It's great

I just love Chewing Gum". it's funny surprising and very very charming. The best thing from UK since Mistfits. I was wondering on how the script writer managed to talk the main actress into doing all these crazy thing until I realized that it was the same person. Michaela Coel has a great future in front of her. She is really funny.

British Comedy for the 21st Century
bradley-trent17 April 2017
This show could have been ruined by a heavy hand on the Director's controls, but it perfectly threads the gap between a bleak-and-gritty portrayal of London's working class (which it is not) and a zany, Poly Anna Utopia where's everything's perfect and nothing is permanent (which it also is not.) The lead actress, creator, and writer, Michaela Coel, is also spot on, ticking all the right boxes of "Hot," "Cute," "Silly," "Vulnerable," and -- yes -- even a deep-seated "Intelligent" with her character. She reminds of classic comediennes like Lucille Ball and pre-political-insanity Jenny McCarthy. I hope Netflix gives several more seasons.

funny and hilarious

This story is humorous and pleasing. For people who comment and believe that this show is black stereotypes, no...it isn't. It's about issues of about religious persecution and how that effect our society today. It's about relationships and just trying to have an open mind during the most life changing moment in your life. I hate in black shows everything is always a stereotype, so if Tracy was into black guys and was just like her friend then it would be normal? No, it would still be about stereotypes. Tracy is a girl whose finally discovering herself in a time that you should have. Just because the actress is black doesn't change the issue. Dang it's like people can't become satisfy unless they stereotype every show with a black face in it.

I want more please!

Ever since I saw the advertisement trailer on the Television it grabbed my attention. I never got round to watching it for some reason but when I did I was so happy. It's a stand out show to me. Great Comedy! No matter what others say I love the show. It holds something fresh and the characters are so likable. Yes the content is rude and not suitable for certain ages, but isn't that part of the humour? No one has said no to something a little inappropriate I hope is continues for at least one or two more seasons because E4 would be lost without it. Michaela Coel has proved herself to be a great attribute towards modern entertainment!!!

Really enjoying this so far! Simple, uncomplicated fun!
Gemmasaysso4 November 2015
Simple, light comedy, with toilet humour, sex jokes and filthy laughs! You end up loving the. character and her hapless boyfriend. You find yourself rooting for them both. I can't wait to see what's next for them, great comic timing and chemistry from them when they are in scenes together.

The ex is also hilarious! I'd love more set pieces with Connor, Tracey, and the ex! The actress/writer is clearly talented throwing herself unashamedly into physical slapstick situations. You have to laugh out loud during the opening recap when Connor is shoved into nearby grundon esq bins!

I've reached episode 5 already, and I would recommend it as totally relaxing, uncomplicated and funny viewing. I would love another series.

More please!

Brilliant
danzom77724 November 2015
This TV series is humorous and utterly brilliant. The mix of religion, early twenties life, and lessons of life, make this TV series unique and highly entertaining for youngsters of my age (22).

It is such a feel-good series to watch, but with a mere tease of six episodes, more needs to be released. Having just watched the last episode, I can tell that there is easily at least another two seasons of unique material for me to enjoy. Every episode so far has made me laugh out loud, and has definitely made me feel good about myself. Worryingly, some I could even relate to.

Looking forward to another season - here is hoping the writers read this and release it.

Finding a diamond stuck to the sole of my shoe.

This programme fell quite literally out of the blue. I had just finished watching Dirk Gently's and found myself at a loose end... Then I clicked on a recommended programme link and my fate was sealed...

What followed was tears, OMGs, sheer blinckages, head shakes, WTFs and then unadulterated love... The cast, the setting, the background and more than anything, the sheer balls to the wall, all out storytelling.... Frack me, I'm at a loss for words...

Hilarious... Excellent.

I was seeing Chewing Gum on Netflix for quite some time and I was very reluctant to start even one episode. I thank God for making me see the first episode, 200% comedy.

Michaela Coel - Very talented, beautiful and lovely person.

Danielle Walters - Very pretty and talented, wish everyone gets friend like her. Robert Lonsdale - Cute, handsome, funny. Shola Adewusi - OMG LOL... Unlimited fun Susan Wokoma - OMG LOL... Unlimited fun

Totally worth watching. I saw 3 season back to back twice, in 3 days.

I thought i would hate this but decided to give it a go!! I was pleasantly surprised. The characters in the series were all very strong and brought so much to each episode. Its a shame it ended so abruptly as i feel there is a lot more they could bring to the show!! Well worth the watch!!

Has potential, but could be better
oostveen14 January 2019
I started watching Chewing Gum with the expectation of a quirky series like The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. What i got was sadly a bit of a miss. Unlike Kimmy Schmidt where both Kimmy and all the side characters are charming, I don't seem to connect with Tracey and she is the main character! Instead episodes leave me wondering about Candice & Aaron, the antics of Candice's nan, mean gay Ronald and Tracey's sheltered sister.

Also unlike Kimmy Schmidt where the quirky worldstrange views help fuel the charm of the series, here the quirkyness of Tracey just seems cringy. From her having her first kiss and licking conners eyeball and nose to season 2 where she is drunkly twerking in the shower of a homeless shelter. Its all too over the top. The idea of the series really had potential to me. But sadly it isn't excecuted all that well.

