Kit Harington and Scoot McNairy play old friends who reunite under dangerous circumstances in the first trailer for crime thriller Blood for Dust.
The Avenue is set to release director Rod Blackhurst’s feature in select theaters and on digital platforms April 19 following its premiere at last year’s Tribeca Festival. Josh Lucas and Stephen Dorff also star in Blood for Dust, which tells the story of Cliff (McNairy), a traveling salesman with financial issues who becomes enveloped in the world of drug trafficking after reuniting with Ricky (Harington).
“I don’t sell products that sell themselves,” Harington says in the trailer. This leads McNairy to respond, “You’re an arms dealer who sells drugs, Ricky.”
Blackhurst (Here Alone) helmed the film from a script by David Ebeltoft. Ryan Winterstern, Bernard Kira, Petr Jákl, Ari Novak, Arun Kumar, Bobby Campbell, Nathan Klingher, Mark Fasano and Noah Lang serve as producers.

While Netflix continues to add a lot of great content, including some new original series for the summer, the platform is also going to be losing parts of its library. In particular, July will see The Matrix trilogy depart the service for the newly launched HBO Max, with some other Warner Bros. movies also making their way over to the fledgling subscription rival. What titles, then, are no longer going to be available on Netflix come July?
Well, among the films that are leaving next month, notable pics include Cloverfield, The Curse of Benjamin Button and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as the majority of the Tremors franchise. Another big Warner Bros. title, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, will also be removed, part of what’s becoming a mass transfer of content over to HBO Max as the rival looks to compete with Netflix on its back-catalogue of movies. Other high-profile losses include Ghost Rider,...

Exclusive: Witchcraft Motion Picture Company is adding to its growing slate of films since launching last year. Rod Blackhurst (director of Netflix’s Amanda Knox)and Noah Lang of Witchcraft have acquired the rights to the thriller Empire of Dirt written by Noah Harald.
Blackhurst is attached to direct Harald’s script which follows “a female ex-soldier turned Emt who, certain of her son’s innocence in the wake of his overdose death, ventures deep into the underbelly of opioid country in relentless pursuit of truth and vengeance.”
“This is a film about motherhood, pain and strength set against the backdrop of a city ravaged by a drug epidemic where justice seemingly only comes at a premium,’’ said Blackhurst and Lang in a statement. “Noah Harald’s script about a middle aged woman of...

The game was first published in 2016 and has been made available on platforms including PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Microsoft Windows, Android and iOS. It sold more than 400,000 copies in Japan and overseas, and is also available on Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Chicago – The story of “Little Women,” by Louisa May Alcott, has been an American institution since its publication in 1869. The story of four girls-to-little-women during the American Civil War, with their indomitable mother holding down the household while their father is away in the war, was a perfect candidate to become a Broadway musical. The Brown Paper Box Co. (BPBCo) is currently presenting a brilliant adaptation of that musical for the storefront stage, and its emotion, music craft and energy is nothing sort of a triumph… this small theater company that could does it again. The show has various evening/matinee performances at the The Strawdog Theatre in Chicago through February 9th, 2018. Click here for more details, including ticket information.

Amblin Entertainment has picked up a new film project they will be producing called The White Room. I like that we are seeing Amblin pick up more and more film projects. They have quite the reputation to live up to, and I just hope the films they are currently developing end up living up to the brand name.
The White Room is “a female-driven thriller that takes place over the course of one night in the offseason of the remote Adirondack Mountains. The story unfolds when a mysterious young woman goes missing and it is up to a hardened local widow to find out the truth behind the disappearance, which may have been caused by something inhuman.”
The movie is described as being a mix of Don’t Breathe and Hereditary. The script for the film was written by Bryce McGuire, and Rod Blackhurst (Here Alone, Amanda Knox) is set to direct it.

Happy Independence Day, everyone! While most of us in the Us are busy with BBQs and enjoying some outdoor fun, that doesn’t mean this week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are taking any time off, as we have a handful of titles making their debuts on July 4th.

Rounding out the July 4th home releases are Peelers and a 9-movie creature feature set on DVD featuring all sorts of murderous beasties.

Netflix has announced the list of films that will be available to stream in July. The list includes new never-before-seen original films, as well as documentaries, comedies, animated titles and some classic movies. Check out some of our favorite new offerings below, along with the complete list of all the new additions.

