Such an underrated gem

Warning: Spoilers
If your thrown off by all the colors, and sugar Coated sweetness this episode has in spades, there's so much brilliance hidden inside. We learn so much about Beth, as well what may come for future seasons. With great character development, misdirection of Visual appeal, the episode is still messed up, while delivering everything u could want in the show.

Colorful visually and philosophically in stark contrast
realginger24 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this episode was quite different. Normally, you would get a subplot, main plot or if lucky the plots would cross over. This episode was different however. In stark contrast to the previous episode, the main plot was the true strength within this episode. The antics ensue as Jerry, Summer and Morty are caught in a web of lies perpetuated by Jerry to his new girlfriend, who just happens to be taking part in a hunt around the same time.

(SPOILER) This "hunt" soon becomes a battle between Morty/Summer and Jerry's new girlfriend, due to a turn of phrase where Jerry's web of lies include that the kids are xenophobic and racist towards her. This part leads to an obvious deus ex machina when said girlfriend's ex-lover appears, and they fight due to her "hunting" in his realm. The best part is how Morty acknowledges the deus ex machina, which allows them to escape.

The bad was the subplot however. The main villain is unlikable, but this is due to weak characterization. Why you might ask? Due to Beth pushing him into a pool of honey, he proceeds to incest/bestiality with the animals, and then presumes to EAT them. No, that is not a joke.

My review: Excellent main plot, with relevant humor and story line. I recommend a skip past the subplot, as it just is not interesting from my perspective.

Cannot wait for the season finale next week.

It's a good episode
ericstevenson29 September 2017
I personally didn't find this episode to be as good as most people make it out to be, but it was still nice. If nothing else, it was confusing how halfway they just abandon the Froogleland and go into mostly another plot. The best part might be Rick bonding with Beth. I guess it's hard to tell if Rick's got a heart of gold or not, but I suppose it just depends on the situation. My favorite joke from him was when he mentioned Stone Cold Steve Austin. He then realized that joke made no sense, but he was going with it anyway. I loved when the kid made fun of Morty leaving school and then questioned if he got his values right.

The scene at the very end and the very last joke in the entire episode is probably the funniest. I admit it's satisfying to see Rick get injured when it's mostly Morty. I guess the plot was just a little out of focus. It still ended up being pretty creative and I do like the jokes as always. There's this pretty good subplot where Jerry dates an alien that he later breaks up with. It's more interesting than the stuff with Beth and it does end up being relevant in the end. ***

I don't understand the rating
amarbdmi25 September 2017
This episode is clearly the one of the better ones in this season other the the first episode in my view, and it just got abysmal rating that I don't understand. Episode like 'The Ricklantis Mixup' is so bloated that no one seems to find the plot is so generic and predictable. Another episode "Vindicators 3" which is one of my favorites in this season, is clearly something that they would do in season 1 or 2, the quality and the sprite is totally the same as any episode from season 1 or 2,it also get bad ratings. I don't know who is responsible for this rating, but I have to except the fact that rick and morty has gone main stream and hopefully the writer won't abandon their creativity from season 1 or 2 and ran this show into a s*** hole in order to gratify the "new coming" main stream viewers

Not as good as the others this season, but still solid
MickandRorty24 September 2017
Don't get me wrong, I love every episode. There is not a single episode that a flat out dislike. With that said, for me this a pretty solid episode, but nothing classic.

It deserves a 10/10, as does every R&M episode. But on the R&M scale, I'd put this one as average for them.

Thought the scenes with Tommy were great. Love the voices, as always. Good work.

The WTF of Beth
petrow-3130826 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I gave this episode a 6, same as Vindicators 3, because it suffers from the same symptoms. Great ideas, most of them properly fleshed out, but many sloppy moves in writing and the whole story won't really move the characters any more forward from their current states. Harmon and Roiland like to play long games and probably they try to establish a plot line around (clone)Beth, but the start is nowhere as promising as it was for Evil Morty at the end of Season 1. Waiting for the payoff to prove me wrong.

