Sony's 'Universe of Marvel Characters' will include "Spider-Man" spin-off solo projects "Morbius", opening July 31, 2020, "Kraven The Hunter", "Silver Sable", "Nightwatch", "Silk", "Jackpot" and "Black Cat":

Despite its negative critical reception, last year’s Venom proved to be a big enough box office smash, to justify Sony pushing forward with plans for their own cinematic universe. And just as the McU has repeatedly built up to various Avengers movies, and the Dceu reached a point of culmination with 2017’s Justice League, it sounds like Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters is progressing with its own, ahem, endgame in mind.
According to a source close to We Got This Covered, Sony has plans to bring us a Maximum Carnage movie somewhere down the line. Presumably inspired by the 1993 comic book arc of the same name, the film would serve as the first big crossover event of the Sumc, which would bring together Venom, Carnage, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, Silver Sable, Black Cat and whoever else is lined up to join the cinematic universe.

Over the past quarter century, the Slamdance Film Festival has served as a launchpad for a number of now high profile filmmakers at the very start of their careers. Here is a baker’s dozen of some of the festival’s greatest discoveries.
Marc Forster
“Loungers”
Forster premiered his $10,000 debut in 1995 and grabbed the Audience Award, and has become one of the most versatile directors working, with other credits including “Monster’s Ball,” “Finding Neverland,” “Stay,” “The Kite Runner,” “Stranger Than Fiction,” “Quantum of Solace,” “World War Z” and “Christopher Robin.”
Rian Johnson
“Evil Demon Golfball from Hell!!!”
Johnson’s irreverent short film played the festival in 1996, launching a career that has dabbled in artistic indies and big-budget franchise blockbusters (“Star Wars: The Last Jedi”).
Greg Mottola
“The Daytrippers”
The writer-director’s 1996 feature debut was produced by Steven Soderbergh and got Mottola work on cult-classic television series “Undeclared,” “Arrested Development,...

Venom arrived in theaters back in October to middling reviews, but that didn't stop talk of all the potential sequels and spinoffs it might spawn.
In an August interview with Total Film, Tom Hardy revealed that Marvel could make up to three Venom movies, saying, "We've signed up for three of them. So it's very much an open case. We'll see what people's responses are to it." Variety also predicted that if the film delivered at the box office, then Sony would move fast to introduce a number of heroes and villains from the Spider-Man universe in the form of sequels to the Hardy outing, as well as stand-alone films. At the moment, Sony's licensing pact with Marvel affords it the rights to around 900 characters, so the possibilities are pretty much endless.

It’s been awhile since we’ve had an update on the Sinister Six movie that director Drew Goddard signed on to direct five years ago.
After Sony Pictures teamed up with Marvel for Spider-Man, and they started announcing films for Venom, Morbius, Black Cat, and Silver Sable, I just assumed the Sinister Six Spider-Man villain team-up project was dead. Well, it’s not!
According to producer Amy Pascal, “I’m just waiting for Drew to be ready to direct it. I would do anything with Drew Goddard. I’m just waiting for him to tell me he wants to.”
Goddard talked about working on the film project last October in an interview with THR saying:

Earlier this week, a juicy rumor reared its head that claimed Marvel has “big plans” for Norman Osborn in the McU and that the studio is currently working on extending its deal with Sony in order to acquire him. As Venom makes clear, though Marvel has Spider-Man in their toy box, Sony’s still holding on to some of the other major figures in the Spidey mythology in order to build their own franchise.
Despite this, the man most commonly known as Green Goblin might be making the jump over to the McU soon. Writer Daniel Rpk started the rumor on Twitter with his post about Marvel’s interest in Osborn – something that was quickly supported by Charles Murphy of That Hashtag Show. Murphy claimed that Norman was supposed to be in Sony’s Silver & Black but due to Marvel’s interest in using him, the script had to go...

