I have watched a few series where there are more episodes than the plot could carry so the series becomes bogged down and boring. This series is the opposite to this. I watched two or three episodes per night. I had to force myself to stop watching. The writing is over the top great. They story is never predictable and there are to many story lines to follow to be boring. I will probably watch it again. I enjoyed the language mixture and most of the casting was perfectly done. The loose ends at the end are story lines that are still developing and will be for years to come. The Sami people deserve to have their story told and this production was an excellent start.

Some French in the very Northland
BeneCumb12 June 2017
This century has seen dozens of fine examples of Nordic Noir, particularly from Denmark and Sweden, but its wings have spread and presently many other countries are eager to shine or at least participate in the glory - like France here; on the other hand, for the sake of wider audiences and localities, the Nordics themselves need views and characters from aside.

Midnattssol has giftedly combined the opportunities based on above, and the result is an intriguing narration with interesting references to the past, versatile twists, beautiful nature, and maintenance of tension and thrill to almost the very end. The leading performances are not the finest - plus pity that a wonderful actor, Peter Stormare, was cut out so early - but, on the other hand, it enhances realism and pays attention to team efforts rather than a single solo (although the French lady is very keen on pursuing this :)). And last but not least - magnificent landscape, with daily life and difficulties of small Sami people, with what most viewers are not aware of.

Well, perhaps the wrongdoer was not too charismatic and the French connection remained somehow incomplete, but still, the series is worth watching - unless you are inured to fast action, lots of chases and betrayals. Life beyond the Polar circle has its own pace and angles...

Thoroughly enjoyed and thrilled
corbens18 January 2017
I enjoyed this series. The thrills start with the very first scene. Fantastic scenery and thrilling plot. Some characters could have developed more such as the prosecutor but overall I thought it was great. The scenery is fantastic.....the starkness surprised me. The sub plots about the french detective and her emotional and physical struggles and her relationships was interesting though at times frustrating to me. I'd like to have known more about the prosecutor the prejudices against him and his relationships. It was left open to the last few episodes and the chase to try to find and stop whodunit. There are surprises however right up to the end.

Excellent Top Notch Murder Mystery Series in the Nordic Noir Genre
jk-692-23639420 April 2017
I watch a ton of foreign murder series. All the "big" name ones, and tons of mediocre, not so great ones. Midnight Sun was gripping.

I enjoy when I watch a series and learn about other cultures at the same time. A big part of this story involved the "Sami" people. The Sami people (also Sámi or Saami, traditionally known in English as Lapps or Laplanders) are an indigenous Finno-Ugric people inhabiting the Arctic area of Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. ( hat tip to Wiki). The series has a mix of French, English and Swedish, so you do need subtitles. I enjoyed the mix.

I had never heard of these people, and it was interesting to do a little research and learn. I felt the actors were top notch. Some of these reviews complained when one of the policemen makes an early exit from the show. I was disappointed as well, but the other policemen grows on you. ( Trying to avoid spoilers, so no names).

The French actress, Leïla Bekhti is mesmerizing. I would like to see her in more series available for a broader market. The rest of the actors were very good, right down to the town people. I am usually able to guess the murderer/s quite early on, since I watch so many shows like this, but this one keeps you guessing.

There are many layers that unfold as the story continues, and you are not sure what is going on exactly.

I enjoyed that. Also there were some new and gruesome ways to murder people in this show. It is not the same old, that is for sure. This was not the usual dark setting of many Nordic series. The scenery is beautiful. It is always sunny. The are in the constant sunlight period of the region.

I binged watched this over two days. Sometimes with some of these shows that unfold more slowly, you get into the rhythm better with binge watching it.

I enjoyed that this show was not depressing. Which is a surprise maybe since people do die in gruesome ways. Some of these tend to be so dark and sad with their main characters. These main characters had back stories, but were more hopeful in tone.

I find it refreshing to watch the slower pace and the use of silence to make a point, and punctuate moments. This tends to not be the way of American shows, that is for sure! I highly recommend this. It was done by the same writers who did "Swedish/Danish TV series Bron/Broen or The Bridge". which is amazing.

Breathtakingly beautiful
BlueBoris24 January 2017
This is a series which requires concentration as there are several story lines intertwined. Going back in time to where the story started is the start of a fascinating journey to the present events and it is told in a thrilling way... As a huge fan of Scandi Noir such as The Bridge, Jordskott, Trapped,The Tunnel, we binge watched this show on SBS on Demand in Australia over three nights and couldn't get enough of it... Haunting music, magnificent scenery and a cast who were fantastic especially Leila Bekhti, Gustaf Hammerson, Richard Ulfsater and Iggy Malmborg. In addition to the fine acting add some scenes that really made us sit up and take notice - this is Scandi Noir on steroids... Loved it!