The ABC's of making a bad episode
realmuthaf25 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This season so far has been hit or miss, and it's biased towards miss at this point, with this being one of the worst episodes of the whole show.

So, this is yet another episode dedicated to more piece of sh*t boring cheap redundant family "drama", a theme that has been prevalent in a good number of episodes this season. For the better part of the runtime Beth wants Rick to say that he was a bad father, he agrees but also points out that she herself is a sociopath. This is force-fed to the viewer for more than half of the episode. The remainder is dedicated to showing that Jerry is still a coward and an idiot, but now they actually say make him say those words, literally. I guess it's done so that the amazingly smart audience doesn't miss the idea. There are also cheap gags that are not funny and wannabe edginess with themes like incest and cannibalism, so that kids can say "WOW, THAT WAS DARK!".

I gotta love that people say that garbage like this is "character development". No, it's not character development, because nothing has developed - Beth has always been an unlikable c*nt and is now an even more unlikable c*nt, Jerry has always been a weak pathetic sh*tbag and he still is.

The ending has ambiguity whether that's the real Beth or not, but the thing is, I don't give a flying f*ck because of how repulsive that character is.

The thing is, all of it was predictable back when the promo for this episode first aired. I hope the season finale will be at least somewhat enjoyable.

P.S. Please note that I have never written reviews for individual TV series episodes, but this was so bad I had no choice. Peace out.

Beth's childhood
amindostiari27 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode had two different and fascinating storylines. Beth reviews her childhood memories, all of which show her father's vacancy, and poor Tommy, who has to eat meat to survive. Jerry eventually falls in love, but he falls in love with a hunter and this is a nuisance. The next sequence of the final credits was extremely funny and great. I love it!

"When you know nothing matters, the universe is yours"
kobedawson10 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is probably the most underrated in Rick and Morty.

So this episode is mainly focused on Beth's character, which was a great idea and changes the story moving onto Season 4. She came to the realization that she was like her father, Rick, someone who she wanted to be when she was young, but ultimately sees how terrible yet smart he is and how she already had her wish and of course, regrets it. So she has to decide whether she wants to stay and bottle up who she is, or embrace it and leave everything behind.

The subplot consists of Jerry being Jerry, which is pretty brilliant too. Jerry is obviously an easily despicable, naive and annoying character and is most likely the most hated in the fandom, but I found him to be pretty realistic and human(and childish of course). Considering the situation and mindset that he has, with being alone and not thinking for himself, he is connected with an alien who laughably is in the same situation as Jerry.

What happened? One terrible mess of an episode in a usually brilliant show...
andwarren15 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't get it.. This episode was full of attempts at humor that only made me cringe. The song "I have a poopoo in my butt" was something an awkward child would come up with. Also the basic premise of the episode - guy gets trapped in generated world and has sex with animals to produce offspring he can eat - left me feeling so embarrassed for the creators and embarrassed to be watching the show. Entire episode was a pathetic attempt to be funny by being extreme with the use of messed up sexual humor and "potty humor" for lack of a better term.

Even R&M can go too far.
weybug2 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Just started watching Rick and Morty a few weeks ago. Binged all three seasons and loved most of it. The ABC's of Beth creeped me out.

Raping muppets and eating babies was presented as a joke. That goes too far. At least it does for me. And it was not some one-off joke. They beat that drum a few times.

The second story of Jerry's new girlfriend was amusing. Sort tame really for R&M. Maybe this was supposed to balance out the episode? All it did for me was highlight how creepy and disgusting the other story line was.

Not that the episode was devoid of humor. Rick had some good lines as always. His crack about what a good adventure needed was hilarious as was his comment about hereditary cannibalism.

Rick and Morty has pushed boundaries and I have loved it. Guess there is a line for everyone and mine is somewhere near rape as a food source.
