Shanthi wants Romesh to explore what his life could have been if he'd grown up in Sri Lanka, and in particular what career path he could have taken. To complicate matters, Romesh must also look after his 12-year-old cousin Krishna, who is actually the more grown-up of the two. Following a dangerous attempt at becoming a tuk-tuk driver on the streets of Jaffna, he finds out that working in a busy tourist hotel with his young cousin is an equally stressful experience. To make up for it, Romesh arranges for Krishna to do some Kandyan dancing, which becomes much more public than he anticipated.

Shanthi asks Romesh to fulfil a dream of hers and see him perform in a Sri Lankan Tamil drama. Despite a lukewarm reception on set, Romesh decides he could do a better job. He ignore the requests of his mum to take cooking lessons and climb Mount Sigirya, and spends the week trying to create his own Sri Lankan movie. A movie that ends up involving a cast of snake charmers, dancers, his Uncle Ragu and a dwarf internet sensation.

Shanthi uses Romesh's trip to try to settle a long standing bugbear - trying to get him to lose weight. She has entrusted this task to his Uncle Rubaharan, who introduces him to the ancient Sri Lankan martial art known as angapora, which sees Romesh being put through his paces by a 14-year-old martial arts expert. Whilst in the area, Romesh also visits his mother's home which has been taken over by a religious sect, but this is mere respite between having a traditional Ayurvedic enema and joining the hunter-gatherer tribe of the Veddas, to go on one of the most bizarre hunts ever witnessed.

Romesh is reunited with his cousin Krishna at a cowboy ranch in Colorado, where Shanthi wants Romesh to use the experience to teach Krishna how to become a man. Romesh struggles to make his horse do anything and as a result gets demoted to increasingly awful ranch hand duties, while Krishna spends the day riding. Romesh's final job is a terrifying encounter administering medical treatment to a totally unrestrained alligator.

Shanthi heads out to Sri Lanka to join Romesh and find out what he's learnt. Romesh does his best to bluff his way through as a tour guide before the pair of them try to join the family business of arranged marriage brokers. In exchange for Romesh having a go at a traditional Sri Lankan sports day, he asks his mum to take part in a rap video with local Sri Lankan rap group Colombo MBZ. Having now spent six weeks in his mother's homeland, the real issue is now whether Romesh will come clean about all the things he hasn't done. Can he make it up to her? And, most importantly, will he be able to make her proud of him?

Romesh and Shanthi kick off their trip in Tampa, Florida, where they have arranged to meet Romesh's cousin Pratheep, who has set up an all-American week. Romesh starts the trip as his means to go on by trying to get rid of his mother at a Floridian retirement park, but Shanthi is having none of it. Pratheep's first activity is to get Romesh to take part in a spicy food competition - one that involves downing a vomit-inducing concentrated Naga chilli soup.

Romesh really wants to spend quality time with his mother Shanthi. Last week, whilst he was in Mexico, she had been spending time with her long lost relatives the De Silva family in LA. It turns out, to Romesh's surprise and annoyance, that Shanthi has got on very well without him in their time apart. So much so that she is on the road to fulfilling her life-long dream of being a movie star with plans to meet with a local Agent.
