A moving, faithful defense of the true Christian Gospel
bergerrussell12 November 2018
This film does a remarkable job of presenting what true Christianity is, showing the sharp contrasts between the biblical gospel and the modern American heresy known as the "health & wealth" gospel. While the director and the majority of those interviewed clearly take a side against these false teachings, they do so in a fair, honest, and deeply engaging way. If you consider yourself a christian, you will find this film challenging, edifying, and perhaps even convicting. If you are not a christian, there is no better film out there for giving you an accurate presentation of what true christianity is.

Best Christian documentary
sumralltim16 November 2018
This is probably one of the best Christian documentaries on the word of faith health and wealth doctrine ever made. Not only does it cover the subject of the problems with the health and wealth word of faith doctrine it also preaches the Gospel. Some of the best and most respected preachers and teachers in today's Christian world discuss and explain the danger of this doctrine and how to identify true Christianity over a false and counterfeit Christianity . This movie is a must see no matter if you are a believer in Jesus as the savior or a non believer.

The Gospel and the false gospel
danielraytyler15 November 2018
This movie accurately depicts the Gospel as presented in God's word and shows the history, absurd growth, and danger that is the Word of Faith movement and how it cannot be the true gospel. From an hour long fantastically presented gospel, to the deconstruction of this movement and testimonials of people who have come out of it. I ahave recommended this movie to a ton of people I know and will be showing it to people who are currently subscribing to this false doctrine as a means of challenging them. My wife and I have been greatly encouraged, challenged, and our faith and resolved has been strenghtened. Thank you for creating this documrntary, and we pray it will continue to send shockwaves throughout christiandom, evangelical cirlces, word of Faith adherents and the world at large. May God bless this work and continue to save the lost and further How kingdom and Glory. For Christ alone.

This is the most relevant film made in the history of America for Christians
JMason2216 November 2018
I have watched this and will watch it again. I can't stress the importance of the message in this documentary. This is the most relevant film made in the history of America for those who call themselves Christian. From the very well explained theological components to the amazing soundtrack, this project was very well done with a broad range of interviews that touch every aspect false teachings that contrast the Gospel. Bravo Brandon Kimber on the excellent work and glorification of Christ, the truth of God and His Church. I have already purchased this film and plan on having viewing parties for everyone I know!

BEST Documentary I've ever seen on Prosperity gospel vs TRUE Gospel of Christ
mikecwestwoods16 November 2018
This video is the absolute best of its kind. It very clearly shows the key differences between prosperity preachers - who are only after money and fame - and godly preachers of the Scriptures who are unwilling to compromise truth; who's only aim is to glorify God and see the lost come to Christ in saving faith as well as see true believers continue to grow in the faith.

This film is an absolute MUST WATCH for all lay church leadership, elders, and deacons. There are so many false teachings that have crept into the church and, as a result, many church members are either confused or completely unaware.

This film will help clarify what these issues are as well as bring to light the true Gospel.

Every Christian Should Watch This
lisedbrown15 November 2018
This movie is extremely well done and has a legit, theologically sound lineup. It presents a huge problem with Christianity today as not being biblical within this stream of Word of Faith/Prosperity gospel. It takes you directly into Scripture to support its viewpoint. Unfortunately, this stream of Christianity is growing and bring exported globally.

A declaration!
ekirb15 November 2018
This movie is an intense, two-hour declaration, against the American prosperity gospel and FOR the True Gospel; rooted in Christ alone. As a pastor, I would recommend this to my fellow workers and members of the Church; as a tool and rallying cry for action. As a follower of Christ, I recommend it as a resource for guarding against false doctrine and sharing with non-believers who are open to hearing what our faith is REALLY about. The prosperity gospel is a heresy that is leading people away from Christ. This documentary is a resounding response. 10/10 would recommend!

Combating heresy with Biblical truth.
ronnierukus16 November 2018
I grew up in the prosperity gospel / word of faith gospel so this film hit close to home. Praise God that he opened my eyes to this destructive, unbiblical doctrine a few years ago. This film does an excellent job of exposing how dangerous and false that belief system is. It also shines a light on the wickedness of the false teachers who peddle that nonsense. This is a film that every professing Christian needs to watch.

interesting

Examines the prosperity gospel preaching of many televangelists (spoiler: this video is against it.) the main thing that was a turn off with this documentary was that it would flip between testimonies for and against the prosperity doctrines so quickly it would be hard to tell which point of view was being promoted. the stories are told in a linear but very broken fashion so that it takes a bit to figure out what each person's story is as it is interspersed with all the others. most of those testifying are ones who came out of a prosperity church and the other side isn't represented. (on screen notes say that they chose not to comment but the film crew doesn't even talk to any of the prosperity preachers' followers.) at no point do the film makers identify themselves and their own agenda (other than anti-prosperity).

