Next to nursey rhymes and small girls in frilly dresses, one of the things horror filmmakers are most keen to ‘subvert’ are fairy tales. From The Company Of Wolves and Deep In The Woods to Hunted and Final Girl, there are more Red Riding Hoods than you can shake a stick at, Hansel And Gretel feature in both US and South Korean versions, and The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty also makes its mark. Andy Edwards’ Cinderella’s Revenge is another offering in this tradition, mixing an appreciation of its story’s bloody roots with a gory modern twist.
Although Edwards directs, he didn’t write the script, and that shows in what is probably his weakest effort to date. It’s a film that doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. For the first 45 minutes it plays it very straight, the only intentional squirm moment involving mutilations...

The idea of retelling placid and gentle children's fairy tales in a bloody, horror milieu is hardly new. Think of a fairy tale or beloved children's classic, and odds are good that someone has already transformed it into a horror movie. Off the top of my head: Neil Jordan made a horror movie out of Little Red Riding Hood with "The Company of Wolves" in 1984. Later, in 1996, filmmaker Matthew Bright brought the same story into a scuzzy modern setting with "Freeway." 1997 saw the release of "Snow White: A Tale of Terror" with Sigourney Weaver as the evil queen.
"The Little Mermaid" was transformed into an awesome 2015 horror musical called "The Lure." Pinocchio starred in "Pinocchio's Revenge." The Gingerbread Man was transformed into "The Gingerdead Man". A quick stroll through the spider-webbed hallways of Tubi might reveal titles like "The Curse of Sleeping Beauty," 1995's "Rumplestiltskin," and multiple films called "The Tooth Fairy.

Pearry Reginald Teo, the Singaporean-born genre filmmaker behind the Bai Ling-starring The Gene Generation and Dmx‘s last movie, Fast Vengeance, has died. He was 44.
Teo died Thursday of an unknown cause in his home in North Hollywood, his rep Italia Gandolfo told The Hollywood Reporter.
The writer-director’s body of work included the Hellraiser-inspired Necromentia (2009) and The Assent (2019), a movie about exorcism that featured Tatum O’Neal and premiered at the Toronto After Dark Festival.
Teo also served as an executive producer on Warner Bros.’ Cloud Atlas, directed by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer.
The Gene Generation (2007), released by Lionsgate and made for a reported $2.5 million, starred Ling as a kick-ass assassin battling DNA hackers and included a cameo by Faye Dunaway.
Fast Vengeance (2021), starring martial arts star D.Y. Sao, centered on the world of underground motorcycle racing. (Sao and Teo would reunite for 2022’s Shadow Master.)

Shadowhunters may have come to a bittersweet conclusion, but another one of its actors had landed a new TV role.
Dominic Sherwood, who played Jace on the recently canceled Freeform drama, has joined the cast of Showtime's Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
He is one of six new additions, joining the series alongside Adam Rodriguez, Michael Gladis, Lorenza Izzo, Thomas Kretschman, and Ethan Peck.
The new series is set in 1938 Los Angeles, and focuses on Det. Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto), who becomes embroiled in an epic story following a murder that shocks the city.
It quickly paves the way for Tiago and his family “grappling with powerful forces that threaten to tear them apart,” according to the official logline.

“Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” is rounding out its cast with the addition of six new actors.
Michael Gladis has joined the show as a series regular, while Lorenza Izzo, Adam Rodriguez, Thomas Kretschmann, and Dominic Sherwood will appear in recurring roles. Ethan Peck will guest star in multiple episodes. The six join previously announced cast members Natalie Dormer, Daniel Zovatto, Kerry Bishé, Adriana Barraza, Rory Kinnear, Jessica Garza, Johnathan Nieves, Nathan Lane, Amy Madigan, Brent Spiner, and Lin Shaye.
Described as a spiritual descendant of the original “Penny Dreadful,” the new series opens in 1938 Los Angeles. When a grisly murder shocks the city, Detective Tiago Vega (Zovatto) is embroiled in a story that reflects the history of Los Angeles: from the building of the city’s first freeways and its deep traditions of Mexican-American folklore, to the dangerous espionage actions of the Third Reich and the rise of radio evangelism.