Could have been better
Purple-cookie8718 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to give this a higher score, but I just found myself so frustrated with some parts, to the point that frustration was probably my overall feeling.

The good - it's an interesting police mystery. A few twists and turns and developments that do keep you guessing. I wasn't really familiar with the Sami People and found this focus interesting. The story does well to discuss discrimination without you feeling like you're being smacked over the head with it. It felt so much more genuine and an interesting thread throughout the series.

I know some people have commented on the unrealistic police procedures or story line, but the only thing that has ever come close to realistically showing police procedures was Hot Fuzz, and that's saying something. If you want real life stories, watch a documentary.

There were some great characters and actors too, which is key really. No matter how good a plot is, if you can't connect to the characters, you won't be as invested.

That being said, the parts of this series that I disliked were in relation to a character. Kahina, the French detective, was insufferable! I don't want this to take away from Leila's acting because she was brilliant. I'm tired of the neurotic female police officer character, why can't women be police officers without having some mental trauma? She was incredibly self righteous, as well as being back stabbing and selfish. She betrayed the one person who she trusted. She was rude to almost everyone she met, disrespectful to other cultures, and never seemed to stop crying.

This was made worse as a seemingly large portion of the show was focused on her and her child, which offered no real growth to the plot or to her character. She didn't redeem herself in anyway. When she finds out her son is at the bottom of a well, she lets someone else go get him and stays inside to get a one up on someone. The storyline between her and her son was such a waste of time. You can skip anytime you see him on screen.

When you compare Kahina's character arc to Andres' it feels like two different writers. Andres' was subtle and paralleled with the story line well. He didn't get anywhere near as much focus as Kahina, yet he was the more likeable of the two.

So in summary. It's a good, binge-able show with an interesting storyline. No it's not real life, but that's what stories are for. Would be better without all the Kahina drama, but I would still recommend it.

Extremely good!
naeringsliv5 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I was totally hooked on this one. So exciting and so thrilling! I give Midnight Sun a 10 out of 10, straight.

The setting is almost in my neighborhood. It is just across the border from where I am, so I am familiar both with the landscape and the people. The eeriness just grabs me totally. Because it is somewhat an eerie landscape with some eerie people and buildings. It is not like that on the Norwegian side, so I have felt the spookiness myself several times. So boosting the eeriness that already is there, that works totally for me. But, people from other countries and other regions will not see it the same as I do, I guess. It is not just another foreign place far away that you can't relate to emotionally. That is the advantage when a series or film is from nearby.

I don't want to comment to much about the actual things that are happening in the series, because it can easily be a spoiler for some. But I will tell that I was totally blown away sometimes, when I realized that things was not as they appeared. I thought; how on earth did they come up with that? Genius!

I think the acting was pretty good. Nordic people can be somewhat like the Swedish investigator, so I don't want to criticize his acting.

And yes, the most important. The Sami indigenous people have a lot of secrets. They are known to be able to do stuff, and to find out stuff in other ways than traditionally. They do have shamans even today. So I don't see any unrealism in that either. But of course it is boosted a bit. But not overly over the top. But I guess it can appear unreal for a foreigner.

Bottom line: I did so much enjoy this series that I was almost speechless at times. I highly recommend it! It is a breathtaking thriller with lots of exciting and strange elements. And it is totally exciting all the time. I saw it on Swedish television, so I had to wait for each episode to be launched. And I could hardly wait! A very different thriller than the usual American stuff, and that is a good thing. Thumbs up - big time!

Good acting; good script; idiotic story line.
macpet49-119 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Anyone watching this comes away with the impression (and rightly so) that the Swedes are the most naive and idiotic people and perhaps it may be true. They have lived (as things have now changed with the addition of immigrants) in a rather childish world for some time and it shows. Their police are infants and brutish high school bullies (Hey, not unlike America!). They continuously ruin crime scenes, cover for mistakes, take bribes, lose track of clues, don't follow up leads and generally let their personal lives take priority at all times over crime solving. The French aren't much better in that they are more worldly but into bribery and subterfuge.

The actors are all fine, able beings who deliver. Unfortunately the characters they are portraying are so flawed they are impossible to empathize with unless you are under 30 in which case you have no morals or ethics anyway.

