Dead in the Water
jordan224022 August 2020
Have you seen the commercial where the group of young adults is running from a madman, and instead of getting in the running car, they hide behind the chainsaws in the barn? Well, this movie is that stupid. It's unintentionally comically stupid in parts, but not enough to get a recommendation. This one deserves it's crappy user rating.

A boating disaster
bcansevgisi9 March 2020
Although the concept of rich college kids battling hillbillies has been massively overdone in the film industry, the genre still attracts viewers when done right (Like me!).

Well, this title does nothing right...

For the first time in my life, I wanted all the characters dead, right after they had a few minutes of screen time. There was nobody for me to root for... not the stupid kids, not the dumb fishermen either.

How do they make movies as bad as this one and not retire from the whole industry, feeling ashamed of the outcome?

P.S: I didn't get the kiwi references that kept popping out now and then. It must have been a kind of an inside joke.

Terrible acting
Shadowking10018 September 2021
Very cliche plot of dumb college kids making dumb choices. Some parts were actually decent and watchable, but the acting/script were so terrible that it made the movie complete trash.

One example of a stupid/infuriating scene: One bad guy vs three "good guys"; fourth good guy sneaks up & hits bad guy from behind, then grabs and struggles with bad guy. What do the other three "good guys" do? They continue to sit around watching this struggle without helping. Mind you, one of the "good guys" is holding a loaded shotgun! Ugh.....Give this a pass unless extremely desperate.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm an sucker for movies like this. Especially on a boat where you have nowhere to escape. Ashley is the hot blond that might be raped or killed. But you wouldn't know it by the lack of fear or a sense of urgency to escape.

The main villain is so over the top it's comical. "Say your a Lobster!!! say It!" Wow you're a scary guy!

Sorry... Not one scary scene in the whole movie...

DEAD ON ARRIVAL
thesar-212 July 2020
I should've listened to my gut instinct. 20 seconds in, I wanted to turn this off.

The movie opens showing a boat "on fire" in a body of water with the most incredibly fake looking fire/explosions I've probably ever seen. THIS is what they chose to begin their story with?

I get it, immediately. For shock value and using an old movie trope of beginning at the end so you know this is not going to end well. Blah, blah, been there, many have done that. BUT, I could've easily forgiven that if the CGI didn't look so buck-fifty cheap.

I digress. I continued with movie with the premise this is "inspired" by a true story and I enjoyed the similar Open Water franchise. Mercifully, my few rewards for continuing on: most of the actors were really trying their best here, the captain being the best character and actor by a landslide and some drone shots of the open water and boat were really gorgeous.

That all said, the acting is bad, the movie's continuity is so far off - the boat isn't that big, but it apparently it takes determined characters 5-6 minutes to travel a few feet which is just enough time for our heroes to complete whatever the story needed them to and characters barely react how any normal humans would. Case in point the very ending - no spoilers, but when the ending occurred, I was like: You're not going to say anything? Really? This isn't a surprise to you? Or wow I can't believe this happened?

Basically, four college kids need to make it from one shore to an island for what looks like the most boring and toned-down party ever, even though these young adults act like it's the party of the century. They miss the Ferry so they charter a stranger's boat, who they always say he's the guiltiest looking person, but honestly, he, Bobby, has the most charisma short of the Captain.

Well, backstories are given about the four passengers, but two doofuses antagonize Bobby after unbelievably using every substance anyone can get into, including alcohol, beer, cigarettes, cigars and pot. It was as if, OH!, the filmmaker's needed to pad the screen-time with the weak premise probably incredibly loosely based on a true event.

Regardless of their child's play, Bobby and the Captain already had a plan for these punks and then things get messy. And progressively horrifying for them.

I would sorely recommend you skip this, save yourself and just watch Open Water 1-2. Much better movies. This one just felt like such a Film School project. I mean bravo for making the film and to the cast who really tried - well, except for the lead, Noah Gaynor, who really looked like he slept-walked through this. It just overall, wasn't that good.

***

Final thoughts: Considering how bad Open Water 3 was (so bad, I saw it and literally cannot remember a thing about it, and even though I've only seen all three Open Water movies once apiece, I remember almost every detail of 1-2,) they might as well threw this into the series renaming it: Open Water 4: Dead Sound. At least it might have made more being attached to a franchise.

Also...what's with the title? What does that even mean? There wasn't even a silent scene in the movie that would necessitate the title's prediction.

I know this movie in some ways was very obvious in what would happen. However I liked it because it was a true story of what happened to the writer of the film.

Interesting
BandSAboutMovies1 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Four best friends from boarding school - rich kids, of course, the kind you most want to die - are headed to Block Island for the kind of graduation party that only exists in movies. But oh no - they miss the last ferry and get the trip from hell thanks to a crew that has no intention of letting them live, much less make the party.