India Eisley grew up on sets because her mother was an actress, and she booked her first role when she was only 10 years old. Her 15-year career has thus far consisted of quite a few films in addition to television (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”). Now, Eisley portrays the real-life Fauna Hodel, a woman who grew up believing she was mixed race, only to learn some dark truths about her origin story much later in life, in TNT’s limited series “I Am The Night.”

The most strong-willed people often ambitiously fight their internal demons and subsequently embrace life again after overcoming a difficult situation. But it isn’t until they’re unexpectedly forced to face off against an ancient external evil that relentlessly wants to control them that they undergo a stunning epiphany, and realize who they truly are as a person. That’s certainly the case with the captivating male protagonist in the new fantasy thriller, ‘The Curse of Sleeping Beauty,’ which was directed by Pearry Teo, who also co-wrote the script with Josh Nadler. The XLrator Media-distributed drama, which is now playing in select theaters and on VOD and iTunes, shows that even the character’s [ Read More ]

Hollywood keeps trying to make dark fairy tales happen (Red Riding Hood/Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), but after The Curse Of Sleeping Beauty, it might be time to give up. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a sucker for innocence lost. Who doesn’t love a good Christmas horror movie that transforms joy into fear? Granted, this adaptation of Sleeping Beauty is based on “Little Brier-Rose” by the Brothers Grimm, so deviousness is expected – but not to the degree Pearry Teo delivers. Disney’s whimsy long fades once Teo exposes the true horrors of a long-slumbering girl, yet this genre attempt struggles to find sinister definition, and might be droll enough to lull even the titular Beauty back to sleep.

Classic fairy tales often have dark themes that seem perfect for a horror movie adaptation. But for some reason they often miss the mark. When I first saw some of the images for The Curse of Sleeping Beauty I assumed that it was going to be a film that targets teenage girls as it’s main audience. Well it’s not that, but it is kind of a mess.
Directed by Perry Reginald Teo, The Curse of Sleeping Beauty follows Thomas Kaiser (Ethan Peck), a secluded artist who is haunted by the recurring dream of a sleeping woman. He learns that he has inherited a mansion, Kaiser Gardens, from his distant uncle. Thomas leaves the city after reading an unusually foreboding letter from his deceased uncle telling him that Kaiser Gardens has been in the family for centuries and that their bloodline serves as the protectors of the property. If there’s one director whose films I will watch without hesitation or question, it’s Pearry Teo. In fact his filmic career is actually one that is key to mine. His second film, the 2009 fear flick Necromentia (which I still think out-Hellraiser’d Hellraiser itself), was one of the first films I ever reviewed professionally; and I’ve reviewed each and every one of his films since. Why? Because of the impact his twisted vision in Necromentia had on me and because no matter the story, no matter the budget, Teo always finds something interesting, admittedly often dark, to do with the subject matter.

The Curse of Sleeping Beauty is part horror, part dark fantasy, part supernatural love story, and part haunted house movie. A film that tries to fit so much into a brisk eighty-nine minutes could easily wind up being a mess, but Sleeping Beauty combines its various genres and subgenres into something that feels like a coherent whole. The Curse of Sleeping Beauty might not fit comfortably into any one genre, but I say if a film works, it works, and The Curse of Sleeping beauty works.

A few details have emerged for director Pearry Teo's (Necromentia) The Curse of Sleeping Beauty. This title was picked up by XLRator Media for a theatrical release, which takes place in mid-May. As well, a trailer for this horror title was released in late March and that clip can be found here. Based on the Brother Grimm's tale titled "Little Briar Rose," the film appears as a dark fantasy tale. All of the details on The Curse of Sleeping Beauty are here. From the official synopsis, Thomas (Ethan Peck) inherits an ancestral home. He has also inherited an ancient curse, which is sourced back to the crusades. Burdened, Thomas turns to an ambitious realtor, Linda (Natalie Hall), and a paranormal expert, Richard (Bruce Davison), for help. But, this curse can only be lifted by rescuing Briar Rose from a deep sleep and netherworld. Here, only the most courageous or foolish dare enter.
