This has a target audience.
just_in_case2 January 2020
I think some movies are always going to be affected by the lens you watch them under. I'm a massive fan of a horror movie called "The Collector". About a jewel thief who breaks into a house only to be forced to battle a serial killer who's created elaborate traps to torture the family who was supposed to be on vacation. The movie has an amazing soundtrack, great writing and cinematography, but at the end of the day it's a gory horror, difficult appreciate for anyone excepting film makers and horror fans.

MFKZ is stuck in a similar position. Its a scifi neo jpop gangsta animation that both embraces thug culture aesthetic while at the same time pointing out how miserable it is and being an epileptic seizure inducing animated scifi comedy superhero film.

Whos the audience for that? Well I guess I am. I loved the refusal to adhere to a consistent animation technique. I loved the style and I cheered at the shoot outs.

I think its awesome in the same way "Into the spider-verse" is awesome. Its action filled, kinetic and as an artist, inspiring. If I had a complaint Id say some of it is a bit been there done that, as far as the story goes. If youve seen anything like Kill-La-Kill youve seen this before. Still, I personally loved it.

Dope
markchrisandjr5 January 2020
If you like GTA San Andreas, you'll like this movie. If you liked Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you'll like this movie. If you like over the top gun sound effects, you'll like this movie. If you like stories that continuously change while the movie is happening, you'll like this movie. Just sit down and watch it. It's fun, crazy, weird and hilarious. I even had to loop a few scenes just to absorb each moment of the action.

Describe this in one word... Dope.

Crazy, wacky, and great!
dylanworkowski18 April 2019
This movie really shows you can throw a bunch of ideas out there and make a movie. It's crazy but it flows and makes sense of course it's not the best animation out there but it is something that entertains you. It doesn't have some big hidden meaning behind it that I can see but I liked how the animation flowed well and the creativity put into this was something out of a dream. Soundtrack is perfect for the scenes they use music and there are a couple Easter eggs like the Men in black MIB on the license plates of the government people. Overall fun movie I would most definitely watch again!

Convoluted but fun

Warning: Spoilers
Mutafukas is a movie I went into knowing almost nothing about, and I didn't know exactly what to expect. As I watched it, I was having a difficult time understanding what the entire storyline was trying to play because the filmmakers were mushing so many different things together, but since the voice acting was energetically performed, the action so explosive and intense, the characters/narrative so off the wall, and the ideas so crazy, it was very difficult not to enjoy MFKZ 😂 After the credits, it felt like something really funny but fairly forgettable, but after an hour or two, I craved to watch it again 😂😂😂 The movie ends on a cliffhanger, so fingers crossed for a sequel! In closing, I recommend this film if you love crazy Animes and if you're infatuated with street culture and just pop culture in general.

Watchable nonsense
flowirin21 April 2019
What more is there to say. There's a small environmental message wrapped up in an origin reveal and a violent action piece.

Full of tropes and stereotypes, but kinda enjoyable to half watch while you are cruising the internet for more satisfying input

Fun from the first minute!

Warning: Spoilers
This movie was incredibly animated. Dynamic camera angles, incredible color palate, the works. The action scenes were brutal and bloody, but also didn't sacrifice the reality of the universe of the film. The only star i didn't give was because of the love story. I feel like that part was a little forced in the ending scenes and it would have been better if the movie ended on a different note.

I saw the movie poster and was immediately interested. I thought this might really suck and was completely blown away. Great action great script and some great voice actors and actresses. I would actually watch that again. And I hope we get a second one based on the ending.

Underrated af!

I can't express enough how super underrated this movie is. I watched this movie over the summer for fun and I LOVED it! It's currently my favorite movie at the moment and I'm obsessed with it. The characters are amazing, the story is super crazy and fun to watch, the animation is so pretty and gorgeous to look it, and the soundtrack was perfectly placed and makes the film great.

Smooth west coast fun...but flawed too
missamatullah30 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As a person that keeps up with Gkids new releases, I was excited to see this movie, it looked like a sleek gta movie, which for the most part it is. Let me break it down a bit

Characters: The main character Leon is a little bland but he gets the job done, Vinz voices by rapper Vince staples does a good job of being a likable cool best friend.......and the characters kinda end there, the girl is just....there, she's really just there to be the savior angel at the end. The villains? I really couldn't care about them, the main villain with the golden gun is fine. I'm not really gonna talk about Willy because he was just comic relief

Art: French art and animation proves to be unique and sleek, it's fun and engaging to watch

Music: a mixture of west coast hip hop and dubstep keeps the energy up

Story: Now, as much I like the fun bits of this movie, the story? We start off solid, you want to know more about the world, but man does it dip in quality sometimes. The fun chase scenes or fighting scenes are great, the moments of banter between Leon and Vinz, cool. But it has moments like the introduction of the wrestlers, that are skippable. I had a lot of fun with the first half, but I actually turned the movie off during the second half because it got too serious and fake deep for its own good. I did come back and just skip until Vinz and Leon were back to doing their thing. There's really nothing too special here with the story and some plot points feel unneeded. But if you just watch the fun parts of the movie then it's a nice watch

Verdict: it's always nice to see fluid 2d animation so I'm a little more lenient with this movie. The story isn't the best, it really drags at times. But! The fast paced gta like moments is what keeps this movie from bombing. I would recommend that when you watch this movie, to skip the wrestler intro and when Leon is at the secret organization.