Calvinist Propaganda Masquerading as a Documentary
rodsaunders-705183 November 2019
The only reason I gave this 2 stars instead of 1 is that it was very well produced, and I have an appreciation for those things even if the content is total crap. This "documentary" on the Word of Faith was directed by Brandon Kimber who says he was raised in a Word of Faith church and converted to Calvinism a few years ago. I confirmed 23 Calvinists who were interviewed in the movie, presenting themselves as the guardians of the true gospel and the Word of Faith ministers as heretics who don't preach the gospel of the Bible. Not once in the movie did they mention that WoF people believe in salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone, nor did they mention the fact that in Calvinism Jesus only died for the elect, who were sovereignly chosen for salvation at the beginning of time, while God refuses to extend the ability to believe and repent to the non-elect, and that WoF people believe that Jesus died for everybody and anybody can believe and repent upon hearing the gospel preached. A true documentary would never have slanted these doctrinal issues in such a manner. Add to that the fact that they omitted Nabeel Qureshi's story of traveling to Bill Johnson's Bethel Church in Redding, California where he heard the gospel preached explicitly in a biblical manner, despite the frequent use of other clips of Nabeel which appeared to support the film's narrative. Very misleading. Add to that the fact that they used a clip of Benny Hinn saying that there are 9 members of the godhead, despite the fact that that happened nearly 30 years ago and he retracted that statement a week later according to an interview he did with Charisma in 1993. Add to that the fact that Brandon Kimber is on record saying that his parents got saved and were delivered from a lifestyle of drugs and partying and attended a WoF church, which would seem to contradict the message of the film that the WoF doesn't preach the gospel of the Bible. I could add more but for the sake of brevity I'll just say that there's a really good video on YouTube rebutting this flick. Just remember that when they talk about the gospel they're talking about the Calvinist version of the gospel that includes predestination.

Amazingly well done movie!!
stevenkozar15 November 2018
I almost never watch "Christian" movies but this one is really different; it's a very touching and emotional movie without being corny and manipulative. Done in a documentary style, this film is desperately needed in the confused Evangelical church. Without resorting to sensationalism or fear-mongering, this film grabs your full attention and never lets go. The editing of many different interviews and clips was a masterful accomplishment that wove everything together into a cohesive whole. I truly wish that this movie could be watched multiple times by every Christian in America. And it would be of tremendous benefit to anyone who is driving by the scene of the accident that has become the Evangelical church in America today and wants to understand the Gospel and its many counterfeits.

Captivating
Laurenemilybell15 November 2018
Can't say that I've ever seen the Gospel laid out so beautifully. The film quality is excellent. Those featured in the film are articulate and gracious, even towards those with whom they (vehemently) disagree. Costi Hinn's words about his family were incredibly kind, all while he staunchly spoke out against their manipulation of the Gospel. The takeaway was a humble, confident devotion to Scripture, holding in the balance man's depraved nature and the grace we've been given to know the Truth we've received. Within the first week it had been released, I had watched the film 4 times. I believe it is truly one of the best documentaries dedicated to biblical doctrine our generation has seen.

domen-2524715 November 2018
I have viewed it 4 times and plan on using it for an evangelism class I teach. Clear explanation of the true gospel and clear exposure of the false gospel. Outside of Ray Comfort A little heavy on the reformed theology but still very well done.

Warning: Spoilers
My husband and I loved this film. We have already watched it thrice in three different groups and will watch it again with his parents this weekend. After each viewing, everyone felt a desire to pray together.

The American Gospel succinctly describes the nature of man, the composition of man, the problem of suffering, the trinity, the humanity and deity of Christ, the means of salvation, the distortion of the gospel nationally and globally, key doctrinal differences between the Protestant and Catholic Church, the heresy of the prosperity gospel, the definitions of: love, goodness...and more. Wow! It was like a semester of Systematic Theology...in an incredibly engaging 2.5 hour film.

