Destination Death - An interview with Producer Daniel Grodnik (2012)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Producer Daniel Grodnik is interviewed in this 12-minute featurette that can be found on the Shout Factory! release of TERROR TRAIN. The producer openly talks about a variety of subjects including why it was important to shoot in Canada since they could offer tax breaks and also why it was so important to get Jamie Lee Curtis in the picture. Other subjects include the hiring of David Copperfield and there's also talk about the movie being sold to Fox who went out and spent way too much money to advertise the film when it was going to have a limited appeal anyways. Fans of TERROR TRAIN will certainly enjoy hearing all of the behind-the-scenes stories and I thought Grodnik was extremely honest and open about the film. He objects people calling the movie a classic and freely admits that it's just HALLOWEEN on a train and he even discusses how the movie really didn't stand apart from what other slashers were doing at the time. It's good to see someone being honest about a film.

Warning: Spoilers
Producer Daniel Grodnik candidly talks about the making of the horror slasher cult favorite "Terror Train." Grodnik starts out by saying that he always wanted to be a producer before noting that the first two films he produced were "Starhops" and "Without Warning." Grodnik reveals that he got the idea for "Terror Train" after he saw both "Silver Streak" and "Halloween" as well as points out the original title was "Terrible Train" and that the killer was a psycho who escaped from an asylum in an earlier draft of the script. Moreover, Grodnick not only talks about making the movie under a Canadian tax shelter deal, but also discusses hiring Roger Spotiswoode to direct and casting Jamie Lee Curtis in the lead because she was a huge name in the horror genre at the time. Grodnik also says that David Copperfield's role as a magician was written into the script and states that he was surprised when 20th Century Fox spent so much money promoting the picture after they picked it up for theatrical distribution. Grodnik closes the interview by admitting that he just considers "Terror Train" to be a standard slice'n'dice item that's just basically "Halloween" on a train. Worth a watch for fans of the film.