It has been a while since a major movie was able to score a big box office victory despite negative reviews from critics, but Sony’s “Venom” did that with a $205 million global launch this past weekend, including $80 million domestically and without the help of China. On Monday, the film added another $9.6 million to its domestic total to push its four-day total to just under $90 million.
“I can’t say enough what an important win this was for Sony,” said Exhibitor Relations analyst Jeff Bock. “They need more successful franchises along with ‘Jumanji’ and they needed to prove that they could make a hit comic book movie without Marvel Studios, and they rolled the dice with Venom and it paid off with a record opening.”

Silver & Black is one of those Spider-Man spinoffs from Sony Pictures that’s yet to unveil any tangible intel, and yet, it’s still trucking along in development. Slowly, but surely…
Last we reported, the Powers That Be wanted to split the film into two standalone adventures featuring Black Cat and Silver Sable, respectively, though a new interview with Venom producer Matt Tolmach suggests otherwise.
Chatting to Screen Rant, Tolmach confirmed that, yes, Silver & Black is still gestating in development as Gina Prince-Bythewood is currently working on the script. And the female-fronted spinoff won’t progress any further until the story is locked in – lest they risk fast-tracking a half-baked Spidey movie.
Yes. Yes. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s right. The script’s gotta be right. It’s true with all of these movies.

Aside from Logan, there really aren’t many comic book movies that ship without a post-credits scene.
And while the director has been tight-lipped about almost every aspect of the movie, Venom‘s Ruben Fleischer has essentially confirmed that next month’s Spider-Man-less Spider-Man spinoff will have a post-credits sting, after all.
News comes to us by way of Fandango, where Fleischer stated that the decision to overlook an after-credits tease would only be a waste of potential, particularly for a movie like Venom, which will soon face the difficult task of launching an entire franchise of comic book adaptations – other projects percolating in development include Kraven, Morbius, Nightwatch and the Silver and Black movies. And yes, that’s movies plural, after Sony made the decision to split is female ensemble piece into two separate products.
So perhaps Venom will herald some form of tease for Silver Sable or Black Cat?...

With so many comic book franchises flickering into life across the four corners of Hollywood, you’d be forgiven of losing track of who owns who.
Making matters worse is the fact that, when Marvel filed for bankruptcy back in the ’90s, the House of M sold many of its A-list characters to rival studios in a last-ditch attempt to stay above water. Fast forward to now, and Marvel Studios is a multi-billion dollar powerhouse that tends to rule over box office characters year in, year out.
And while Deadpool and the X-Men are homeward bound thanks to Disney’s pursuit of 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures currently holds the film rights to “roughly 900 Marvel characters.” Nine hundred!
That’s a whole lot of potential brimming under the hood of Sony’s fledgling Marvel Universe (official name: Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters), and it all kicks off with Venom this fall.

Sony Pictures has made a big change to their Marvel movie lineup. According to Deadline, the studio has scrapped the Silver & Black movie. The new plan is to make two separate solo films. One will revolve around the war criminal bounty hunter Silver Sable and the other will focus on the burglar Black Cat.
The report goes on to say that the writer and director who was developing Silver & Black, Gina Prince-Bythwood, will depart but still be a producer on the movie. The studio will go out and hire a couple new female directors to take on the projects.
I actually like the idea of separate films with these characters a lot more. They have enough story to play with. It will also give them the ability to properly build up and establish the characters and then eventually bring them together if that's something they want to do.

Badass as Venom may look, it’s become apparent to all that Sony is just throwing whatever they can at the wall and seeing what’ll stick. I mean, do we really need solo movies for the likes of Morbius and Kraven the Hunter before they’ve been established in prior flicks? Yes, comic book readers may know who they are, but the the average moviegoer probably doesn’t – nor do they have any reason to pay for a ticket.
On that note, now seems like the opportune time to discuss the rocky road endured by Silver & Black. Having been a hot topic of discussion back in 2017, it was originally set to introduce Silver Sable and Black Cat to the big screen via a team-up picture of their own. But after news saying the project had been stuck in development begun spreading, many of us were more than ready to write it off.