Sad as it could have been so much better.

very exciting
kriszti-8394914 June 2018
First I was a bit disappointed, I had no expectations at all, but the first episode was a bit slow for me. I kept on watching because of the nice scenery it plays on. The whole police investigation looked like a sort of chaos, they were tapping in the dark and the small details they found out just didn't add up but then there was a turning point and after that every little puzzle came to its place. It was very exciting and the places where they made the film were really breathtaking.

Very good, but...
macpet49-113 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Interesting story but if you watch this you'll come away believing the Scandinavians to be a bunch of naive and backward hillbilly boobs from another era. I've never seen so many laid back dim wits in my life. It's sad. The most intelligent person in the group is a French female detective sent to review the crime scenes because it has involved at least one French citizen. One would think Arkansas and West Virginia are alive and well near the reaches of the Arctic Circle! As I've never been there, I can't say for certain but I am of Scandinavian blood and it made me ashamed of my heritage to watch them.

Superb meaningful thriller - very mild spoiler below
tonymartin-7618213 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A very strong story and message played out with drama and moments of high tension.

Beautiful scenery, evocative soundtrack

Solid message for our times.

And OK some slightly stiff acting at times but credible and worth persevering

By the end, all will be clear, but you will find it hard to decide whether you are sympathetic to the killer(s) or the deceased ....

It's good but has it's moments....
tasmaniangirl18 December 2016
I wanted to like this movie and I mostly did but it ruined things by taking itself far too seriously on the one hand and not seriously enough on the other. I'll try to explain. The plot is good, interesting characters, nicely built suspense and mystery and some of the most gruesome murders I've ever seen outside of pure torture porn/slasher movies. There's the potential for some nice character development and in the case of one older man it happens but is cut off all too soon. In other characters it never really eventuates - sadly.

I like a series or movie where I really don't want particular characters to die and that was the case for me with the "town drunk" and his lady friend. I was sufficiently intrigued by the mystery to stay for the entire shebang tho the final episode was a stretch and I actually skipped a large chunk in the middle due to the overuse of tragic violins, slow motion camera work, etc etc over-doing the drama. This brings me to the negative. First of all the "too seriously part. The lead female character was unbelievably self-absorbed, churlish, petty & rude. She continually showed a shocking lack of ordinary common sense let alone official police officer sense. The character ended up irritating me no end. And the direction and production of the series seemed to think this was the best part of the whole shebang so they draw out excruciatingly long scenes with her having tiresome "moments" of drama with god- awful overly dramatic violin music in the background making it even more headache inducing. Honestly, 'over-wrought" would be an under-statement both in terms of the production and the lead female's acting - tho I suspect that's how the director told her to play it. This rubbish almost put me off watching the series but there was just enough to keep me interested.

The other thing that almost made me stop watching was the mind-numbingly stupid behaviour of the Prosecutor, the police and other characters throughout the show - used to advance the narrative and force situations that were quite ludicrous. Nobody yells out and lets bad guys know they are there thereby losing the element of surprise instead of hiding, running away or sneaking up and attacking the villain. No cop just blunders into situations without checking around first. And don't get me started on how dense the Prosecutor was in every possible respect. Again - it's a wonder I kept watching coz that unrealistic level of stupidity usually sends me screaming off to watch something else. I guess the story was good enough to keep me tho - in particular the fascinating stuff about the local indigenous people and their rituals etc. I had no idea they even existed. Worth watching just for that.

Overall I recommend this series, it has enough positive to be worthwhile but be aware of it's negatives. They are annoying as hell. Shame coz this could easily have rated a 7 or 8 but too much was awful about it.

Very enjoyable
michellevamva8 March 2017
Enjoying the story line and plot, with amazing shots and beautiful scenery. Not an action series, but great plot with some torture scenes. A hidden culture that surprises you and makes you wonder if they actually exist. Great to watch. The cinematography / style seems to be almost the same as Sense8. Love it.

Beautiful international drama in a small Swedish town
MatnvannPlatn25 June 2018
After a French national is murdered in Sámi territory in north Sweden, troubled investigator Kahina Zahdi (Leïla Bekhti) is sent out to investigate. She quickly learns there's a lot more at play.

The small local police force is faced with the task of solving a gruesome murder, unheard of in the otherwise sleepy mining community. And when lead investigator Rutger Burlin (Peter Stormare) unexpectedly takes his leave, the investigation suddenly lands on the shoulders of the somewhat clumsy public prosecutor Anders Harnesk (Gustaf Hammarsten), whom hardly anybody holds in high regard. Tensions only worsen when it turns out the French murder is only the tip of the iceberg, which puts both the mining community as well as the Sámi on edge. There's even a minor role for the Kven people.

