DeFeos Turning In Their Graves ...
ktaylor-868-2426199 July 2016
Oh, my. As a professional reviewer and someone who writes horror and consumes any and every bit of horror out there, it breaks my heart to post such a bad review. If you don't know how much of ones' self goes into the writing of a script and then, the miracle of, getting it produced, I hate to burst the bubble of anyone with a dream.

Sadly, every single person involved in this horrible project must never - I repeat, NEVER - quit their day job.

If only I could have given it less than a star.

Sadly, I confused this with a REAL industry feature - Amityville: The Awakening - which will be out in 2017.

Please don't do the same! kT ~xXxo™

Stop Me Daddy

Warning: Spoilers
The feature opens up showing us what appears to be the murders at Amityville. It shows a toy monkey with the clapping cymbals, a common feature to horror films. A slightly dysfunctional family is getting together for Dad's (Mark Popejoy) 50th birthday and sure enough he gets the toy monkey as a gift. It claps, he goes crazy as his dead father instructs him to kill his family. Apparently the monkey is the cause, but how and why remains a clouded mystery that perhaps will come out in the prequel. After paying for a red filter, some buzzing noises, and buying a monkey toy at the flee market, the budget couldn't afford any actors. The acting, script, dialogue, sound, soundtrack, and camera angles (what was that floor angle?) were less than par...to be polite. Evil comes in all forms, sometimes as a bad movie. Guide: F-word. Brief sex. Male rear nudity.

The Amityville Legacy: Make it stop, please
Platypuschow22 November 2017
When a vintage clapping monkey toy from the original Amityville house is gifted to a father he becomes possessed and turns on his family.

Basically the same general concept as every other Amityville film.

The difference here is the film was made on a budget comparable with the value of 2 Freddo Bars & a Twinkie.

Awfully shot, stupid light effects, poor audio quality and an instantly forgettable cast there isn't much to credit the movie on.

Just when you think all these Amityville cashins can't get worse they do.

Stick to the originals or better yet don't bother.

The Good:

It's fairly short

The Bad:

Ridiculous light effects

Its just plain terrible

Things I Learnt From This Movie:

When an inanimate toy monkey is the most charismatic part of the cast you know you have a problem

Just for this movie i made account to warn all
tim_onwezen25 October 2016
Okey, sometimes when i read a bad review i tend to still watch that movie so i can make up my own mind... But in this case STOP AND DON'T WATCH THIS MOVIE, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! I'm telling you nothing about this movie is good!In fact i would go as far as to say it is as bad as catwomen. Besides the bad acting and horrible quality of the movie itself, its just not fit to be in The Amityville series(Movieseries) seeing as how they go so far of the beaten track story wise. Very very bad story line , actors are horrible and direction and quality suck ass.

Again you have been warned. so don't waste 2 hours.

Actually, it's really rather not good.
Steal-No-Evol19 August 2016
Bad enough to warrant a review.

It's 58 minutes long, with another 8 minutes of slowly dragging credits(but that features a My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult song, so that boosts this flick up one star).

There's no budget.

There is a plot.

There is a drone used for some footage.

Watching this for free is still a waste of time unfortunately. If you like bad movies, this isn't one for you. God, the Asylum did a better Amityville movie than this. THE FCKING ASYLUM.

This is a bad movie, there's no shame in that, it's just really really bad.

The worst film with the "Amityville" name
pageboy23 June 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is really bad, and when I say bad, I mean really really bad, and bad in a bad way. The acting is horrendous, yet the directing and production values are even worse. How do you know a film is bad? When they take 10 minutes to roll the end credits, a really, really slow crawl in an already short film.

A horror film with less violence than a Lifetime movie, less violence than The Brady Bunch. The episode where Bobby idolized Jesse James (the one where all the Bradys are killed) was scary, especially to a young impressionable child, much like the original book, The Amityville Horror and the original movie.

The only thing connecting this film to the original Amityville is a small scale model, and a cursed toy monkey, the one that claps the cymbals, just like the one on Seinfeld, one of the toys that Jerry drugs his girlfriend to play with.

Zero violence, zero nudity. Do not be suckered in by the excellent preview.