1. “To the Bone” (available July 14)
Marti Noxon’s feature directorial debut was a hit out of Sundance, where the Lily Collins-starring drama about eating disorders won over audiences for its nimble ability to tell a compelling dramatic story interspersed with well-earned humor. Sketched from Noxon’s own experiences with anorexia and bolstered by a star turn from the always-reliable Collins, the film is both important and entertaining, and it should be able to reach a very wide audience on the streaming platform. Do not miss it.
2. “Punch-Drunk Love” (available July 1)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s lauded 2002 romantic dramedy features Adam Sandler in one of his few “hey, this guy can really act!” roles and includes some of the auteur’s most indelible shots and richest observations about life and love. It’s a modern classic, and now it can be piped right into your home. I’m lookin’ at your Netflix queue and I just wanna smash it. I just wanna fuckin’ smash it with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. It’s so pretty.
3. “Chasing Coral” (available July 14)
Jeff Orlowski won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year for his newest feature, a stunning documentary about the fight to protect coral reefs from becoming extinct. Featuring breathtaking and distressing underwater footage, the movie puts into perspective just how endangered coral reefs are and tracks the effort to save them.
4. “Lion” (available July 9)
This heart-wrenching true story was an awards season juggernaut earlier this year, featuring stellar turns from Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel. Based on the unbelievable life of young Saroo Brierley, the feature follows his separation from his family and his startling trip back to them many years later, aided by — for real — Google Maps and his own indomitable heart. Bring tissues.
5. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (available July 18)
The very first standalone “Star Wars” spinoff follows a motley crew of rogues, criminals, rebels, and scallawags as they attempt to steal the plans to the monstrous Death Star in a bid to really just totally stick it to the Empire and Darth Vader. Knowing how it ends — they get them! and…some other stuff, too! — doesn’t dilute its tension and creativity, and it features a banger of an ensemble cast. Let this one tide you over before the next entry in the rapidly expanding movie universe.
6. “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (available July 1)
The early part of the month is heavy on kid-leaning classics, from “Free Willy” to “The Mighty Ducks,” but it’s hard to top the potency of Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic. Gather the whole family around the TV and get heavy on the Reese’s Pieces, and enjoy one of the best films ever made about childhood, friendship, and letting go.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by the film's publicity arm. Director: Rod Blackhurst. Writer: David Ebeltoft. Cast: Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti and Adam David Thompson. There is one thing a film should never be - boring! Failing that, a film should at least be informative. Unfortunately, director Rod Blackhurst and writer David Ebeltoft fail in both of these endeavours, with the zombie non-thriller Here Alone. In the film, the protagonist Ann (Lucy Walters) spends much of her time camping. Finally, two more characters are entered into the mix. But, by this time, your attention will be fading. The film does attempt to deliver a few interesting survival skills, many of which would get you killed in reality. As well, the film's static narrative slows the film's pace. Here Alone was an attempt, by the director, to "convey tone and feeling;" the tone is serious, while the feeling is boredom.

Arriving on VOD platforms and on iTunes today courtesy of Vertical Entertainment is Rod Blackhurst’s Here Alone, a post-apocalyptic drama about three people who cross paths and find their lives forever intertwined as the world around them goes to hell. Written by David Ebeltoft, Here Alone stars Lucy Walters, Adam David Thompson, Gina Piersanti, and Shane West, and recently Daily Dead caught up with Thompson to discuss his involvement with the film. During the interview, he discussed how Here Alone became a turning point in his career, his experiences collaborating with everyone on the project, and even chatted about how much he enjoyed working on another genre movie that came out a few years prior, Dennis Iliadis’ +1.
Great to speak with you today, Adam. It's funny, before I watched the movie, I was doing my research and realized you were also in +1, which I really enjoyed back when I...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Two Very Different Movies Look to Divide Up the Weekend Box Office Business
With Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continuing to dominate at the box office with $90 million this past weekend, and Saban’s Power Rangers (Lionsgate) also doing exceedingly well with $40 million in second place, you wouldn’t think anyone would try to release a movie that might get overshadowed by those two blockbusters.
That said, what’s interesting about this weekend is the fact there are two very different movies that are competing very heavily for second place with DreamWorks Animation’s latest animated family film, The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox), taking on the live action English remake of Ghost In The Shell (Paramount), starring Scarlett Johansson. In most cases,...

