Five international-themed films are competing for Best Documentary Feature at the Academy Awards this year, stories set in Uganda, Chile, Tunisia, Ukraine, and India. To Kill a Tiger, which has brought director Nisha Pahuja the first Oscar nomination of her career, centers on a poor couple in the Indian state Jharkhand who bravely fought for justice after their teenage daughter became the victim of a brutal sexual assault.
“It literally is this David and Goliath story,” Pahuja said as she appeared at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees. “We were surprised, I think, by their courage and their resilience, and we kept thinking at some point maybe they were going to cave.”
Ranjit, father of 13-year-old Kiran, faced intense pressure to drop charges against the three young men accused of attacking his daughter.

Set in the near-future, the subversion of the David and Goliath myth follows the inhabitants of a pig-breeding community next to a lake containing an island inhabited by a giant who according to legend ate the early settlers’ babies.

Director Dan Trachtenberg described his Predator movie, Prey, as a “David and Goliath story” in a recent featurette. It’s an apt description, and not solely because it refers to the first Predator hunt on Earth, 300 years ago. It’s also because the Predator itself is a bit of a giant.
Actor Dane Diliegro towers over Prey star Amber Midthunder at 6’9″. And that’s before you factor in the fully mechanized Predator head that sits atop Diliegro’s own head.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the actor to discuss what it was like to play the much more feral iteration of the iconic horror character, the extensive training it required, and more.
For starters, how did Diliegro find his way into the role?

Actor Thomas Sadoski has joined Patricia Clarkson in an upcoming film about the life of pay equity activist Lilly Ledbetter.
Sadoski, of HBO’s “The Newsroom,” has booked the key role of Jon Goldfarb — the civil rights attorney who backed Ledbetter all the way to the Supreme Court in her compensation battle. In 2009, President Barack Obama named a piece of legislation for her.
A David vs. Goliath tale, the film will follow the aggrieved Alabama wife and mother who railed against being paid 40% less than her male factory worker counterparts over a 20-year period. Beginning production this August, it aims to show one woman’s fight for justice while also painting a heartbreaking personal story about the tension-filled stakes behind her political achievements.
Goldfarb was by Ledbetter’s side from her first trip to Washington D.C., to her audience with the country’s highest court, to Obama’s signing...

For the first time since 2001, “Survivor” is not airing as a part of CBS’s fall schedule. The culprit? You guessed it: Covid-19. The network had initially hoped to film the 41st season of its hit reality TV show during the early summer and air it in September, but due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, those plans were scrapped. Instead, “The Amazing Race” Season 32 will inherit the show’s Wednesday-at-8pm slot beginning October 14.
Understandably, “Survivor” fans have been going through withdrawals — but it’s particularly tough right now as the new season typically begins airing in the final week of September. “Island of the Idols” (Season 39) debuted Sept. 25, 2019, “David vs. Goliath” (Season 37) dropped Sept. 26, 2018, “Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers” (Season 35) began Sept. 27, 2017, etc. In other words, Season 41 should be airing this week.

They often wear glasses. Their brain power generally compensates for any lack of brawn. They can be quite handy when it comes to strategizing and puzzle solving. And humor can be their secret weapon. Let’s hear it for the “Survivor” nerds and give them some love. There were two prime examples of this species on the recent “David vs. Goliath” season: Christian Hubicki, a bespectacled robotics scientist from Florida, and his female counterpart Gabby Pascuzzi, a bookish Colorado-based technical writer. These two number among the 18 nerdiest “Survivor” players ever, ranked from worst to best.

Calm, cool and collected is how fans of “Survivor” would describe Yul Kwon, winner of “Cook Islands” (Season 13) and current front-runner to triumph on “Winners at War” (Season 40). Even though this 44-year-old New Yorker has been away from the “Survivor” community for over a decade (a storyline that dominated Wednesday’s two-hour season premiere), he’s still currently leading Gold Derby’s odds for who will win the $2 million check.
See‘Survivor 40’ advantages: Tracking who has immunity idols, fire tokens in ‘Winners at War’
Yul currently tops our winner’s chart with 5/1 odds, followed by his “Cook Islands” buddy Parvati Shallow (“Micronesia”) in the runner-up position at 6/1 odds. Yul and Parvati have yet to sync up since they’re starting the game on opposite tribes. Cancer survivor Ethan Zohn (“Africa”) then comes in third place at 7/1 odds. Gold Derby’s racetrack odds are based on the predictions of everyday readers like you.

When I arrived for Sunday services at the Hundred Harmonies Church near Los Angeles, on a chilly morning last November, I was immediately handed a joint, a lighter and a bottle of water. In a small exurban storefront guarded by a security guard holding an Ar-15, about 15 parishioners were toking up, eating powdered donuts and watching the final scenes of Orson Wells’ 1960 film David and Goliath on a mounted flat-screen. A whiteboard listed the day’s agenda (“Samuel 17”) above the message “God ♥s you!”. The Rev. James Young Phan, an...
