THE SILENT SERVICE "The Tautog Story" 1958

This is the 69th episode of the U.S. war series, "The Silent Service". The series was about the exploits of the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. Each episode is a stand-alone tale of the actions of a particular submarine. Most of the stories are about actions against the Japanese Navy and merchant fleet in the Pacific. There is also the odd tale from the Korean conflict. The series ran for 78 episodes during 1957 and 1958. The stories were all based on actual events. Some pretty good attention to detail here with the U.S Navy allowing filming on several WW 2 era Gato class subs.

Each episode started and ended with retired Real Admiral Thomas M. Dykers giving a breakdown of the action. Dykers became a writer, producer and technical adviser after leaving the service. He worked on films such as, TORPEDO ALLEY, FLAT TOP, THE FROGMEN, HELL AND HIGH WATER and SUBMARINE COMMAND.

This episode is about the submarine, the U.S.S. "Tautog". The episode is not about any particular patrol of the 13 that this submarine completed. The episode touches on several incidents of the highly successful career of the "Tautog". The "Tautog" started the war as one of five submarines based in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941.

The "Tautog" was soon out on patrol sinking her first Japanese vessel, a Japanese submarine "RO-30" on April 26, 1942. The "Tautog" would sink another enemy submarine, "I-28" later on the same patrol.

The episode goes on telling the viewer about the exploits of the "Tautog", which would end the conflict with the remarkable total of 26 enemy vessels, worth 72,000 tons on her scorecard.

The "Tautog" would end her days as part of the Great Lakes Naval Training Reserve based in Milwaukee. The submarine would finally be sold for scrap in Nov. 1959.

The cast includes, Robert Knapp, Ray Kellogg, Peter Leeds and John Conwell.