Sony’s Marvel title Silver & Black isn’t moving forward, but will be split up into two separate movies. The original movie was to revolve around Silver Sable, the boss of a war criminal bounty org, and burglar Black Cat. The first title will likely be Black Cat.
It is also expected that Gina Prince-Bythewood, the writer and director of Silver & Black, will depart, but still produce the separate films. If she leaves, the studio will reportedly hire another female director. Sony has access to 900 Marvel characters, and its intent is to grow canons and franchises. “Venom,” the highly anticipated comic book adaptation that hits theaters in October, isn’t just an attempt to do justice to the legendary symbiote after a lackluster appearance in 2007’s “Spider-Man 3.” It’s also a big-budget bet by Sony Pictures that the world of Spider-Man can spawn an inter-connected series of superhero movies to rival what Disney has created with its Marvel characters and what Warner Bros. is attempting to pull of with its DC Comics heroes and villains.
With Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s film studio, Sony is now the only major studio outside of the Magic Kingdom with the licensing rights to Marvel characters. Fox has long had rights to “Fantastic Four” and “The X-Men,” pillars of the Marvel empire, that will now thanks to the magic of a multi-billion dollar corporate merger, be able to interact with Captain America, Iron Man, and other members of the Avengers.

It was a confusing ride for a while there, but it seems like a fact now that Tom Holland won’t feature as Peter Parker in the upcoming Venom solo movie, meaning Sony’s string of Spider-Man-less spinoff movies won’t have any connections to the McU. But that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see our friendly neighborhood hero in these films.
One optimistic fan has come up with a theory on Reddit, suggesting that Andrew Garfield from Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man movies could return for Venom and beyond, turning up for the odd cameos to give the various spinoffs – including Silver & Black and Morbius – some connective tissue.
Here’s how user @Animation_Bat describes their idea:
The upcoming Venom movie is supposed to be the first film in Sony’s Marvel Universe. There has been rumors and speculation that it could be connected to the McU.

If you’re a “Spider-Man” fan and you hear the recent news that Sony is moving ahead with a spin-off film based on Kraven the Hunter, you can’t help but feel disappointed. Unlike “Venom,” “Nightwatch,” “Morbius the Living Vampire,” or “Silver & Black,” Kraven is a character who feels completely useless without Peter Parker.
But alas, according to Collider, Sony is moving ahead on their “Kraven the Hunter” film and have hired writer Richard Wenk to figure out the question, “What does Kraven the Hunter hunt if he can’t hunt Spider-Man?” Wenk is probably best known for his work on a variety of Antoine Fuqua movies including the ‘Equalizer’ series and “The Magnificent Seven.” However, he’s also written “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back” and “The Expendables 2,” so Wenk is clearly an action guy.

We may not have a Spider-Man in the world that will soon be inhabited by Venom, but it now looks like we will have a Hunter, thanks to the mind behind The Equalizer 2.
Sony has been building there own Spider-Less-Verse based on characters in the Spider-Man lore, even if they don't have any plan to bring in the wall crawler himself. Venom drops later this year, and we know that there are plans to bring in a Silver Sable and Black Cat film entitled Silver & Black, as well as a film centered around Morbius The Living Vampire. However, we also think they are holding off on moving forward until they see just how Venom does in theaters, but that's not stopping them from lining up projects in hopes of a big hit.

You can go ahead and add Sergei Kravinoff’s name to the list of Spider-Man villains destined for the big screen.
Collider is reporting today that Richard Wenk (The Equalizer 2) has climbed aboard to hash out a script for Kraven the Hunter, which looks set to become the latest Sony-backed Spidey spinoff alongside Venom, Silk, Silver & Black, Nightwatch and the Jared Leto-fronted vampire movie, Morbius.
All of these projects are currently hinging on Venom‘s potential success – or lack thereof – as Sony Pictures may well be staring down the face of a Dark Universe-like situation come October where their franchise-starter flops spectacularly, only to raise serious question marks over future installments.
But that’s the glass-half-empty scenario; Sony is beginning to develop a Kraven the Hunter movie sans Spider-Man, who is still tied up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That leaves Wenk facing the somewhat difficult...

