car to find a call girl whose number he found of the windscreen.
Film Republic’s managing director Xavier Henry-Rashid is in Locarno this week for the international premire at the independent Critics’ Week of Karolina Bielawska’s award-winning Polish documentary Call Me Marianna.

The biggest deals of this year’s Cannes Marché du Film and how the Competition titles sold throughout the festival.
Behind the glamour of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, business was booming at the Marché du Film (May 13-22), with representatives from 120 countries in attendance - up four on 2014.
A total 3,300 films were on offer this year, around 1,000 at the project stage, with an estimated 11,000 film professionals in attendance, in line with last year.
In the opening days, Marché chief Jérôme Paillard told Screen: “Acquisition agents are telling me that it’s the first time in a number of years that there are so many big projects. I’ve been told there are around 50 high profile projects on offer.”

Universal Pictures and Focus Features took worldwide rights to Tom Ford’s upcoming thriller Nocturnal Animals, starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, in a deal reportedly worth $20m. [Story]

What’s Between Us acquired for Germany and Austria by Pro-Fun Media Filmverleih.
Claudia Lorenz’s What’s Between Us (Unter der Haut) has been acquired here at the market for release in Germany and Austria from Film Republic.
Axel Schmidt’s Pro-Fun Media Filmverleih has secured rights to the Swiss drama about a struggling married couple, which debuted at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January and was produced by Elena Pedrazzoli at Peacock Film.
Pro-Fun will give the film a theatrical release this autumn.
The deal was negotiated between Pro-Fun’s Axel Schmidt and Film Republic’s Xavier Henry-Rashid, who confirmed other deals are in discussion for France and North America.
Xenix Filmdistribution releases the film domestically in Switzerland.