When we first meet Ann, she is living in her car in the middle of the woods. What she's doing out there is not immediately explained but from early on, it's clear she's not simply on some peaceful retreat in the woods. She's living out of her car, eating whatever rations she has left in combination with the little she can forage until she simply has nothing left.
Ann is the survivor of an outbreak which has turned most of the population into zombies and as Here Alone moves forward, we get our first glimpse at those zombies when she travels to a nearby house in search of food. From the get-go, it's clear zombies are the least important thing about this movie. We only see a glimpse of them moving quickly through a field, their grunting sounds providing the necessary reaction.

"Thank you for what you did. Not a lot of people would do that nowadays..." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for a post-apocalyptic survival thriller titled Here Alone, which is pretty much just another zombie horror survival movie continuing the zombie trend. This one stars Lucy Walters as a woman surviving on her own, who encounters two other survivors that mess things up. Yes, this sounds way too similar to Z for Zachariah, which is probably why this hasn't picked up any extra buzz over the last year. The full cast includes Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. We initially posted a teaser trailer for this film last year, but then we forgot all about it until now. Still only looks okay. Fire it up. Here's the newest official trailer (+ poster) for Rod Blackhurst's Here Alone, direct from YouTube: After a terrible virus ravages human civilization,...

We had our first promising look at Rod Blackhurst's Pa thriller Here Alone last year, shortly after the movie won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
At the time, the movie didn't have a release date but after a successful festival run, Here Alone is finally getting a theatrical release.
Lucy Walters stars as Ann, a young woman living alone in the wilderness and trying to survive after an unexplained outbreak has turned most of the population into zombies. Her somewhat peaceful survival is put into jeopardy when she encounters and helps a pair of survivors.

A second trailer has emerged for Rod Blackhurst's Here Alone. This second clip is longer and shows many more scenes. Released by Vertical Entertainment, this trailer also shows more of the film's central characters. The film stars: Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti and Adam David Thompson. Slated for a late March Video-on-demand launch, Here Alone looks to satisfy zombie film fans or those who like survivalist scenarios. The film's two minute plus trailer is hosted here. The trailer expands on the film's story, quite a bit. Initial scenes show a family evacuating a town or city. These scenes were missing from the first trailer, which was released in April of 2016. Significantly, it also shows one of the initial, central characters missing from later scenes. As well, the ending is hinted at with "you brought us out here for a reason." From the scenes, one uninfected character may have nefarious intentions.

Many are called, few are chosen: The number of high-quality, awards-worthy documentaries seems to grow every year, but there’s still only 15 slots on the Oscar documentary shortlist. That will be announced December 5; the final five will be revealed on nominations morning, January 24. This year, 145 features were submitted.
This is the white-knuckle portion of the final campaign stretch, as documentary filmmakers and distributors hope their movies make it onto documentary branch voters’ viewing piles before they file their final grades. Those with the advantage are high-profile established hits and festival award-winners with the right combination of engaging accessibility, artful filmmaking, and gravitas.
So what’s looking like a strong bet? It’s a diverse list in more ways than one. Here are my picks for the Top 15, which are not listed in order of likelihood.

Russian editing whizzes Sergei Eisenstein, Vsevolod Pudovkin, and Lev Kuleshov proved it in the earliest days of silent film: Truth rests in the eye of the beholder. In Fred Schepisi’s 1988 true drama, “A Cry in the Dark,” Meryl Streep starred as the woman who famously cried “a dingo took my baby!” to resounding disbelief in Australia. Police and others looked at her inexpressive face, surrounded by a cowl of dark hair, and decided she was guilty of murdering her child.
Similarly, the court of public opinion — as well as the courts of Italy — declared that 20-year-old party girl Amanda Knox, studying abroad in Perugia, murdered her roommate, Meredith Kercher. It took eight years, but in 2015 the Italian Supreme Court finally declared her innocent, and that she had no motive.

“Believe her” or “suspect her.” Those are the options given by two trailers Netflix dropped on Today for their upcoming documentary “Amanda Knox.” The film delves into the case, subsequent conviction, and eventual acquittal of Knox, 29, along with her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher while studying abroad in Perugia, Italy in 2007.
Knox spent 4 years in Italian prison, until the case was appealed on Oct. 4, 2011, but the case continued to be challenged from both sides, leading to a second conviction and acquittal in 2014-2015.

