Misery, Exploited
smatson12329 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I'll admit it; I chose it in Netflix fully aware of the content of this film, and for the most part, it lived up to its promises. Now, gentle reader--do you need yet another reminder that unadulterated evil runs unchecked in those who live among us--and that justice is often not served?

As a documentary, Monster is accurate and believable: a naive 19-year-old girl with a sketchy job history and a fantasy of traveling the world accepts a reportedly well paying and temporary job as tutor to a young boy at a home secreted away in the tangled underbrush of New Zealand's outback. The fact that her new employer is a hermit, seems not to have bathed or shaved in years, and has several locked gates separating the homestead from the nearest road an hour away, fails to register as cause for alarm. After a month of friendly bonding, the abuse begins..sexual, and more. Now pregnant and literally barefoot, the girl becomes a captive both physically and psychologically. As with all victims of Stockholm Syndrome, she comes to believe, even in brief trips to town, that escape is impossible and if attempted would lead to the murder of her family.

The tension and suspense as the story is told by accomplished NZ actors in a memorable, lush setting, are powerfully effective, and the viewer gets just enough information about the sadistic Bill Cornelius to understand the strength of his control over both the protagonist and other victimized women who came before and after her. But questions stubbornly hang in the air. Why is Bill's son seemingly oblivious to the abuse, even as bruises appear, his new friend gets pregnant, and then mysteriously loses the baby? Why is it surprising to the boy that she would want to leave, as she is forced into more and more horrific situations and he has seen three other tutors come and go? And why does it take the New Zealand courts almost four years to start to bring Cornelius to trial once the abused woman finally goes public thirty years later--by which time the man was mentally incompetent?

Photos of the participants in the original kidnapping and a final interview with the victim bring the story to life. But with a better fleshed out story, the public would better empathize with other kidnapped and abused women who fail to run when they can, and live decades hiding secrets that need to be brought into the open. If the film had provided that insight, it would have risen above exploitation and sensationalism and provided a genuine public service.

Review the Movie, not the Subject Matter
Bill84630 June 2019
Can't believe the low scores from people criticising the girl's decisions and actions, rather than critiquing the movie. Its not the greatest film I've seen, but its a documentary for goodness sake.

Presumably the same people would give "Titanic" a low score because the ship sank.

No Hero
apkeeble5 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This may sound like victim blaming ,but it what it is. This girl had several opportunities to escape . How can you be so brave to go in the middle of nowhere with some grizzly looking caveman ,have consensual sex with him ,then in 2 weeks become so terrified to even attempt to escape. The nurse was too bitter to ask for help, really? As bitter as the man beating and raping you? I think not. She stood outside a police department. Did nothing. She was inside the post office. Did nothing . She went home to her mother and said she would tell him she wasn't going back and "Sweet talked" into going back!! She used the excuse of his son to continue staying with him, but when she was free ,she wouldn't help the boys mother to save the boy and his brother. 23 -28 ?? Years later she files a report and her reason for waiting was simlpy bc SHE felt safe while being married but now that her husband is dead ,she fears this beast again? Are you kidding me? 9 more women suffered because of her , and to me that makes her the monster! This woman made me sick at my stomach.

A Class True Movie film
hunsletramone20 December 2015
Watched this little gem on Netflix. i have seen many a good true movie film , this is up there with the best of the true movie films.Well directed and great acting by everyone involved. They all played their part well. Only sad thing was this was a true movie. You wonder why Heather Walsh the lady prisoner , did not escape earlier , but all is explained well enough throughout the film. Sorry if i have spoiled anything in saying that.

Filmed in New Zealand which looks a beautiful place , so some nice scenery in the film too.Seen many a blockbuster that's been disappointing , this one can teach them how to make a film on fraction of the money of some crash bang wallop so called big films.

True and Frightening

A victim of kidnapping and sexual abuse narrates this documentary telling her story of fear and helplessness that lasted more than 20 years. Her constant fear finally led her to reveal the insidiousness of her captor in order for her to attempt to live a somewhat normal life.

the power of fear.
lindajanedurkin9 November 2019
David douel obviously never been in an abusive relationship of any kind(thankfully). The trauma some of these victims go through . Their abusers could literally get them to believe anything. They could know they are going to die if their captor/abusive partner has told them to stand on hot burning coals bare foot.they will do. Fear has conditioned them to be at his whim..fear true fear is an awful thing. Sad that others feed off it for their own entertainment at the detriment of others.putting all that aside great film.

Something is missing from this story
sherwoodq2 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
She had many opportunities to escape. When she finally did escape she thought only of herself. What was the reason she didn't report this monster to police? Makes me wonder. Did she care that other women would be used and abused? How many more young women would become victims because she stayed silent? What about the boy this monster was raising. When the monster's ex wife came begging for help to save her son from the monster what happened? Our victim became strong in her resolve. Refused to help the ex wife and mother. Threw her off the property in fact. What happened to her makes me sick. What she did after her escape was totally selfish and heartless. Hero? I think not.

A very sick movie
ashpan030615 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing in this movie makes any sense. 1) Why did the girl go with a not-very-pleasant-looking middle-aged-man out in the wilderness? 2) Why did she not escape , having had numerous opportunities? 3) Often, even though she could not physically escape, she could have at least complained to someone... the storekeeper, the doctor ... anybody on the road ! 4) And when she finally does escape... she does not bother lodging any complaint with the police. 5) And -- this is the most irritating bit -- she complains after 23 years, !! Not only is the movie stupid but exploitative, trying to give some kind of perverse , sadistic delight to viewers. The actress looks l& acts like a moron and the actor like the monster The woman whose real life story this is supposed to be, speaks like a dimwitted person. A very sick movie !!

Are you kidding
Dave_douell1 September 2018
This girl had serious psychological issues before she ever met this guy. This really takes Stockholm syndrome to the crazy level. I can't believe that's why she stayed. Part of her wanted to stay, there's no other explanation. I could understand if she was twelve maybe believing the things he threatened her with. All the opportunities she had to get away and didn't take and then telling us she was always plotting how to get away on foot!! She didn't want to get away.

Spoiler alert
tetyanagann4 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
While the story is true, the movie shows many chances she had to leave. After all, the place was only " 30 ml/ 50 km distance " FROM CIVILIZATION " - that was one of the opening lines in movie. She had all the supplies she needed. She could have left any time she was ready. It's only 50 -60 km to a nearest phone which is less than 12 hour walk for a trained person or 24 for untrained. Either way the movie and her story didn't make sense to me.