The Best Amityville movie since the Remake
weschaisson-8455616 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Reading the other 3 reviews it is clear that the reviewers haven't actually watched the movie. This is not cool that you want to sabotage someone's film. Here is a real review of The Amityville Legacy.

Amityville Legacy pays incredible homage to the older Amityville films. In particular It's About Time, A New Generation, and Dollhouse, which were all released in the early to mid-nineties. This film definitely has the same feel as those films, but with a bit more spunk. Like those films Legacy doesn't take place in the Amityville house, however, we do get to see the Amityville house in the opening scene. The opening scene is fantastic, we get to see a retelling of the DeFeo shooting. Even though it's only 2 minutes I feel that it's crucial to the film and it's very atmospheric. Incredible exterior shots of the Amityville house and I really like the red tinted lighting used in the interior scene because it flows smoothly into the opening credit sequence.

The legacy's story focuses on the Janssen family 4 girls and 1 boy. Mark is turning 50 and his kids have come home to visit him. His daughter Julia gives him an antique toy monkey because he had one as a child. However, this toy monkey is the same one the little girl in the Defoe house had under her bed when hiding from her brother before he killed her in the opening sequence. Somehow that evil transferred to the antique toy monkey. Once Mark receives his birthday gift he starts having blackouts and seeing his father who is now pushing him to kill has family.

Some really fun characters in Legacy. With the four sisters, we have Jennii who is introduced to us drinking and driving. She's witty, funny and just a bad ass. She doesn't like kids or the zoo. I love her look throughout the film, from her hair to her clothes she just stood out. Jennii Caroline did a great job bringing a lot of charisma to the character and delivering the dialogue perfectly. Julia is the more serious sister that takes care of her brother and sisters after her mother's death. Julia Farrell (Silent Night, Bloody Night 2) did a fine job working with the rest of the cast. She didn't overshadow anyone even though she is kind of the main character. She definitely gave a sister vibe and had a great connection with the other three ladies playing her sisters. Then we have Breana who is a bit of a wild child. Sleeping with her boyfriend under her father's roof while her father and grandmother are present. Breana Mitchell played the character off as sweet and innocent but you could see there was an inner bad girl. I found her to be likable and very enjoyable to watch throughout the film. Her smile lit up the screen. Brittany the pregnant sister is very innocent and kind. She puts other people's feelings ahead of her own and she's very selfless. Brittany Dailey played the part very convincingly and had some very dramatic scenes throughout the film. Their brother Tony is kind of sassy, but a good guy. He's a very relatable character, especially for any same sex couples bringing their partner home for the first time. Tony Brown did a great job with this part. He was very convincing in the scenes where he was uncomfortable with his father meeting his boyfriend for the first time. He also had a very sassy wit about him, which added to the Charisma of the character. His chemistry with his boyfriend Jade played by Jade Michael Lafont was great to watch. It was nice to see the first openly gay couple in the Amityville franchise.

Not a lot of gore in this film, but there really wasn't any need for it. Most of the murders happened at the end of the film. However the build-up is just right and really delivers in the end. All that character development and story before the final massacre really made you care for what was happening to the characters in the end. I was literally on the edge of my seat hoping that they survived. Interesting enough, this story takes place around Christmas time and in the final scene it starts to snow. I really liked that touch of snow in that final scene.

The final shot in the film really stays with you. It's very intriguing because you don't really know what happened since it cuts to the credits. I feel like the film left me wanting more, but I was satisfied with what I got. In the end, I really feel that less is more and Legacy really delivered just the right combination to make it one of the best Amityville films I have seen since the remake. I know a lot of you Amityville fans like myself have not been too fond of the most recent installments. I can say without a doubt that Legacy is the one to watch. I'm very excited to review the other five Amityville films that will be released this year. If they are half as well done as Legacy I will be happy. It makes me happy that Dustin Ferguson respects the franchise enough to put great effort into making this film so special to the fans. I want to thank all the cast and crew and everyone involved in Amityville Legacy for their great work. A high point in the franchise and I thank you.

