I Love 1995
Prismark1018 February 2020
Presented by Edwyn Collins with a little help from Jackie Valencio. Collins became known in the 1980s with the Scottish band Orange Juice, when the hits dried up, he went solo and totally ripped it up with the worldwide smash A Girl Like You. Even I bought the song.

Sadly Collins suffered two serious cerebral hemorrhages in 2005 and his recovery was prolonged.

1995 was a year when Bripop hit the stratosphere. Emerging bands had singers who went for the androgynous look such as Jarvis Cocker, who to be honest always looked like a bloke to me. Just a very thin one.

What else would they need to smell nice but CK One, the unisex cologne aimed at both men and women. The main ingredient turned out to be tea. It flew out of the shelves.

Emerging from Canada with her brand of angry rock was Alanis Morissette. Her grunge album Jagged Little Pill sold millions and ensured she had a female following who had no interest in girl bands.

However, Alanis Morissette's definition of ironic was a bit off. There was nothing ironic about it. At least she took the joke in good grace. I saw her on television a few years ago and was shocked by her appearance. She looked like a soccer mom.

In the cinema came Braveheart. Mel Gibson had enough of Mad Max, he played William Wallace, a Scottish rebel who was mad at the English king. Mel cleaned up at the Oscars with Best Picture and Best Director. Lots of Scotsmen went around with blue paint in their faces, either that or it's a side effect from drinking too much Bols Blue liqueur.

Paul Kaye has become a respectable actor that is equally at home in comedy and dramas such as Game of Thrones. He first emerged as the spoof BBC Interviewer Dennis Pennis who would terrorise celebrities at premieres and showbiz parties by asking them inane questions or confuse them with terrible puns. It required balls of steel and Pennis had both of them. It was funny and at the same time cringeworthy. Rumour had it that Kevin Costner hired a bodyguard just to keep Pennis away from him.

That was 1995, but there was no mention of the Oklahoma City bombing.
