inter-twined lives in Los Angeles
ksf-29 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS...This starts a little confusing... who is sleeping with whom again ?? Someone is getting transferred, someone else isn't going where they wanted to go. Not sure just what everyone is doing. and then a couple of ex-es hook up. and one of them is gay. or bisexual. or something. The timing here is just strange, at least in the first half; the script needs tightening, and people blow up out of the blue. lots of drug use. and explicit fetish play. pretty rough stuff. Not at all for the under 18 crowd. I confess I almost turned it off about halfway through. I was worried something sad (and un-necessary) was going to happen... but it didn't and I stuck it out until the end. The basic stories are good, but they really could have left out the extreme, almost sensationalist sex part. It seemed a bit too gratuitous. Also too many issues going on here... right at the end, we throw in the "Got thrown out of my house when I came out" story. Not sure what that had to do with the dude getting transferred. It sounded like they had only been dating for a while. What's the big deal? LA isn't that far from San Diego. They could still have continued the relationship if they both wanted to. I won't give away any specific spoilers... just that some tales end on an up note, and some don't. Written and directed by JC Falcon. Some weak points, but okay overall, if you hang in until the end.

With Almodovar's Carmen Maura in special cameo
sugarfreepeppermint5 November 2016
Although the synopsis describes this film as being about a gay man's best girlfriend getting pregnant with his baby, the main plot actually revolves around a lurid and obsessive relationship with a handsome stranger online. This film runs at an easy pace, and although definitely mostly centered around the main protagonist (who's very easy on the eyes, which helps) it also gives sufficient scope to the events happening to the friends around him. All their stories are nicely tied in.

Although she doesn't appear on the list of actors on this film's IMDb page, the famous Spanish actress, Carmen Maura, makes a cameo in it. She is particularly known to an international audience for her roles in Pedro Almodovar movies. She definitely adds something very special.

Of Two Minds About This Film
ricardo_edm30 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of those films that I've replayed in my mind and I keep going from "I like it" to "I don't like it." The acting was good, the editing was good, the script was okay, but I just didn't like the subject matter of the baby. I've always had a dislike for films that portray gay men as "suddenly bi" after years of being gay. Moreover, I have a problem with the relationship being between two very good friends (male/female) maybe because in my whole life I have never come across one of these situations in real life or even heard of one. Moreover, I don't like the cheating aspect of the relationship. So, as a movie it is not bad but the script was something I didn't quite like but as we all know, that' something very subjective

A real movie about real life
eduardiaz23 January 2017
I don't think this is "another gay movie". What happens in this story might happen to any of us, no matter who you are or who you sleep with. It's all about lies, trust, loneliness, fears and love.... That's life... real life ... Hard and sad or happy life...

In my opinion, the characters in the film faithfully reflect a group of friends with their virtues and flaws. They are kind, affectionate, selfish, immature characters ... real as life itself.

Anyone over 30 will be reflected in many situations and if you have not done so, you are about to do so.

If this movie does not excite you ... is that nothing will ....

friends

It has the virtue to be one of films delighting a part of public for honest perspective about life, dilemmas, relations, loneliness, frustrations, all so familiar in near reality daily life. You recognize situations and crisis and gestures . And this can be a good thing about film.

It is easy to recognize a good fist of cliches . Or not very happy about no revelations, courageous solutions or real provocative options. So, easy to define it as boring.

But it is only a film about friendship . No ambitions of brave demonstrations, often bitter taste of not far by you situations, warm and , yes, a film in which older teens are just present.

Maybe not exactly a slice of lif but a faithful reflection of it.

Far Fetched and Sketchy But Not Awful
myronlearn30 August 2023
'People You May Know' (PYMK) was too long, not particularly well written, the characters sketchy and far fetched scenarios abound. It centers around a group of LaLa Land denizens, some with questionable morals and ethics. Joe, one of the main characters and gay, is 'heterosexualized' one evening, sleeping with the wife of one of his best friends, the result of excessive alcohol on both sides. Their lives are forever changed as a result, for the better and for the worse in terms of her marriage. Joe is lonely and single and trolls the internet while looking for inspiration to write the great novel. He discovers he's being catfished online by an imposter who he had fallen in love with before finding out the truth. A far fetched meeting with the real person who's being impersonated occurs at a local bar one evening.

This entire catfishing experience becomes the inspiration he needs to tell his internet story. His writer's block is finally lifted. One of the other characters falls in love for the first time, then receives a job promotion forcing him to relocate. This regrettably derails his relationship, sadly. All I'll say is another far fetched situation happens here at the end.