Above-average entry in the faked part of the franchise
kannibalcorpsegrinder20 November 2020
Coming together for a family reunion, a large family finds that part of the celebrations include a treasured replica toy from their father's youth which inadvertently causes a past tragedy to come to light in a series of brutal murders that they soon realize is tied to one of the most shocking crimes in history.

For the most part, this was a pretty solid effort. One of the better elements here is the enjoyable release of the supernatural haunting on the family. Getting the heart and warmth of the family gathering for the birthday out of the way early on, the toy present he was given to him that starts everything is a rather fun idea as the scene makes for a generally creepy time with the hallucination and distorted reality. That this turns into a wholly impressive series of psychological mind-games involving him slowly being influenced by his father's spirit into an obviously unnatural yet barely acknowledged state throughout the course of the weekend. As time goes on and he gets even crazier while under the influence of the spirit, the slow dawning realization that he's knocking off the family due to that influence provides some thrilling scenes. This includes the ambush of the couple up in the bedroom or taking out the various family members as his frustrations offer up some solid scenes here. The series of chases and confrontations that appear here give this a much more rousing finish to this one which goes quite nicely with a hilariously metal finale coda to offer up a truly fun and cheesy effort which all holds the film up for the most part. There are some issues here. The main problem is the wholly unexplained matter of how he comes under the influence of his father's ghost as the acceptance is completely nonsensical. That he appears out of nowhere telling him to begin killing the family is entirely coincidental and has little about it that becomes coherent about following the toxic masculinity-spouted by his spirit. This whole reasoning is quite illogical, just like the somewhat obvious cheapness of display which covers most of this one, from the lack of being anywhere except the house or the lack of blood featured in the kills. These are the issues that bring this one down.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Violence.

By far the worst "horror" film I've seen
The_Swedish_Reviewer24 October 2016
Like others, I mistook this movie for the upcoming Amityville Awakening. This movie however is shockingly bad and amateurish produced and directed. This movie is even worse than "Amityville: It's about time" released in 1992 where a demon hides in a lamp. The plot is bad. The acting is bad. The effects are bad. Absolute everything with this movie is bad and I'm surprised the owner of the "Amityville" band including the iconic house silhouette doesn't sue the producer for destroying it. They didn't even bother to use fake ammo when the rifle went off - they used NO ammo but added a tiny "boom" afterwards. This production is nothing but a blasphemy against the whole genre.

One star is way to much.

Better Than I Expected

The Amityville Legacy (2016)

** (out of 4)

A family are getting together for their father's birthday. One of the gifts given to him is an antique monkey toy but soon afterwards the father begins to act strange. It turns out this toy was once inside the Amityville house and could be the reason for that house's curse.

THE AMITYVILLE LEGACY is a very low-budget movie from directors Dustin Ferguson and Mike Johnson. I had previously watched DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT 2 and was surprised to see how much I enjoyed it even with its various flaws. I went into this movie with very low expectations because, well, let's be honest, the AMITYVILLE series has been an awful one and there have been countless bad movies that just borrowed the title to try and make people rent/buy it.

The film here has some decent performances from the cast and I'd argue that the director's do a nice job at keeping everything movie. A lot of times horror films like this just get to be downright slow and boring but that's really not the case here. It's well-made technically and it never gets boring. So, what is the problem with the film? Well, it lasts just 69-minutes with the ending credits.

Normally I prefer movies like this to run short but honestly that's a tad bit too short because it seems like the movie is just getting started and then it's over. THE AMITYVILLE LEGACY, with that short running time, is certainly worth sitting through but it did need a bit more meat on its bones.

Amityville monkey
BandSAboutMovies16 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Did this poster just put one of those horrifying wind-up monkeys in the windows of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue? Well, that's just not fair. If this movie came out when I was seven, I would have defecated in my pants to such a level that you would be about to smell it, even nearly four decades into a thankfully feces-smell free future.

Yes, a cursed monkey is purchased from the DeFeo garage sale and makes its way across the country to Nebraska, where it wreaks havoc. If this sounds like the plot of the mid-90's Amityville films like It's About Time, A New Generation and Amityville Dollhouse, the filmmakers are very aware of those films and specifically pay tribute to them.

