Magic Violin and All

This was an era when an all-girl orchestra was still something of a novelty act, although one band, the Ingenues, had been the subject of a Vitaphone short a decade earlier; that short subject was THE BAND BEAUTIFUL. This is a fine musical short, in which a swing Hungarian Rhapsody is cheek by jowl with the Tiger Rag, with plenty of virtuosos. I suspect in that period, if you were a very talented male musician, there were any of a dozen bands or orchestras who would hire you. If you were a woman who wanted to play the trombone, you could either see if Mr. Spitalny had a place for you or learn to play the harp.

It's a competent handled short, although someone is fond of three-shots, whether it's three young ladies or three shiny trumpets. The print I saw looked nice, but there was something wrong with the music track .... the sound went fuzzy when the deeper notes got loud. Still, there was enough to make this one a fine musical short.
