Blacklist meets Texas Chainsaw .. and they make it work
A_Different_Drummer12 April 2015
The "in" thing today in TV drama is to constantly keep the audience off-guard.

It is a tricky road to walk. You spend time and dollars building a formula and then, without warning, you ditch it and try to take things up a notch.

Initially I had my doubts about this episode. It is WAY outside the usual story arc. But it gradually builds momentum until by the climax you feel like you are watching the sort of iconic play that CABIN IN THE WOODS tried so desperately to de-construct.

Although odd in the context of the series, the episode is truly mesmerizing. Peter Fonda -- and I am guessing most readers of this review will not remember his breakout role as a biker -- was nothing less than flat-out creepy.

Props for taking the risk. Props for delivering the goods.

A glance into Dembe's past
foamythefearsome27 August 2022
I'm happy to see Dembe being a more prominent part of the cast this season, and this episode really strengthens his character by providing an insight in his past. It reveals his connection to Reddington nicely, and explains his ongoing loyalty. It also shows a side of Reddington that does not surface that often - one in which you can see he is not all bad.

I'm always glad to see a series that keeps developing their characters even after they are originally defined in the first episode or season, and this episode is a nice example of how to do that. It enhanced the emotional moments from Anslo Garrick even further, too.

Plus, this was scary as hell - that was the creepiest fireside gathering I've seen in a while.

Real Improvement
Hitchcoc9 November 2022
The 9 instead of a 10 is because of what another reviewer said. The sheer stupidity of the agents at times. The FBI has to screen people so thoroughly and have so much invested that they can't have the kinds of loose cannons running around. But, once again, if concussion protocol were a part of their world, their brains would be pure mush by now. Not to mention the addiction and the inability to confront it. The whole business of cartels and their implications was interesting. Those people in the woods are something else. I did enjoy Red's story about Dembe and the humanity of the cold, killer in this instance. I had also forgotten about Peter Fonds, whom I never recognized through the episode. I must have missed the early credits. After the last episode (a bust, in my opinion), this was better written and very enjoyable.

Background of Dembe

Warning: Spoilers
I am watching The Blacklist series again, which I never finished the first time. I enjoy the series immensely.

I am not alone in the question of how Dembe became Reddington's bodyguard/trusted lieutenant/confidante. He is a "silent" character, faithful to Reddington, and treated well. There are many forums dedicated to him, which I have no time/interest to peruse, but the interest into his character remains.

The episode explains briefly how Red saved him, and that the characters of Dembe and Red are different, Dembe being the better man. The writer(s), IMO, are spot-on. Both character types must co-exist in life.

Brain trauma?

Ressler and Keen must be the dumbest agents in the history of the FBI. The fact they are continually turning their backs to shady characters and get hit on the head a lot must be the reason for their stupidity.
