Rare and underrated
shresthadavid20 November 2020
I don't know why meaningful movies like this gets so low ratings and low popularity these days while some big label Sci fi and stupid unrealistic superhero movies get huge attention for nothing. This movie, if you watch it carefully and with a little patience, goes straight to your heart and leaves you with a blend of emotions which you can't put into words easily. Yeah its somewhat slow paced and has some flaws throughout the story. But, movies like this ones are rare to find these days.

GOOD MOVIE WITH GREAT PERFORMANCES
andreascaloni18 April 2021
Dreamland is about a teen bounty hunter that is torn between helping or capturing a seductive fugitive bank robber hiding in his small town during the Great Depression. The movie is a well made drama with an interesting direction. There are two great performances from Margot Robbie and Finn Cole. Dreamland isn't always gripping but it is still a good and entertaining ride.

Rating: 6,9.

Like someone has already written...

This movie isn't bad at all... stop please to give reversed ratings! Referring to 2019 movies for example Shazam! Has 7 and this one 5,8.... It's ridiculous. This way You don't give a good service to the cinema world because it's like you're telling them "We want and we like only silly movies!".

It was the 1930s and the boy still dreamed of finding his father.
TxMike19 March 2021
There are several important characters but the story really revolves around two of them. Finn Cole plays 17-yr-old Eugene Evans, his dad was an alcoholic and left when Eugene was a small boy. Eugene got one postcard from his dad, praising the beaches on the Mexico Gulf Coast. As Eugene grew up with a stepdad he never lost his dreams of finding dad. In his dreamland.

Margot Robbie is the other as Allison Wells, on the run and wanted for a bank robbery and a shooting in Missouri. She ends up in Eugene's barn, he helps conceal her and nurse her gunshot wound. He was already enthralled with stories of bank robbers so meeting her was almost a natural for him.

Eventually they needed to go on the run, much of the meat of the story involves that. The story is narrated 20 years later by Eugene's half sister in 1955. After the movie was over I went back and re-watched the first 5 minutes or so, there is a lot covered that is more meaningful after watching the whole movie. Shot entirely in New Mexico.

My wife and I watched it at home on DVD from our public library. This is a good movie, it seems that the negative reviewers just could not get into the story.

outlaw on the run
ferguson-612 November 2020
Greetings again from the darkness. Outlaws on the run have been fertile ground for movies over the years, and young director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte and writer Nicolas Zwart give the genre their best shot (pun intended). The easiest comparisons are probably Sam Peckinpah's THE GETAWAY (1972), Jonathan Demme's SOMETHING WILD (1986), and Arthur Penn's Oscar nominated classic BONNIE AND CLYDE (1969). However, given the style of this film, Terrence Malick's BADLANDS (1973) was likely more of an influence for the filmmakers.

Phoebe Evans (as voiced by Lola Kirke, GONE GIRL, daughter of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke) is our narrator, and from 1955 she recounts the story of her half-brother Eugene. Most of what she tells takes place twenty years earlier - 1935 Dust Bowl Texas during the Great Depression. Finn Cole ("Animal Kingdom") stars as Eugene, and we pick up a few years after his dad left the family behind and headed for what he expected would be an easier life in Mexico. Mother Elizabeth (Kerry Condon, "Breaking Bad") is now re-married to local Deputy George Evans (Travis Fimmel, LEAN ON PETE) and his bad haircut, and they now have a young daughter Phoebe (the magical smile of Darby Camp, THE CHRISTMAS CHRONICLES). Eugene reads Detective stories and mostly tries to stay out of George's way, while Phoebe is a curious little sister, easily the most intelligent of the lot.

One fateful day, Eugene's beloved detective stories come to life. After a local bank robbery turns violent, he discovers Allison Wells (two-time Oscar nominee Margot Robbie, I TONYA) hiding in his barn, with a bullet in her leg. Despite the $10,000 reward on her head, Allison sweet talks young Eugene into keeping her whereabouts secret, and helping her plot an escape. She swears she didn't kill anyone and rationalizes the bank robbery by blaming the government for letting people suffer hard times. Eugene may or may not buy her story, but he recognizes this is the most excitement he's likely to ever have in his life ... plus, he's smitten.

During the first half of the film, we follow Eugene as he helps Allison and holds the secret. When the second half kicks in, we find ourselves along for the ride as the two are on the run from the law, including Eugene's stepfather George. Along the way director Joris-Peyrafitte includes some flashbacks to the botched bank robbery giving us a look at Allison's "Clyde", Perry Montroy (played by Garrett Hedlund). There are also numerous artsy flashes of coastline, supposedly representing Allison and Eugene's landing spot should they escape. Of course, we know where this is headed - a shootout finale. Filmed in New Mexico, we do get the feel of the hard life fought by those during this era, including the powerful and devastating dust storms that require gas masks to prevent suffocation. The film is watchable thanks to the performances and atmosphere, though it's not at the level of similar type movies listed earlier.