Jeff Kober, who was in the remake of The Hills Have Eyes 2, as well as Tank Girl, The First Power and the TV series Kindred: The Embraced plays the main villain. Matty Cardarople, who plays Keith the video store guy on Stranger Things, and Brett Azar, who was a T-800 in the Terminator: Dark Fate, also show up.

It also has the based on a true story tag, so...you knew I had to watch it.

A fun Ride No Matter Your Generation!
breemichaelwarner3 March 2020
I'm a sucker for suspense thrillers and I have to say this was such a pleasant surprise! Despite my being part of Generation X, I completely enjoyed the dynamics between the younger Millennial crowd, as some things always remain the same. The Have and Have Not's of young adult social networks permeate every generation and you see a lot of that playing out in the undercurrent here. We've all been there, Jocks, Trust Fund kids, Prom Queen and that everyday Joe that somehow becomes lucky enough to be invited into the inner sanctum. So what happens when you slam them all together in a flight or fight scenario on the water?

Particularly notable performances include Jeff Kober (as to always be expected), the salty source of unease which juxtaposes well against the frivolities of youth, especially wealthy unbridled youth. Also worth mentioning is the always quirky offbeat humor of Matty Cardarople (Stranger Things) and the shadowy ominous performance of John Bellman as Bobby, Jeff Kober's first mate on this boat destined for hell it would seem. We follow this cast on a unplanned adventure into deep waters where no one can hear their screams and their their wallets can't pay asking price for survival. It's definitely a fun watch especially for those who secretly always wanted to see the popular kids have a dose of reality.

Decent paced thriller
mumofand128 March 2022
I can't understand what is with all the poor reviews. This kept a good pace and acting was good. Characters were interesting. I enjoyed it.

It's obvious it's a B film and not on budget for anything spectacular but it's entertaining.

Please, don't do it. This is a boat wreck of a movie, and not once did I find myself particularly interested. Only one character does a goos job, and thats the older Gortons Fisherman look a like dude. A seriously bad movie. Don't do it.

Well my comprehensive scorecard got deleted because stupid IMDB doesn't save drafts...

So this one just gets the rating and that's it. I'm not rewriting all that crap.

This one isn't good even a solid character actor like Kober can't save it.

They missed the boat
nogodnomasters26 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Four teens miss the ferry for block island and charter a local out of New London. Things get out of hand on the boat.

The film makes New Londoners appear to hate outsiders. That was not my impression when I was there, although they do look down on folks who are not from that area, typical New England snobbery. Now the town does fight as half the town roots for Yankees and the other half Red Sox. Bars are divided accordingly. We did get background on two characters and that was about it as most of the characters were shallow.

Guide: F-word. Near sex. No nudity.

Don't watch it!
jason_riddle1128 December 2021
It drove me nuts and made be cringe through the whole movie. Acting was bad or atleast the script was. The cgi was horrible and clearly was fake! The only descent thing about it was the makeup from the cuts and bruises. I felt like I was watching the movie scream all over again. Moments were there could have been something there was ruined by ridiculous unrealistic outcomes. The whole movie seemed like it was written and directed by a 10 year old. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone!

Ridiculous
Christopher3701 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This could have been a really good movie but the characters were so stupid, annoying and unlikable that I didn't care if any of them died. And there was a weird moment where the sole girl lifted up her entire dress to show the boat driver her goods just because her drunken friend told her to do it to show her appreciation for the boat ride lol. Who does that?!

I could see if she was a drunken airhead party girl type, but her character was a level headed girl just out of rehab so when she did that I was baffled by it. And this was way before any means of threat happened to them. It just came off weird and random and right after she did it, I was hoping she'd be the first to be offed.

Then there's the many bad decisions made by these idiots. They jump off the boat with only a half mile to shore but instead decide to scream for help so the killers bring them back on board lol. Why?!

And the long haired joker who had a shotgun to him by the old guy at one point was thrown behind him and had a clear and easy chance to jump his old butt and grab the rifle from him, but he just stays down on the floor while the old guy steers the boat. Please! Fight for your life you idiot.

Then the idiot's friend has a clear shot to the other killer but instead goes down below to check on his girlfriend, dropping the gun when he gets to her. But why not eliminate the threat and shoot the killer first you moron?! He had a clear shot to him and it made no sense.

By the end when the same idiot picks up the shotgun again and goes all Rambo with blood on his face, torn shirt and finally blows the killer away I was too busy laughing from all the absurdity of this movie to care.

With better writing, better actors and more believable actions by the characters, this really could have been a great film.

I remember way back in 1989 seeing "Dead Calm" with Nicole Kidman and enjoying the suspense and acting of that film. It's a similar cat and mouse fight for survival on a boat and this movie could have been as great as that one. If you're looking for that kind of suspense film, definitely check that out over this as it's the same type of plot but done so much better.

