How to Build a Rat Costume

Deadly Eyes: An Interview with Allan Apone (2014)

*** (out of 4)

A lot of great information is given here by special effects artist Allan Apone who discusses his work on the Canadian cult film DEADLY EYES. If you're not familiar with that movie, it's basically a killer rat movie but the budget was so low that they put dogs in rat costumes. Apone goes into great detail about all the work that had to be done in order to get the dogs into the costumes and to make sure everything went off without a hitch. The subway sequence is one that gets a lot of talk here but Apone really gives you a great idea of what it was like trying to do this type of film. There's also a funny story told about how some of the dogs began to get smart on how not to get into their costumes. Another funny story deals with them forgetting to put a way for the dogs to go to the bathroom in the costumes so they had to put diapers in them. Overall this is a fun little interview with plenty of great trivia for the film.