The writing could have been tighter, the film shorter, and the acting and directing improved. But in the end, PYMK is well intentioned and even somewhat entertaining at times.

a movie about life...a very boring version of life
Coralknight13 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
There was a time when Gay-themed movies usually got a "pass" to a certain extent, meaning there weren't many out there, so they were "graded on a curve". However, there ARE many quality gay-themed films at this point in cinematic history, so we can start being honest in the hopes that this genre can (and will) improve. To start, the script for "People you may know" seems to be written specifically for these actors, as if they were all friends to begin with...because they simply are not that compelling or interesting. A gay guy getting drunk and having sex with a woman and getting her pregnant? Only been done a million times (best one was "the Wedding Banquet"...and THAT was a GREAT gay-themed movie!) so this was just too painfully cliché to watch. The sappy, contrived "story-book romance" between Nicholas and Herbert almost seemed out of place, as the dialogue and conclusion just seemed to "wacky" for the suspension of belief ("hey everybody! I just got another job too in the same town and now I want to get married!"). Please. While Mark Cirillo graciously left his clothes ON this time (maybe he got the hint), unfortunately for the viewer someone thought it would be a good idea to show Sean Maher's flabby/hairy buttocks repeatedly and gratuitously. No. The worst aspect of this film is that it is mostly JUST TALKING...either over the phone, over the computer over a table etc...and it is BORING. So, maybe watch this movie if you want a "starter" gay-themed movie because you've never seen Will and Grace or anything remotely relevant to modern gay culture. If not, it's not going to bring anything new to the table.

Please stop forcing drama into this movie
n-redini2 March 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A useless movie which tries its best to put as much drama as possible in a story which could even have been interesting. The only plot twist the movie has is not even explored completely as one, after more than one hour, would rightfully deserve.

And the soundtrack... oh my god the soundtrack: So sad. in every. single. moment.

People you may know is a bittersweet piece of real life.
eduardo_rivas-8042430 January 2017
A must see! It's true that it is sweet and funny but also very real and tough. It shows us how loneliness can lead us to make terrible mistakes.

I don't think that this film is full of clichés, on the contrary, it shows us the way things could happen in our nowadays, giving us the opportunity of thinking about the problems we could find in a society more complex and connected than ever.

At the same time, I enjoyed the sense of humor of some of the characters and the way they live their friendship. This friendship could be closer to a extended family concept.

A great movie about friends
ComedyFan20105 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I really loved that movie. It has such a nice and warm atmosphere. It is not over the top original but it makes me enjoy following the story line.

I actually didn't expect that the guy Joe had an online relationship with will turn out to be fake. I was actually expecting after that that we will get to see who he is. But we didn't which is actually good, it shows that since he was always fake he actually doesn't exist. I was also a bit worried that they will make this person be one of his friends, glad they didn't go down this road because I loved the warm friendships in this movie.

Great acting too. I liked everyone, they were all very natural in their roles and made me believe that this is who they are.

I am not gay. So I wasn't watching looking for gay cliches or to learn about "gay culture". I just watched it as a friendship and love story and it ended up being great.

just another tired old gay movie full of tired old gay clichés
jm107016 November 2016
From other reviews online, I'd gotten the impression that this might not be just another stale gay dramedy full of stale gay dramedy clichés... but five minutes in, one lead coyly asks the other, "When's the last time you got laid? 'cause you're really tense right now!" I hit eject, put the DVD back in its case, and tossed it in the box with tired old gay movies from the horrible old days when that's all we had.

With people like Alan Brown, Mark Thiedeman and Joseph Graham making intelligent, NON-clichéd gay movies -- about and for adults, not bitchy, mentally challenged, self-obsessed, cocaine-snorting, thirtysomething (or older) adolescents -- there's no excuse to keep recycling the same old garbage. Besides, one minute earlier the same character had said, "... or something equally as stupid." The writer gets old clichés just right, but writing plain English correctly evidently is beyond him. I almost ejected it then, but when the "got laid" line came fast on its heels, and in the same smug, whiny voice, it sealed this movie's fate for me.

Well-written realistic script
tr-8349510 August 2019
Well written, realistic view of the modern gay male experience, featuring the almost always present hetero-female friends. Some "straight" men do not want to understand or take responsibility for the actions, and that is perfectly normal, too. The actors excel in their roles and the film moves along at a good pace. Kudos for a very well made movie.

Unpretentious and militant film, beautiful and pleasant...
RosanaBotafogo15 February 2021
It reminded me of Madonna's classic, "Sobrou Pra Você", with due proportions, of course, because here the humor and drama fell far short, but we delighted in a light, unpretentious and militant film, beautiful and pleasant ... Charismatic characters, script simple, yet functional and attractive ...