Very beautiful to look at, but not much else.
masoncheek24 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first half of the movie had me, but the second half and the other plotlines just dragged it down. The luchadores and Luna, the most underdeveloped character in any movie ever, just made it not that good. It couldn't decide if it wanted to be a hood, sci fi, or evil corporation movie and decided to cram 15 hours worth of story into 1 hour and 30 minutes of movie. I recommend if you like good animation, but the story sucked big time.

Sub culture at its best. Fun & action from the first minute. Extraordinary visual in different styles, very creative. I can not understand mediocre reviews from mainstream media (old men?)

That's a "high" 7
johnnythreeper25 June 2020
A highlight video popped up on YouTube and I had just smoked. My interest was peaked and I found the full movie on Netflix. I was not disappointed, but was left a little wanting.

The art style is super dope. Really loved it. Definitely some nods to the ground breaking animes from the 90s. A shot remake i noticed was when the cell door crushed the guard. Definitely an homage to Akira.

I do wish that we got some more back story. This is definitely a character driven story, but we don't learn much about the others. That's honestly my only gripe with the film and why it's a 7 and not a 9.

If you like different, you'll like this. In my opinion, it's a fresh take in a time when everything is pulled from the idea rolladex.

Awesome art and music, really basic story
benjyboom10 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Really cool soundtrack and action (ice cream truck scene), both of which were elevated by the quality art. Everything looked really nice, from the colorful main city area, to the hood, and even the monochrome moon base had grown on me by the end of the scene. I cant extend praise to the story, however, which is riddled with cliches: chosen one, annoying cowardly friend, love interest with no character beyond "she's attractive". Certain scenes certainly were fun, but the story overall was way too weak compared to the sound and visuals.

Writing love letters to a girl with no address
nogodnomasters1 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Adult Cartoon. Possible spoilers.

Lino lives in DMC (Dark Meat City) New California. He shares a place with Vinz who has a flame on top of his head. After a head-on collision with a truck, Lino becomes Roddy Piper in "They Live" and has the ability to make out aliens among us.

The aliens are after Lino who has developed some skills. He also has something that resembles the WWE on his side as well as his legion of pet cockroaches. BTW Global Warming is caused by aliens who want to terraform the planet for their liking and kill off mankind.

Different.

Guide: F-word. Brief nudity.

Fast paced and forced action
jtpruz1 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Arstyle - Gave me serious tekkonkinkreet vibes and brought me back to when I first saw it. Each environment gave you a certain indescribable feeling and you could feel the effort that went into it as well as the characters.

Characters - Supported each other really well and had their own fleshed out personalities. Loved the unique designs and the fact that they acknowledged little things about themselves. It fit their environment really well.

Plot - Now this is where it goes downhill. Plot is kinda generic with the whole main character has special powers and must be captured. All the action scenes felt like I was lightly being punched in the arm, they didn't hit like I hoped they would. His inner potential came out for a split second and caught my interest but not by much.

Soundtrack - My taste has nothing to do with this but this music didn't fit at all. It felt like it was for a different movie. I was honestly expecting something similar to "Into the Spider-verse" because of the characters and the environment but we got dubstep instead. Not hugely disappointing just a really strange choice in my opinion.

At a certain point when everything shifts to being on the run, it feels like it rushed. I would've liked a slower build up and maybe more time spent on developing the characters/villains.

I get what they were trying to do with the main character at the end but I wished they would've given more power to him to close the movie. He just gets into a fight and some other minor characters we barely saw saved the day. I get the message I just felt like it wasn't enough. All of it kind of felt like a short story poorly stretched out to 1 hour and 34 minutes.

While I loved Tekkonkinkreet, I'll admit it wasn't perfect either. The style, characters, and environments are all phenomenal but it suffers the same issues with the scattered plot. It almost feels as if the movie is lost and doesn't know where it's going.

Interesting, unique, and original
zachsextra20 March 2020
Honestly a quality animation. The art style, characters, and story are all enjoyable and original. Although it leaves some questions unanswered it was an all-around fun experience. I don't really understand the complaints of some of the reviews. Nothing in the movie felt forced. Sure, a little more exposition would've been nice, but I don't think it was necessary for the story. It was meant to be relatively short and able to stand on it's own for what it is. It wasn't supposed to be an epic masterpiece with an extensive history and a fantastical world full of surprises. The movie does what it sets out to do, and I enjoyed the ride. It didn't have me busting a gut with laughter or crying from emotion, but it was a fun and unique piece of art that I enjoyed. Certainly a lot better than some recent major production films.

To many F-Bombs

I thought this was a great movie. Very creative. Now I curse. I actually curse a lot and this movie showed me how stupid I look when doing so. I would have given the movie 8-10 if it wasn't for all the F-bombs.