It appears like filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood is really aching to do an action film for her next project. The director of films like “The Secret Life of Bees” and “Beyond the Lights” has been attached to the upcoming on-again, off-again “Spider-Man” spin-off film “Silver & Black,” but with that film in limbo, reports are surfacing that she’s moving onto something else.

Though Venom is looking pretty great and Morbius seems to be moving into production impressively quickly, the black sheep of the Spider-verse family, Silver & Black, sounds like it’s still stuck in development hell.
The film follows two prominent female characters in the Spiderverse, Silver Sablinova aka Silver Sable and Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat, and while not much else is known about the project at the moment other than that it’s set to be helmed by Cloak & Dagger director Gina Prince-Bythewood, things aren’t looking too good for it right now.
Apparently frustrated with the slow pace of development, the aforementioned director has temporarily jumped ship to Old Guard, which looks set to shoot fairly soon. That film’s about a small group of immortal soldiers who’ve been working as mercenaries throughout the ages, only to have their cover blown by a nefarious organization that’s been spying on them.

On paper, Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man-less Spidey-verse, comprised of supporting characters like Venom, Morbius and Silver & Black sounds like it shouldn’t work. After all, it’s a bit like being served a burger without the patty inside. But to their credit, they’re making it work. I mean, from the reactions to that Comic-Con footage, they’ve really nailed the gory body horror of Venom, and what we’re hearing about the Jared Leto-starring Morbius project sounds pretty promising.
But now we’re learning that we might be seeing Spider-Man in this universe, after all. Venom director Ruben Fleischer was asked directly about it by CinemaBlend at San Diego Comic-Con and said the following:
Any true fan of Venom would love to see him go against Spider-Man. So I have to think that’s gonna happen at some point.
So, there you have it – what sounds like confirmation...

I’ve gotta hand it to Sony Pictures, as they really seem committed to their strange Spidey-verse. Not only do we have this fall’s Venom, but there’s Spike Lee’s Nightwatch and the slightly delayed Silver & Black coming, too.
Still, they surprised everyone with the late June announcement that they’d snagged Jared Leto for the title role in Morbius, with Safe House and Life director Daniel Espinosa set to helm. The news was particularly shocking as Leto’s already The Joker in Warner Bros’ Dceu and had been expected to reprise the role in various sequels – which are apparently still going ahead (though I wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t).
Right now, Morbius remains an unknown quantity, although a new casting call may shed a bit of light on the film’s broad strokes. Ths is reporting that the movie will pit Morbius against...

Though Spider-Man is part of the McU due to a rare co-production deal with Marvel Studios, Sony’s still working on its own cinematic universe built around the other heroes, anti-heroes and villains that populate Peter Parker’s corner of the Marvel world. First up, of course, is October’s Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer and starring Tom Hardy as the symbiote-infected Eddie Brock. Exactly what kind of plans Sony has for this franchise isn’t totally clear at present, but Vulture’s done their best to get to the bottom of it by talking to numerous individuals who’ve been involved behind the scenes.
First off, one anonymous writer clarified Sony’s approach to creating a successful cinematic universe: make good movies first.
“At the core of the endeavor to make a universe lies a deep cynicism. The audience thinks you’re just trying to take their money. It’s not unfounded.