Good Actors But poor story and directing
idrismovloodi21 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The actors are very good, but the story of the film was not interesting. It is strange that during the film, Margo Robbie could not even walk due to a foot injury, but in the last sequence, the sequence in the forest, she somehow escaped as if she were a track and field champion.😄

Never reaches 88mph
MrSpark18 November 2020
I was waiting for this movie to come out, kept hitting some other 2019 Dreamland staring Stephen McHattie. Anyway, I finally saw it today and I have to say it was quite disappointing.

The acting is good, Margot Robbie portrays her emotions well. The dude from Peaky Blinders (Finn Cole) is pretty good also. Travis Fimmel, was a bit underused but anyway he doesn't really move the plot as much, he honestly doesn't do anything apart from end the film. Cinematography was beautiful, nice 30's "Grapes of Wrath" vibe and the direction had its moment, a scene in a shower had an interesting angle to it.

The problem with this film is it lacks any real character development, a pointless narrator giving random info at some point doesn't really give depth to it. I never connected with any character. Honestly, the plot could have gotten really interesting and exciting but it never reaches 88 mph (Back to the future reference for anyone that didn't get it)

I would recommend this for anyone that is in quarantine and doesn't have anything better to do. Or if you're a fan of Margot or Finn (Peaky Blinders dude).

Cheers

There is no one in the barn
nogodnomasters28 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The story centers on Eugene Evans (Finn Cole) growing up on a dirt and dirt storm farm in very rural Bismark, Texas. He was abandoned by his real father and his mother remarried the deputy who had a daughter. She narrates as an adult, hence we know she doesn't die. Eugene likes crime and detective stories. Allison Wells (Margot Robbie) is a bank robber also wanted for murder. Like Bonnie and Clyde and Harley Quin, she is out to stick it to the man. Eugene discovers her shot and in the family barn with a price on her head.

This is a good guy loves bad girl film. Not a lot of action, mostly family type drama. Acting was fine. Plot slow most of the time.

Guide: F-word. Brief sex. Nudity (Margot Robbie)

Margot hits the lowbrow highway.
whitetowel-7478618 November 2020
With 'new' movie pickings obviously being slim this year thanks to covid, Dreamland was one oft-delayed flick I was really looking forward to checking out. Sadly, it's yet another in a long line of major 2020 filmatic disappointments.

The always wonderful Margot Robbie and some decent depression-era set cinematography are the only saving graces for this tedious, slow-moving affair that contains more plot holes than Swiss cheese, though i will refrain from divulging any spoilers for those who want to check it out.

Like an injured bird, the meandering plot just never takes flight and sadly what could've been an exciting, fast paced crime-come-road movie in the same rich vein as Bonnie and Clyde, Badlands and Road to Perdition ends up being a total snoozefest more akin to watching tarmac dry on a cold wet highway.

You know, after this letdown I can honestly say over the past couple of years I can't even remember the last time I saw a movie that actually blew me away. Regardless of the pandemic, Hollywood has clearly lost its way, in much the same way as Dreamland did after the first few minutes. The drought contnues...

I am easy to please when it comes to movies but between the over acting and the ridiculous makeup and costumes in this movie I got lost. I'm still not sure what it was supposed to be about.

Great performances from Margot Robbie, Finn Cole and Travis Fimmel.

Definitely doesn't deserve some of the reviews I have seen!

Underrated gem
aarpcats27 September 2021
In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan wrote about the apocalyptic clouds of dust that choked cattle, filled houses, killed thousands and created the labor pool of dispossessed Okies and Texans who left home in desperation to create what is now California. It didn't rain for years, not months, and the dust chased people to death.

Dreamland picture perfect rendition of the time shows why outlaws were heroes and ordinary people were driven mad to get away from home. No story ends happily in a landscape destroyed by man's own hand.

It's a grittier, less stylish Bonnie and Clyde, but no less heart breaking and doomed.

Great movie, and, OMG, can Travis Fimmel be just as menacing as an angry stepfather as he can as Ragnar.

See it,

100% not realistic
alon-dar119 November 2020
A story about nothing wrapped in some pretty scenes, an overly childish and crying "hero" and a blonde. Can you believe that a guy stays in a barn 10 meters from home with a fugitive, all lights on, burns papers at night near home in the open air without anyone seeing him? and all that while the whole city is aware of a maniac killer on the loose? and looking for the killer? Yes, that seems logical to the writer of this stupid plot. So, basically a real nothing. and please get rid of that Finn guy, he is SO annoying.

My Review and also SPOILER
StrayCat10009 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I watch tons of movies but haven't written a review in a LONG TIME but feel compelled to do so for DreamLand.