Interesting Art, Cheap Story
vocaloidmau13 May 2019
Watched it because I thought the art was cool, but that's pretty much it. Story is weird at times, a bit is still unexplained, and I feel that the movie inserted a little not so subtle politics as well as a... Conspiracy theory, I guess?

Art is stellar. Decent action. Plot leaves a lot to be desired.

Better than I thought.
kegebler28 February 2021
This movie does start off a little Bland but the animations pretty spot-on the American voice overs are not bad. It gets better as it goes on. The plot pending on how much you pay attention can actually be very good with some underlining subjects.

Glossy Garbage
naviaques27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The only piece of smooth animation in this whole film is an unnamed woman playing with her breasts. For it's 93 minute runtime the film throws fistfuls of anime tropes, racial stereotypes, and plot holes bigger than the main characters eyes. The random titles that pop up throughout the film are jarring and the majority of the characters go unnamed. The film makes many attempts to speak on societal issues and global politics but can't even manage character development. The author of the original comic has no experience with what he is attempting to portray and it shows.

Plot Holes Include: What ever happened to Lino's father? The man in the white suit is human apparently but has black eyes, never addressed. Why did he take off his bullet proof vest to fight a small enemy with no gun in known gang territory? The female love interest has 5 scenes and the majority of them she never speaks or is just a flashback, yet we're supposed to believe they had a connection. The world is supposed to be human, so why is there a talking cat and a skeleton? The enemy is defeated by snow but can survive in the vacuum of space. Who put braces on a cat? The Shakespearean gangster wasn't just shot in the eye, the back of his head was blown out. The whole side plot with the MIB agent Lino never confronts his nature, just gives up.

I guess I should have expected such a lack luster main character to end up back in the exact same position as when the film opened; in a tarnished apartment with only cockroaches to comfort him.

Incredible, but underwhelming as well
automaticgunspit20 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
(More of a rant than review)

When I saw the trailer for MFKZ in 2019, the animation was what attracted me, as well as the story (though a bit cliche) of a dude having powers and being chased by bad guys, accompanied by his friend who (for some reason) has a flaming head. The movie was a coaster ride from the beginning to the end. The action was high octane and fast paced, but could still be followed, and Angelino and Vinz's character growth was also admirable. The problem I have with MFKZ, however, is that this rollercoaster was going so fast, I could barely look around and see what was happening. I still don't understand the whole Macho race plotline, nor do the good Macho men explain why the bad Macho man went AWOL. When Lino and Vinz leave the Macho men's hideout, they do it for literally no good reason. The Macho men saved them, and it even looked like Vinz was getting along fine while Lino was out, so why did they feel the need to run away? When it's discovered they're gone, the Macho men don't even blink, and go back to building the rocket. If they didn't care about him being there, why save him at all??? That's maybe the only plotline in the movie that doesn't make sense. Next, it's about how weak the protagonist is, despite having powers. I mean, 80% of the movie is either someone shooting, being shot at, or about to be shot at, but NONE of it is Lino or Vinz. They're kinda always being shot at, or about to get shot at. They fight back maybe twice in the movie, and the rest they're running. Lino never learns how to use his powers, which, you know, people with powers should do, and the story never puts him in a situation where he has to. Instead, it has random gang members come out of nowhere to fight the battle for Lino. I expected the movie to end on a high note where Lino faces off against white suit man and uses his powers to defeat him, but I guess the moral of the story is you don't need powers, just be yourself? Idk man. He doesn't even win this battle, the gang kills the bad guy. So to summarize, the main character has powers he never uses unless he loses control, never has to use, and never wants to. We just gonna ignore how he ran down the wall in the beginning? This is a huge gripe with me because how can the man have powers and not even have the tiniest desire to explore them? Wasn't his wish to "be someone"? Now that his powers make him someone, he doesn't want to use them to save Vinz or fight the bad guy? I really hope in the sequel (which I hope there'll be) he learns how to tame the tentacle beast or whatever inside of him.

In conclusion, I love this movie, but Lino and Vinz are just not courageous at all, and Lino doesn't do anything with his powers. Absolutely nothing. Why do they exist? I dunno, you ask the creators, please, because Lino apparently doesn't want them or need them. Thank you for reading this rant, if you read the whole thing.

"a-grown-up review" Good animation, but........
charles-boecher29 December 2022
Japanese animation in this super intricate style is the best of the best entertainment, aside from a few of my person style preferences.

The term, "wretched" is used by the bad guy in part of the film. I think that's my problem and explanation for my review. I lived in Los Angeles ,in the middle of Los Angeles, it is frequently "wretched" unless you're wealthy. Although this is an exaggeration by the Japanese producers, as an American I want you to think if you're OK with this depiction? Maybe we need to see this? But... if you watch this movie, I'd ask you have you seen how the Japanese treat each other, treat their own belongings, and towns and cities? We need to take seeing this well made animation as an opportunity to get better, and be better than others see us, particularly if your A native Angelino, a transplant there, or anyone in California...... unless your life aspirations are to live in a cardboard box, surrounded by roaches on the streets of some city in California!
