Brutally Realistic

Deceived by her treacherous boyfriend into believing that she is destined for success as an actress in the film industry, a beautiful but naive young woman by the name of "Malee" (Viyada Umarin) leaves her home in the country to accompany him to Bangkok. Unfortunately, when she wakes up in a hotel room the next morning she is shocked to discover that her boyfriend-and her money-are gone and that she has been left to pay the bill. Not only that, but before her boyfriend left he sold her to a man named "Thone" (Sorapong Chatree) who works as a pimp for the hotel-and he has no concern for her as a human being. So with no money and nowhere else to turn she is forced to become a prostitute from that day on. However, even though she feels trapped and humiliated in this squalid environment, she continues to dream of the day that she can leave her sordid life behind and find true freedom and happiness on her own. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a difficult movie to watch because it was so brutally realistic. To that end, it showcases some of the hazards many of the young women encounter working in the sex industry in a very frank manner. Be that as it may, as far as the technical merits are concerned, I thought that the overall pace of the movie was rather slow and that some of the action scenes could have used a bit of improvement as well. Yet in spite of these flaws, Viyada Umarin put in a fine performance and the director (Chatrichalerm Yukol) deserves equal credit for his ability to capture the ugliness of the sex trade in Bangkok. That being said, although this was not a great movie by any means, I suppose it was worth the time spent and for that reason I have rated it accordingly. Average.

Thai social drama

Warning: Spoilers
ANGEL - aka HOTEL ANGEL - is a slice of social drama from early 1970s Thailand. The film follows the plight of a young woman living a poor but honest life in the country. Through the machinations of an unpleasant boyfriend, she heads to Bangkok hoping to break into the film industry, but instead finds herself forced into prostitution. The subject matter is sleazy and seedy but this film's execution is pretty highbrow, a serious look at the subject matter rather than a straight exploitation flick. As such it's low key and realistically acted, heavy on the moralising and depicting a girl trapped by society rather than cruel thugs. It'll be a bit slow to most viewers, unless they're particularly interested in the country or genre.