We will definitely watch The American Gospel again. It touches the core of your being. You feel a spectrum of emotions wider than almost anything else can evoke. I would love to see future films expanding on some of the marginal topics in the American Gospel:
  • a perspective on missions in continuation of the discussion regarding what "gospel" is being dispersed, tying in again missionaries of other movements such as Mormonism, JW, etc...and also perspectives on short term missions for local churches.
  • A presentation of how different faiths or worldviews answer fundamental questions found in sources such as The Universe Next Door and how Biblical, mono-theistic Christianity is distinct and beautiful
-A presentation of studying passages through a gospel-centered hermeneutic and encouragement to both pastors and "lay people" to read Scripture as Christ did (on Sunday we were visiting a new church and I kept looking at my Bible and back at the passage and wondered how on earth anyone could get angry about politics from Psalm 148). This was one point of the film I thought would have benefited people greatly from fleshing out. -Anything y'all decide to cover!

Exceptional, encouraging, admonishing film. Thank you!

Good, but misleading
jmccaule-1157330 November 2018
My husband and I watched this movie lasts night (11/29/2018). We both loved the first half of the film, the emphasis on the true gospel of Jesus Christ, the explanation of the catholic church vs Christianity post reformation, works and grace. The people they interviewed and sought out were high caliber (Mark Dever, J.D. Greear, Trevin Wax, Matt Chandler, Bryan Chapell just to name a few.) I learned quite a bit from just the first half of the film and give a lot of thanks for the time and focus given to the true gospel.

Where my husband and I think the film may have missed its step is in focusing on the extreme examples of the prosperity gospel, and the extreme examples of people who have had radical testimonies of conversion as well as giving their lives up for the gospel. This is an area that we both sadly have seen repeated over and over, even in the reformed church. Something I have heard Timothy Keller say in sermons is that Redeemer purposefully chooses to not display public testimonies of radical conversions because a lot of people have "ho hum" conversion stories. (raised in the church, came to faith young, no real radical experience of conversion but a gradual awakening to God's amazing grace).

We also are concerned that the emphasis is on "those people in the word and faith movement" and that there is no self-examination encouraged in mainline, reformed, evangelical Christianity. It touches briefly on this indirectly, but it doesn't flesh it out enough. I could see how this movie could help a lot of people, but I can also see how this movie can just puff up evangelicals in their own prosperity gospel theology, never seeing it in themselves or their churches or families. This scares me, cause I've seen it in solid, biblical, mainline churches and Christian families. I've even had to repent of these beliefs in myself, and I've NEVER attended a prosperity gospel church, I was always taught it is heresy.

Lastly, the examples were so extreme that they are not relatable for most Christians. There was a couple statements made that pushing Christians to have a radical faith in God and for the gospel only burns people out. YES! We absolutely would agree with this, we have experienced it from family, friends and the church and it is exhausting. BUT, where are the average joe examples of faith in Christ and the beautiful gospel that just transforms us in the mundane? I think this film skirts too closely to looking eerily similar to the sensationalism that it is decrying. Let's show how the gospel motivates us to be faithful in the everyday, and stop pumping a gospel message that although does call us to leave all for Christ, for some that might mean staying in your job, paying your bills faithfully, and raising a family that loves and adores Jesus.

Embarrassing
rabidadventure12 June 2020
I'm from a similar theological persuasion as many of the presenters. Unfortunately this film seemed to me like a 2 hour propaganda, infomercial. I think it is very popular with young nose to tail, reform theology, Christians. Many/most of the 10/10 reviews are people saying "this film is awesome because it promotes exactly what I believe". If any part of you is outside of the evangelical/conservative American bubble, this film will be either boring or nauseating.

the True gospel shines through
michaelanthonyoliva15 November 2018
Well done. My wife and I watched it 4 times this week. We wept as if we heard the gospel for the first time all over again. We also seen places where false teaching was embedded into our lives years ago that after seeing this film exposed it for what it was: false. Thank you again for putting together a film that could be used for believers and non-believers bringing the true gospel of Jesus Christ to light.

Delivers to TRUE Gospel of Faith
ddaluise15 November 2018
This important documentary is a "must have" in every Christian library and book store. It dispels the prosperity gospel and delivers the true, message of Christ which is preached in the gospel. The "Feel good", Christian movement which is popular today, teaches that anyone can enter heaven and doesn't need to live a sanctified life here on earth. This is in complete contrast to the Bible which is the only, living true word of Christ. I was surprised to see several of the pastors from my church in this documentary! What a joy it's been to share this video with other congregants of my church!
