Nic Pizzolatto's crime drama anthology series for HBO may be coming back for a fourth season, but Pizzolatto won't be returning this time around. According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, HBO has brought Issa López on board to take over script duties for the show's next season, tentatively titled "True Detective: Night Country." Omar Chaparro, one of Mexico’s most popular comedian-actors, and Mexican-Lebanese actress Edy Ganem (“Devious Maids”) have been cast as leads in feature drama “7th & Union” from newly launched Broken English Productions.
Launched in response to Hollywood’s paucity of diverse voices, in front and behind the camera, Broken English Prods. was unveiled mid-June by fledgling film finance company Grandave Capital, which plans to invest some $20 million in two to four Latinx projects with budgets of up to $5 million.
“We are proud to kick off Broken English Prods. with such a strong and commercial cast. Paired with [director] Anthony Nardolillo’s vision, ‘7th & Union’ is just the beginning of our investment in the Latinx pool of talent and projects,” said Broken English Prods. head Christopher Acebo.

Five years ago — almost to the date — Pantelion Films, the Spanish-language and bilingual outfit from Lionsgate and Mexico’s Televisa, released the smash hit “Instructions Not Including,” starring Eugenio Derbez. Turning its leading man into a bankable movie star, the dramedy about a father raising his long-lost prepubescent daughter scored hugely with audiences both in its homeland and stateside with record-breaking grosses in both markets.
After a long string of box-office triumphs, from PG-13 comedies to an animated feature and even a gender-reversed remake of 1987’s “Overboard” (starring Derbez), the production company and distributor has established itself as an enviable venture, catering to its core audience in the U.S. (Latino immigrants familiar with homegrown talent) and expanding into the Anglo space via collaborations with popular American comedians. The artistic value of its productions is not as significant as their role filling in a gap with content that a large...

The weekend delivered mostly on expectations with the week's three new wide releases taking the top three spots at the box office. Leading the way was Universal's Fifty Shades Freed, pushing the Fifty Shades franchise over $1 billion globally. Sony's release of Peter Rabbit actually topped expectations while Clint Eastwood's The 15:17 to Paris was a little late arriving in the station, coming up a bit short of Mojo's pre-weekend forecast. With an estimated $38.8 million, Universal's Fifty Shades Freed topped the weekend box office. While the number is almost spot on with Mojo's pre-weekend expectations it once again shows a decline within the franchise from one film to the next, coming up short of the $46.6 million opening for Fifty Shades Darker one year ago. By the end of its run, Darker pulled in $114.5 million domestically and should Freed deliver a similar multiplier it would be looking at a...

Actor Ryan Carnes (“Desperate Housewives,” “General Hospital”) didn’t have to pretend to be a fish-out-water in Mexico City in the bilingual comedy, La Boda De Valentina. He experienced a similar journey as the character he plays on screen in the Mexican comedy. Acting opposite Marimar Vega and Omar Chaparro, the non-Spanish speaker was in for a big surprise when he landed in Mexico and found out the Mexican comedy was 90% in Spanish.
