Breakapart by Acollective

Acollective's, "Breakapart", separates itself from the traditional music video template by using album art to convey its message. Directors, Noam Sharon and Tal Zagreba, begin the video with a record player nestled beside a bottle of wine, a couple of half-filled glasses and a record of Freddie Mercury's, "Mr. Bad Guy" album. However, Freddy Mercury's portrait is replaced by a member of the band. A hand enters the frame to place the needle upon the record and the actor posing as Mercury begins to sing.
Thus begins the various scenes of actors behind numerous records. It's the album art in which the video primarily pays homage. Instead of conveying their message through jump cuts of the artists in different locales, their deviceful use of record fronts are used in place. In one scene, Bruce Springsteen is leaning on Drake. In another, Beck is fishing for the Nirvana album, "Nevermind", with a $100 bill in a fish tank. Notorious B.I.G screams behind bars, Bob Marley sings on the street and three different Elvis's perform on stage.
The song itself is an upbeat, rock and roll track. Within its cryptic lyrics are lines consisting of hearts beating and bleeding, aging memories and past lovers. The lyrics lend themselves to the creative direction that the directors were aiming for when using older album art as their visuals. Breakapart by Acollective is an official selection of the New York City Independent Film Festival and will be screened at the festival on October 12-18, 2015.