Midnattssol offers an interesting window into Sámi culture, while succesfully contrasting the beauty and tranquility of the northern Swedish landscape and its six-month daylight with the dark cruelty of a troubled mind. While the mystification of Sámi customs may be a bit overdone, with at times incessant traditional joik singing and visions of reindeer, having a nåjd (Sámi shaman) make unexpected jokes lightens the mood sometimes.

The series touches on quite a few issues, such as racism, the treatment of minorities and their fight for basic rights, acceptance of (homo)sexuality, the bonds between parents and children, greed, honesty, revenge, and international relations. Almost all main characters grow and develop considerably during this multilingual drama, and they all have their own issues to overcome.

As a viewer, you really find yourself divided between the mining community and the Sámi, the motives of the murderer and the (not so innocent) victims, which in itself also reflects the inner turmoil of lead investigator Harnesk, who is half Swedish, half Sámi himself.

Small wonder both Hammarsted and Bekhti were nominees for Outstanding Actor and Outstanding Actress in a Drama TV Series at the Montecarlo TV Festival, and Midnattssol won the Kristallen Best Drama of the Year award.

Nice detail: the town of Kiruna does exist in real life, and it really plans to move in its entirety a few kilometres because of the iron mine.

So far - loving it, but early days of course.
gce230816 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I love foreign movies. Especially any Nordic type ones. So of course I was drawn to this the minute I saw it advertised down here on SBS television in Australia. I've only watched episode 1. The first 3 minutes certainly got my interest, that's for sure. Pretty shocking.

The self harm bit early on at the traffic lights by our heroine made me roll my eyes and I thought oh god no, not this old chestnut again as part of the storyline, pah-leeese!! It actually irritated me enough to think about turning it off right then and there.

BUT ... I'm so glad I didn't. Because by the 36th minute I was shocked/horrified (again), gripped - and now totally hooked! Gotta love those Swedish film makers; this is great stuff and looks like being something pretty damn good.

And the back story of the self harm and our heroine's personal angst has so far not been expanded upon, so I guess that is yet to come. But all is forgiven! I'm liking everything else too much to feel annoyed by it anymore.

I was only going to watch 1 episode then off to bed - but no, I am absolutely compelled to watch just one more episode - at least!

Leave it to the Scandinavians to dream up bizarre murders.
AntiHeroAnnie30 October 2018
This story is well constructed and the acting is superb.

But there are also a lot of other interesting elements in this series. There are the cultural differences. Not only between the French and the Swedes, but also between the Swedes and the indigenous people. The story is set in the far north of Sweden, so a large part of the year there is no night. So this is a problem for our French detective who is not used to that. Discrimination is covered, but it doesn't distract from the main goal of the story; caching the killer. I also liked the fact that the two main characters undergo personal growth throughout the whole series.

Everything is just right and all actions and events can be well explained by the characters of all the characters. And that says a lot when you start the opening scene of the series with a man tied to a propeller of a helicopter. After seeing the first episode I didn't quite know what to make of it. Such a bizarre murder, some dark sense of humour and right after that a really emotional scene. But after watching the second episode I got more into the atmosphere of the story and it got better and better after each episode.

In the last episode there is a rather long scene with only images with a music score. The music is so well made that it isn't melodramatic or inflame other sentiments. It is rather a moment of reflection. Something to think about without being moralistic.

This is the best Scandinavian detective series I've seen so far. And I've seen a lot. I can not think of anything that I didn't liked about it.

Stupid, easy and nonsensical
rosanneb-0639313 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
How people think that Mittnattsol is better than the Bridge baffles me. The Bridge is elegant, sophisticated, well-armed, and disarming because of the lead's issues. Mittnattsol is, in my opinion, none of those things. In fact, the more I watched, the more ridiculous and laughable.

The series starts with a guy being killed by helicopter. I'm no physicist, but I'm assuming that would throw the chopper off balance. Next, a French detective is sent to Sweden to solve this crime as the victim was French, which happened.. Never. It happened in Sweden and thus its under Swedish jurisdiction.

Zahina the female lead, seems to know all these things without having to investigate and makes incredibly poor choices all the time which just seem to magically work out.

