Looking Back at Sleepaway Camp

A Tale of Two Sequels Part 1 (2015)

*** (out of 4)

Director Michael A. Simpson, art director Frank Galline, special effects man Splat Johnson, editor John David Allen, cinematographer Bill Mills, fan Jeff Hayes and actress Amy Fields are all interviewed for this 28-minute featurette that takes a look at the making of SLEEPAWAY CAMP 2. Overall this is a pretty good featurette but at the same time there's no denying that it's rather disappointing that none of the major cast members were interviewed. I'm sure Shout Factory! tried to get them to be interviewed but for whatever reasons they're not here and there's no question that it's disappointing because a major aspect of the film is missing. With that said, what's here is still pretty good as fans will certainly get a good idea of how the film got made and what it was like on the set. We start off hearing about how the original idea for a sequel was too dark and how it ended up being what it is. From here we hear from the director who talks about what he wanted to do for the picture and he also discusses casting Pamela Springsteen. Fans of the film are certainly going to be happy getting to hear these stories and there's also some behind-the-scenes footage that is shown. The most interesting stuff deals with the crew having to work on such a low-budget and then go directly into the sequel.
