H.P. Lovecraft is one of the all-time great horror writers, but one place he always seemed to come up a little short was in characterization; for Lovecraft, the characters were often little more than a necessary evil to advance his otherworldly stories. So it was a very pleasant surprise to see that this adaptation of Lovecraft's 'Cool Air' kept everything that made the short story so memorable, but also added a touch of humanity. Daamen Krall (as Doctor Munoz) and Adrienne Wilkinson (as Agatha Howard) make their characters not just a bit tragic, but also easy to relate to and gently likable- there's far more investment in their fates than there was in Lovecraft's original. Emotionally resonant without being cloying.