Above Average
coles_notes6 September 2022
Written and created by Michaela Coel, Chewing Gum follows Tracey (Coel) a young adult in London now questioning her long term, very religious abstinence based relationship with her boyfriend and begins exploring her options and herself. Funny, random, and definitely created with Coel's specific vision, the series had me smiling throughout and a few laughs, but just as often confused or awkward feeling in a way that definitely felt on purpose. Most of the characters in this are definitely characters, in that they're a bit exaggerated and unreal, but I still had fun with it. The writing is unique, often compared to Fleabag with the 4th wall breaks directed to the camera, and the directing is fine for this style single camera sitcom. The music was fun as well, much also written by Coel. Would recommend her other series I May Destroy You over this for more of her work, but this is a much different (and much lighter hearted) show worth some good chuckles.

I mean it is what it is
foxtrotmarie13 February 2019
There are funny moments and a lot of the characters are people you enjoy watching. The humor is often overdone which either works wonderfully or not at all. There is a 'plot,' in the loosest sense of the word and not too much character development. It jumps around a lot and is great if you want a light show with crude humor but it did not keep my attention at all.

I wanted this to be good...
RanjK1 August 2020
The main actress might be good at acting and has potential for being really funny, but the shows story is just awful, so stereotypical and often even disgusting, that it hurts. I have never met christians like this before (not saying there aren´t any at all), cause the majority of people in big denomination isn´t that culty, pushy and dogmatic but she makes it out to be just based on her limited experience. The story of a young woman, switching from one extreme to another awful one, is probably her own and its to damn cringe and ignorant for my taste.

How can a show that is so adult in nature be so sweet and pure at the same time?
shannonpendergrass26 February 2019
Tracey is adorable. Even her fundamentalist Christian mother is adorable - how is every person on this show so fabulously flawed yet so endearing? I cannot wait for season 3, and I hope the addition of a writers' room doesn't take away this show's charm. <3

Quirky, fun, humor!

This show had such a brilliant vibe and pace to it. It was such an offbeat and quirky comedy and I loved every second of it. It certainly cheered me up through tough times. I wish they made a 3rd season.

I am watching the show again for the second time but in German. It's such a shame that she has decided to close the chapter for this book . I was hoping for more, perhaps even 5 seasons but oh well .

Not the worst, but could be better.
emaiuside5 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The main character development is too slow, I lose some interest in the show because she is constantly reviewing the past and emotions but always having a passive way dealing with it, not trying to be pretentious here, but it will be better to make her more intriguing and complex, I know that maybe the protagonist is written to be more of an inducible type of person and she stands in certain moments, but then, like I've said, she constantly review her emotions and second- guessed herself and the girl are stuck in it. She is romantic self-centered and this is not a bad thing itself but it would be a lot better if she has some other concerns in life. What catches is the antagonist' life, here we see some more developed character with more interesting things going on, like the old lady and the mothers' ones, the mother of the guy is one of my favorites too, even her friend is more interesting, the show itself is not bad, strong antagonist', aesthetic is really pretty, but the protagonist girl, oh boy, she has charisma, but I don't watch the show because of her anymore and I probably will continue to watch because of the antagonists.

People find this funny?
klsumnell11 July 2020
This was suggested to me by Netflix after finishing something else. I wanted something lighthearted to watch. The first couple of episodes I did have a little bit of a giggle although finding it confusing at the same time. I continued to watch it and each episode I found less and less funny and more and more crude and disgusting. A lot of it is just unnecessary filth and I'm very surprised it has a 7.7 rating on IMBD! I finished the 2 series only because I'd invested the time and couldn't decide on anything else to watch. It's not for me I'm afraid.

Some negative allusions towards South Asians
Madiha204 January 2020
In the first episode, there is a South Asian woman in a restaurant who says or does pretty much nothing in the scene, except that Tracy pulls off her headscarf by mistake and then puts it back on her incorrectly, wrapping the woman's face. In the second episode, there is another South Asian woman who says or does absolutely nothing in the scene except that she is wearing a headscarf and Tracy is afraid that the woman is giving her a condemning look when in fact she could be looking over at the loud and blabbering customer who has just walked into the pharmacy and is describing sexual acts in a loud and explicit way. Also in the first episode, Tracy's sister (who is portrayed as sexually repressed) asks Tracy to not go to a party and instead play Ludo with her. The sister is holding a board game named Ludo. While a computerized version of this game has recently become popular, the board game has been popular among South Asians for a long time and was in fact derived from a game popularized by the Mughal emperors in India. On one hand, I can appreciate the struggle of Chewing Gum's main character with overly intrusive sexual thoughts as a result of the judgmental and restrictive culture that she grew up in, and her lack of sex education which resulted in her having unsafe sex and running to the pharmacy after the fact. When Tracy's religious boyfriend threw a book at her chest while she hadn't even touched him, it alluded to the violence often suffered by those who rebel against religious and cultural norms. However, just because Tracy's character is a Black, Christian girl, that doesn't make it ok for the show to direct negative puns at South Asian women who have done nothing wrong except wear headscarves in a place like London where South Asians and Muslims are a ethnic and religious minorities. This also creates the false stereotype of Muslims being South Asians, when in fact there are many Black Muslims.