Sierra Burgess is smart. Sierra Burgess is driven. Sierra Burgess isn’t into the typical trappings of high school. Sierra Burgess is her own woman. Sierra Burgess is… a loser? In Netflix’s latest high-school set rom-com — joining the likes of “The Kissing Booth” and “Alex Strangelove” — beloved “Stranger Things” breakout Shannon Purser stars as the eponymous Sierra Burgess, who is not a loser, at least by her own approximation (or that of anyone who values cool stuff like brains and ambition). But in the teenage wilds of high school, she’s just not cool.
Can a romance change that? Should it?
In “Sierra Burgess Is a Loser,” Purser’s Sierra is on track to getting the hell out of her high school nightmare — bolstered by some very impressive Sat scores — but she’s hamstrung by the fact that there’s not much else that seems to make her stand out.

Jared Leto is Morbius, the Living Vampire, pending some final negotiations.
Deadline broke the news earlier today that Leto, best known for Suicide Squad, Dallas Buyers Club and being the frontman of 30 Seconds to Mars, is prepared to spearhead Sony’s latest Spider-Man spinoff with Daniel Espinosa (Life) on directing duties.
We know the studio is plotting its own Marvel universe with characters like Venom, Nightwatch, Silk and the long-in-development Silver & Black movie, and it all begins with the launch of Eddie Brock’s solo film this October.
But for those worried that Jared Leto’s involvement in Morbius will affect his ongoing commitment to the DC Extended Universe and its many Joker-related projects – namely Joker and Harley Quinn and Warner’s newfangled solo movie, not to be confused with the Todd Phillips-directed offshoot that has Joaquin Phoenix attached to star – Variety has published a follow-up report that ought to allay any fears.

A movie is in the works based on the Marvel comic “Silk,” which centers on Korean-American superheroine Cindy Moon.
Sony Pictures and producer Amy Pascal are developing the film based on a character that first appeared in “The Amazing Spider-Man #1” in 2014 — created by writer Dan Slott and artist Humberto Ramos. She’s part of the basic Peter Parker storyline about a demonstration on the use of radioactive rays at a science exhibit gone wrong. A spider is exposed to large amounts of radiation and bites Parker — giving him the power to become Spider-Man.
Moon, a student in Parker’s class, is also bitten by the radioactive spider around the same time and gains the ability to move at incredible speed, shoot webs out of her fingertips, and possess an advanced Spider-Sense (known as Silk Sense). Tiffany Espensen played the character in last year’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which Pascal produced with Marvel topper Kevin Feige.

Despite Venom looking better and better the more footage we see from it, True Believers have some valid complaints whenever they say it makes little sense to release Spider-Man spinoffs that feature absolutely no inclusion of the wall-crawler himself. Likewise, Silver & Black has been approached with such hesitation.
Don’t get me wrong, seeing both Silver Sable and Black Cat – especially the latter – up on the silver screen is long overdue, but I’ve been among the ilk questioning if this team-up flick is the right way to do so. In short, Felicia Hardy is essentially Webhead’s equivalent of Catwoman, so it makes little sense to give her a headlining gig before pairing her with Spidey for at least one film.

As evident with last night’s release date changes from Sony, their Marvel Spider-Man spinoff Silver & Black is currently off their 2019 slate as they look for a new date on the project. Originally, the pic directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Freeform/Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger), was to open on Feb. 8 next year, but Sony has moved the Tom Hanks WWII drama Greyhound on to that date.
It’s an understatement to say that franchises are invaluable at the box office, and a Marvel property even more so. And in the case with a Spider-Man spinoff such as this, Sony wants to deliver the best feature possible. We hear that Silver & Black is headed back into development and that a re-write is in store. The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Silver & Black has been yanked off Sony’s calendar, and will no longer make its initial February 8th, 2019 release date.
It’s a disappointing, if unsurprising update from the studio’s fledgling Marvel Universe, which is due to flicker into life this October thanks to Ruben Fleischer’s Venom.
For Silver & Black, we know The Secret Life of Bees filmmaker Gina Prince-Bythewood is at the helm for this one, having helped penned the script alongside Lindsey Beer.