Two of the most mis-quoted lines in Lord Tennyson’s poem ‘In Memoriam’ are… 'Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all. These lines are often taken out of their context (the author’s mourning the loss of a dear friend) to mean the end of a romantic relationship, that we are to find some consolation in this time of grief, that we at least loved for a time in our life. The rest of us, with dour expressions on our faces, saying never having felt of the pain of such loss ‘tis better instead. Loneliness hurts less than such loss. And then there is an apocalypse, which brings us to Ann in Rod Blackhurst’s apocalyptic survival tale Here Alone. A...

It doesn’t seem like post-apocalyptic zombie films will be going away anytime soon. In fact, there seems to be a good amount of independent films that use this as the basis for their stories. Here Alone seems to be one of these films, but it looks and sounds like it will be a good one. The movie recently won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival, so that’s gotta say something about it. We now have a trailer for you to watch and it definitely sparked my interest.
After a terrible virus ravages human civilization, Ann finds herself living alone in a forest, foraging for supplies, and accompanied only by a radio that broadcasts a single transmission in French. Few animals even remain; the only survivors seem to be the roving hordes of infected creatures with a taste for human flesh. One fateful day, Ann crosses paths with two more survivors,...

Here Alone (2016) Film Review from the 15th Annual Tribeca Film Festival, a movie directed by Rob Blackhurst and starring Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson, and Shane West. Here Alone is a survivalist style film, set in a viral pandemic. From director Rob Blackhurst and writer David Ebeltoft, the film recently won a narrative feature audience award, at Tribeca, in New York. The film is indie in nature and produced by a large cadre of production companies, including Gentile Entertainment Group. The film stars Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. Recently, a trailer has been released for the film. That clip can be seen here. The film's story begins with Ann (Walters). She finds herself lost, alone and afraid. A virus is infecting everything living and turning most into raging creatures, with the hunger for human flesh. Eventually, Ann meets two other survivors: Chris (Thompson) and Olivia (Piersanti). Together, they try to start a new community, despite Ann's reluctance to re-enter the remnants of society. The trailer shows Ann in various scenarios. In one scene,...

"You have a very nice setup here... A tent, food - from what I can tell, a car. Most people would kill for this stuff..." This new post-apocalyptic thriller just won the Audience Award at the Tribeca Film Festival that took place in NYC this month. It's called Here Alone and is yet another zombie post-apocalyptic survival movie (there have been quite a few recently), this one also involves a plot similar to Z for Zachariah where a young woman surviving on her own encounters two other survivors. As expected, this causes problems. The cast includes Lucy Walters, Gina Piersanti, Adam David Thompson and Shane West. I'm certainly intrigued, especially knowing that Tribeca audiences loved the film, but I still want to see more footage first. Here's the first official teaser trailer for Rod Blackhurst's Here Alone, direct from YouTube: After a terrible virus ravages human civilization, Ann finds...

It’s a common misconception that horror movies can only be scary on a physical level. Take the zombie subgenre, for example. While zombies showcase horrifying, flesh-torn appearances, there’s just as much “unseen” horror to be found in Armageddon scenarios and the total societal breakdowns that their presence causes. Those changing environmental dynamics that characters deal with internally versus the the shambling, undead monsters who represent a more tangible enemy. Fear comes by way of choices that must be made, and in a film like Rod Blackhurst’s Here Alone, actual creatures play second fiddle to isolated, apocalyptic dread. “Zombies” attack, but decisions haunt – if you can stomach a more slow-burn aesthetic.
To be fair, David Ebeltoft’s script is not a straight-forward Romero take on zombie lore. It’s more a 28 Days Later viral thriller that follows a lone woman, Ann (Lucy Walters), as she tries to survive alone in the wilderness.

The Return by Kelly Duane de la Vega and Katie Galloway was chosen for the documentary award and chronicles the consequences of the repeal of the American three-strikes law.
Each award comes with a cash prize of $10,000. As part of the Tribeca Film Festival Artists Awards programme, Here Alone receives Zak Kitnick’s Untitled artwork and The Return receives Clifford Ross’s Horizon XI print.
“It’s great to see audiences finding and supporting a true discovery film like Here Alone and the powerful and affecting documentary The Return,” said festival director Genna Terranova. “While very different films, both highlight the resilience of the human spirit.”