According to the film's official Facebook page, this movie has been acquired by Wild Eye Releasing and will soon have a new Amityville-related title, as well as a sequel called Amityville: Evil Never Dies. Is Mumm-Ra in that one? I'm not sure, but do you know who is? Mark Patton, who played Jesse in the criminally underrated second A Nightmare on Elm Street film.

This was directed by Dustin Ferguson, who also made Nemesis 5: The New Model, Silent Night, Bloody Night 2: Revival, a remake of Die, Sister, Die! and is now working on a remake of Umberto Lenzi's Ghosthouse. The sheer chutzpah of that last move either makes me love this guy or despise him. Don't screw that one up.

Somehow - well, Ferguson has worked on their music videos - this movie has "Spooky Tricks" by My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult on its soundtrack. That's more than I can say for most Amityville movies.

A Cheap, Low-Budget Production
Uriah439 April 2024
Forty years after the murders at the Amityville house, a small group of family members travel to see their father "Mark Janson" (Mark Popejoy) at his home in Nebraska to celebrate his fiftieth birthday. Naturally, since it's his birthday, they all bring gifts with one in particular being a toy monkey that was picked up at a gift store in Amityville a few says before. Unfortunately, as it so happens, this toy monkey was taken from the Amityville house and is possessed by the evil spirit that dwelt there. To that effect, the spirit soon manifests itself to Mark and tries to convince him to kill as many of his family members as he can. Now, rather than reveal any more, I will just say that this was a cheap, low-budget production which directly suffered as a result with a poorly written script, wooden acting, and very little suspense to show for it. In short, I don't consider this to be a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, and I have rated it accordingly.

Bringing the series back to its roots
ericallen201023 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
The Plot: A cursed antique toy monkey from the original DeFeo home wrecks havoc and possesses a father after being gifted during an annual family reunion.

My Review: With the recent glut of DTV AMITYVILLE titles coming out in the wake of the filmed in 2014 but not yet released AMITYVILLE: THE AWAKENING, one may be quick to judge this film as a mock-buster trying to capitalize on an upcoming theatrical film. However, this entry in the series is more in common with the 90s AMITYVILLE sequels. Though the run-time is short (around 70 minutes), the film wastes no time establishing characters for the various family members who will befall the curse of the possessed object. Though not a gory film by any means, it is violent and includes some shocking deaths for characters you end up caring about. The ending reminded me of the middle part of AMITYVILLE 2: THE POSSESSION.

The directing and lighting of the film are top notch for an indie production including some very neat aerial shots. The acting as a whole is generally well done by the ensemble cast. Shockingly, there is no female flesh on display. However, there are scenes of male nudity (provided by Mark Popejoy and Jade Lafont). What I loved the most was the score to the film. It truly gave the film an 80s vibe. This also was the first entry in quite a while to get the DeFeo home right. As a whole, this entry was way more enjoyable than the recent AMITYVILLE ASYLUM, AMITYVILLE PLAYHOUSE, AMITYVILLE DEATH HOUSE, and the dreadful AMITYVILLE: VANISHING POINT.

Final Thoughts: This obviously was made for the true fans of the AMITYVILLE series. Check it out!!!

A true legacy tribute
Realrockerhalloween1 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Now it gets back to the greatness I've been searching for after all the worthless countless sequels using the Amityville brand in name only. It takes the cursed objects, this time a chime monkey, and mixes it with the possession story involving the Defao murders. Even though the flashback contradicts the second film instead following the opening to the first.

It cuts to the Janssen family celebrating the patriarch's birthday where he receives a gift lost from childhood a chime monkey when active puts him in a trance and hypnotizes him into assassinating his family.

Each of the family members have unique personalities for once and grow as a person while they try to come to terms with the evil taking roots inside the house. The humor is spot on from the rebellious Jenny who doesn't let anyone push her around to Tony the sassy gay character not about to go back into the closet for psycho dad or not.

The suspense is back in full force with creepy stalker shots, outbursts and weird behavior from dear ole dad. My only complaint is the fire was minimum and it doesn't really have a body count or an ending. It ends before the horror true my reaches its full potential and left me disappointed. Still its the last great sequel I've seen so far to even consider cannon in my head and recommend it to long time fans.