In fact, the whole series is filled with scenes which are very illogical and obviously only there to fulfill a function. Zahina goes to visit a suspect and hasn't slept. Anders calls her. They chat. She continues driving. She falls asleep but is jolted awake by - hey guess who - Anders again. With no news, just a really lame question which you wouldnt call for. What was the point? It's just one of the many illogical consequences that happen to save someone or provide a clue.

Zahina's son hitchhikes to Sweden to ask if she's his mum. Why now? Not explained. Furthermore, he's a little mad that she ran away. They talk. They cry. In about one minute, with some dramatic music in the background, she explains everything and he has his answers. 9 Another thing - everyone who recieves a punch is knock-out instantly. How convenient.

Comparing this to the Bridge actually makes me a little mad. There is no suspense, the acting is mediocre and the script seems like it's been written by a teenager. It's tacky, way too easy and the discoveries that lead to the plot twists aren't clever or ingenious, or even logical.

I blame SAS.
dpitta20 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
On a long flight on SAS, I saw the first three episodes of Midnight Sun and became hooked. As an American, I could not find a DVD I could watch in the states. The first part of the series was so haunting that I found help with our technical problems (PAL vs NTSC TV's) and DVD Region restrictions.

The series is much more complicated and well written than ordinary police fiction. The main characters are well drawn and despite issues that other critics have noted about police procedure (rushing into a situation without backup, letting the bad guys ambush the cops) I found the writing and acting riveting.

The story line is convoluted but nowadays the scenario seems plausible. In most drama the reader or viewer has to suspend judgment sometimes. Midnight Sun, with the exception of the powers of the Sami noaide, did not require much suspension. The ending was unexpected.

I regret that the season started with a premise and brought it to a logical conclusion. That, for me, means that perhaps the story has been told and no second story would be strong enough to justify a second season.

If you ever visited the region, this is good to watch
DrRon20204 September 2020
Having traveled through this magical part of Sweden many times, I found this series great to watch. If alone for the amazing scenery. The story I think is over the top and unrealistic. I am not sure if it pays enough tribute to the Sami people, but at least everyone now knows what a noaidi is and how singing a joik sounds. I guess few people realized how much iron ore the Kiruna mine-complex produces. So, I liked this series, made me remember the many days in the wild I spent out there.

Some big mistakes
garethbridges13 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Another reviewers have said it already - this has some profoundly illogical and poorly conceived plot elements.

I love Scandanavian crime noir, being a near fanatical devotee of The Bridge, and fan of Wallander and the Millenium series, so I was looking forward to this edgy, atmospheric contribution. I wanted to like it, but the plot flaws were too striking for me to fully engage.

Rather than go through all the plot flaws in detail, and it is actually pretty relentless, I will critique just a few of them that really irked me!

* Massive Spoiler Alert*

The first murder is ludicrous. The means of death, strapping someone to a helicopter rotor blade defies description. Where to begin? First, what inertial forces are produced by a rotor in motion? Well, pretty huge actually - and easily enough to kill someone, but you actually need a high differential force to rip a head off. But that doesn't even really bother me. I am an engineer/physicist, and I haven't bothered to work out its feasibility, because it is just so stupid on other levels. As a means of death, well the victim will pass out before they die, and they will die before the massive physical damage is evident. As other critics have pointed out, the unbalance in the rotor would prevent it ever getting up to speed. Then, even if that were all OK, to kill someone this way you have to steal a helicopter (from a small company with 3 vehicles!), fly it to the middle of nowhere, and then presumably walk home - all without being detected in any of the 17 ways this can go wrong! And even if all that is conceded all that, that specific means of death was not a necessary plot/thematic element - so basically it's a pile of rubbish for nothing. It really felt that the show's producers thought it would be very edgy and noir. Am I being picky?

In one of the plot constructions, 10 years previous to the present day, one of the characters has his son murdered (drowned) in front of him, while he is tied down to watch. This murder, in this cockamamie world, was a threat. Like, you tell the cops and we'll...er...kill your son, the most precious thing in your life? Oh wait,we just did that! I would think that to callously murder someone's son in front of them, and then release the guy with this so called "warning" is more likely to incite a vicious, homicidal retaliation! Wouldn't it?

And so it goes. You get the drift. All edge, no sense. Or all tip, no iceberg, as the saying goes.

Other elements of the plot were interesting, but none of the characters ever settled down to something plausible and relatable.

The series' joke was a good one. This is where a wise shaman is asked where another, more elusive shaman, with expert knowledge in drugs and poisons, could be found. Long pause..."Facebook" she replied. Ho ho.

Despite my negative comments here I found the show kind of watchable on a rainy day. hence the 3/10.