Intriguing story, not a bad watch
OneAnjel29 March 2022
Right away you notice the film is low budget. Such a film shouldn't be reviewed as if it's a Hollywood blockbuster. When you rent a Chevy you don't then leave a bad review because it wasn't a BMW. It's also based on a true story. How much is unsure, but rating a true story low because you didn't like the script is just an uneducated gesture. This is a horrific ordeal that someone decided to make into a film. I admit, it reminded me a bit of watching a song-writer singing his own lyrics before a true vocalist gets behind the mic. If anyone doesn't understand this analogy, most song-writers are horrible singers but they have to sometimes send a demo of how the song is supposed to sound. Then the professional gets a hold of it and it turns to gold. So yes, If it was made in 1984 starring Jodi Foster it would have been much better, granted. But for what it is, this isn't a bad watch. I also don't remember if the movie actually mentions that Block Island is in an area called Block Island Sound. So the second title, Dead Sound, was probably an attempt to play off of the location. If you can get beyond the low-level acting and directing to actually see and feel the story, you will enjoy this film. Unfortunately, it probably attracts younger people who don't have that ability.

Writing and acting ugh
welhof116 April 2022
I'm not talking about the acting per se, I mean the actions the actors made. No one would behave like they did in these circumstances. I rolled my eyes so many times. People do not make these decisions! His friend at the end in the boat? Lol. The captain was the only good actor in it and he seemed so out of place in this one. I've never seen a movie that was based on a true story embellished so much.

Best movie in history with a < 4 of 10 on IMDB
ramair35014 September 2020
I was browsing my Amazon Prime videos, and sure enough came across this film. It sounded fun, and so despite the reviews, I gave it a try. And I'm glad I did ... no spoilers, but it is a totally fine film for what it is, and I consider it "mission accomplished" for a lower budget movie that conveys a reasonable sense of drama and fear.

Will it win Academy Awards? Of course not. But I thought it was well filmed and the acting was decent. My wife (also usually very critical) also enjoyed it and we both give it the "worth watching" thumbs-up if you are looking for a decent (not "amazing thrill ride", but just more of a low key) non-supernatural scary / thriller on the water.

As much as I'm tempted to overcompensate on the score to "average out" the bad reviews (which at the time of writing are less than 4 out of 10), I will be honest and give it a 7 out of 10 in good faith. Go in expecting a decent "B" movie and you'll enjoy it ... certainly worth a late-night watch.

It's pretty rough
griffiths-brent22 September 2020
If you think good actors should yell as they take a few wind up steps and then run towards a man pointing a gun their way then once shot stand still for a second then hop backwards a few times before falling over like grandma bouncing off her back on trampoline just to seem less-old to the kiddies, then I've found the perfect movie for you.

If you don't like movies that have been filmed by a kid who found his grandpa's old RCA camcorder, the one that took full size VCR tapes, with a total actors budget of 'we'll let you shower in the gymnasium changerooms' ( oh ya! It looks like it was filmed on of those elementary school stages that are attached to the gym) then you should probably just skip this one.

Plot - 3 Acting - 2 Set design - 0 Cinematography - 1 Editing - 0 Score - 3

Super Bad
damorejj9 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Decided to name this review after another party movie that was much better than this one. This film is one of the worst movies I've seen in many years. This may have been inspired by true events, but I'm sure those true events didn't happen like this. First of all, the acting was bad, just horrible. The script was really bad writing. And some things were just ridiculous.

Unlikable characters...I wanted Nicky to die so badly. So it takes about 80 minutes by boat to get from New London, CT to Block Island. The 4 main characters get to New London just in time to miss the last ferry. It appears to be mid afternoon at this point. They go into a bar for what seems to be about 20 minutes tops and Bobby tells them that the fishing boat they're paying for a ride on will leave in 30 minutes.

The bar scene with the so called "hookers" was absolutely ridiculous and pointless. Added nothing to the story at all.

So now it's still mid to late afternoon and they get on the fishing boat. Trouble starts when Ashley asks to go to the bathroom to pee. She literally just used the bathroom 20 minutes ago in the bar. Things go south from there and next thing you know it's night. This is supposed to be an 80 minute boat ride!! In the summer, they would be there before sun down.

Later in the movie Jake is left to drown in the Long Island Sound as the boat leaves him but he miraculously shows up after treading water for HOURS and has the energy to start a fire and stab someone with a harpoon. Cmon already....utter ridiculousness.

And at the end one of the friends goes on a rescue mission wearing a plastic Viking hat and keeps it on through a shoot out! Who wrote this crap?!

Why can't we just get in the running car??
PunkynPye18 February 2024
That insurance commercial is based on movies that are just like this, where hot looking young people do the most ridiculous things, for the stupidest reasons. It makes you want to jump through the tv, grab the idiots by the shoulder, and shake the crap out of them. Given the choice, I would watch that commercial over and over and over again, for an hour and a half, rather than this stood movie itself. It really and truly is that bad. My husband wanted to finish it, or I would have turned it off. Every decision they make is annoyingly unrealistic, and I finally found myself rooting for the bad guys.
