Revenge by Torture
terrazygotes-308812 November 2021
This is a very difficult film to watch. It is not really "entertainment", as one commenter called it. It is a film for mature, concerned, "thinking" audiences, although some adolescents may also find it thought stimulating.

It deals with our horror of certain crimes and our impulse for revenge on the criminal. Does revenge gain anyone anything ? I have thought myself, that a crime, that takes away someone's loved one for the rest of their life, should have some indelible consequences, where the perpetrator should suffer some loss, to always remind him/her of the pain, that his/her transgression has caused others. The loss of a limb say or his/her hands or feet. This film has forced me to reconsider that idea. It certainly isn't a Christian idea, that raises us up. Cutting off someone's hand, because they stole some object seems barbaric to me. What if they stole a life ?

With all the corruption that manifests in society, the society/government can seem, as bad as, or worse than the criminal his/herself. We cannot allow these people to make such grave decisions. Compassion and strength must supplant anger and revenge. As for deterrence, the majority of violent crimes are impulse crimes, which will not be deterred.

An excellent and courageous film, of an idea, which needed to be examined.

The extremity of it is well balanced by the challenge not being preachy but allowed to just be there (SPOILERS)

Warning: Spoilers
A disturbing film, where an inmate undergoes a series of amputations and surgeries at the behest of the father of his young victim, while also being used as a warning to others. The film works well as a chiller because it does have this inherent darkness about it, but what I liked the most was that it is quite matter-of-fact and that it doesn't preach its message so much as let the viewer explore it.

It does this by making you not sure how you feel about any of it; it isn't that you go from one side to the other, but more that you end up on all sides and none at the same time. The idea of punishment seems fitting, but as the cruelty of it escalates, and the lack of closure it provides is clearer and clearer, it does make you question the point of any of it. The idea of punishment as a form of revenge is questioned, and it left me feeling uneasy because of what it made me wonder. Bingham certainly doesn't deserve community service for the rape and murder of a child, but then carving him up doesn't seem right either - but then if that punishment is not right, why is locking him in a box for his entire life not "right". But then how is it 'right' that the victim gets no 'justice' if we were to instead focus on rehabilitation of Bingham to get him back out into society again.

The film has all this going on in the background of its darkly cruel and haunted tale. The performances are mostly very good. Dee is convincing in his horror, while Fryer is broken down too. The Father (Ferris) is a bit too obvious in the impact of his revenge, but it worked nonetheless. The production standards are high - with the visual effects impressive in how they don't stand out for their presence. Use of music, cinematography etc all get the best from the idea and performances. A tough film, but one that benefits from not offering any answers.

Punishment in the near future.

Warning: Spoilers
Remarkable acting, enticing the viewer to really contemplate their thoughts about government, punishment, and the future. Amazing Computer Generated Imagery lopping off body parts with as much precision as a micro surgeon. Credit to the director, Matthew Richards and his professional team of cast and crew. Thought provoking entertainment that will resonate with anyone who has contemplated the pros and cons of physical punishment and its possible role in deterring would be criminals as well as the governments role in stretching the boundaries to the extremes. A look at one scenario when the victims family takes the Eye for an Eye scenario to its extreme.

I'm incredibly late to this, but here's my review.

Warning: Spoilers
Willie Bingham is a man convicted of the murder of a young girl. His sentence? To endure multiple surgical amputations at the behest of the victim's relatives.

One thing (out of the many things) this film does well is that it shows how vengeance doesn't heal a wound. The father of the victim who made Willie go through all of these amputations quickly deteriorates in mental and physical health. He has an addiction to causing Willie pain, hoping that it somehow heals his own, which it doesn't.

Besides this message, it is cinematic genius. It is incredibly well written and filmed. The emotions felt by the actors effect you in such a way that is almost impossible to find nowadays. It is a very powerful story. Watch this if you haven't.

Beyond the Pale

While I thought this was interesting, I would hope that our society would never come to this. First of all, I would imagine the majority of the people would approve of this punishment. That's pretty unsettling in itself. But watching the father over and over enjoying the dismembering of Willie, literally getting his pound of flesh, makes me wonder what the world has become. Recent events in our country make me believe that there are huge numbers of people who would have no problem acting in this way.

it reminds...

...a Kafka short story. Not only for plot but for atmosphere. All is precise and useful for the wise manner to explore a subject far to be new. From the noble cause of humanity becoming cruel at whole to the hypocritic lessons to students about sins. A film like a smart reflection in mirror of human race. With its fundamental mistakes and low sensibility and lies as truth.