I rated this movie 6 stars basically due to two main reasons: 1) IMO it's a bit of a plot flaw for a fugitive bank robber / murderer to hide UN-detected in a barn, almost in plain sight, while entire possies are searching for her. 2) Secondly, the movie is a bit slow moving.

If it were not for the above two reasons I'd have rated DreamLand around 8 stars due to excellent acting, cast, scenery, cinematography, flash-backs, flash-forwards, etc, etc.

  • Finn Cole stole the show with his marvellous performance

Bad -Slow paced movie -no character developemnt -Travis Fimmel didin't get much time on the screen and his character didn't help the plot to move forward
  • Bad Makeup and costumes
Watch the movie if you have nothing to do . that's all i can say and for Margot she is a talented actress but her choices recently were way off the mark . I hope she deosn't destroy her career by snoozefest movies like this one .

Great movie great actors!
coreytegley24 February 2022
I don't get all the low reviews? Yes movies like this have been done before but I didn't see it like a Bonnie and Clyde movie at all. It was it's own movie. All the actors were good. Story good. Ending was alittle short but over all worth seeing if you like any of the actors and you like movies back in that era.

Poor History
westsideschl18 February 2021
Another Bonnie & Clyde non-creative rewrite. Robbing banks during the Great Depression of the '30s only this time the film's hooks are two poorly acting, but physically attractive baddies. Historically the only accuracy was in a CGI dust storm amid drought stricken plains' crop lands. Oddly, in the beginning narration says this takes place in Bismarck, most famously in North Dakota, but a few seconds later everyone is in Texas. Lots of script holes such as people coincidentally showing up at the same place despite the vastness. We lack of background on all but our main character, especially what transpires during the important robbery especially the money. And, no gas stations for vehicles that get 14mpg (can't go far on that). Ending is weird fantasy not fitting anything in the script.

Good movie to go to with yo girl
maxvonlancaster4 December 2020
Like for real, didn't even notice any inconsistencies or anything since I was not paying any attention at all. For sure, looks like the best movie Margo Robbie was in since Academy Award winning Suicide Squad (2016). I sure wish when I was 17, hot blonde snuck up into my house and stayed for a while, but hey, they call that kind of stuff "fiction" for a reason.

Wannabe "Bonnie & Clyde"
zardoz-1327 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The 1930s' era, Dust Bowl Depression, couples-in-crime saga "Dreamland" evokes better memories of Arthur Penn's "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967), a tragic take on the two star-crossed lovers who terrorized Texas until authorities mowed them down in a fusillade of gunfire. The difference between director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte's "Dreamland" and Penn's classic is the roles of the desperadoes have been reversed. Allison Wells (Margot Robbie of "Suicide Squad") is a hard-boiled heroine who shares more in common with Clyde Barrow than Bonnie Parker. Eugene Baker (Finn Cole of "Slaughterhouse Rulez") is the wide-eyed youth who marvels at Allison's bad reputation. A hopeless romantic, Eugene is more like Bonnie, because he sees the world through rose-colored glasses. The two embark on a short-lived crime spree. One survives and the other dies. Basically, "Dreamland" amounts to a nightmare more than a fantasy. Like some arthouse movies that defy expectations, "Dreamland" complicates its storyline with an adult narrator, Eugene's half-sister Phoebe (Darby Camp of 2018's "Benji"), but she is twenty years older now and romanticizes the plight of her ill-fated brother. Actress Lola Kirke provides Phoebe's adult voice. The interesting thing about her narration is its inconsistency. Phoebe couldn't have been around to witness some of Eugene and Allison's shenanigans. Meantime, this narration is reminiscent of Terence Mallick's archetypal crime couple epic "Badlands" (1973) where Sissy Spacek voiced over the events that she participated in with Martin Sheen. Freshman scenarist Nicolaas Zwart of TV's "Riverdale" and director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte break up the film's realism with fantasy in a compelling fashion. Essentially, nothing goes right for anybody, and everybody lies to each other. Presumably, Margot Robbie-who starred in as well as produced "Dreamland"-was drawn to the material, because it gave her a chance to stretch herself as an actress. The "Harley Quinn" star is not plain Jane enough to pass for a plausible desperado. Too beautiful for her own good, Robbie lacks the required abrasive edge. Mind you, she gives a good account of herself, but she doesn't behave like a murderous maven.

Eugene is a troubled youth. His father John Barker (newcomer Hans Christopher) abandoned Eugene's mother, Olivia (Kerry Condon of "Bad Samaritan"), when Eugene was five and fled to Mexico where he boozed himself into oblivion. Later, Olivia married George Evans (Travis Fimmel of TV's "Vikings"), and they had Eugene's half-sister Phoebe. When George isn't making a "Three Stooges" buffoon of himself, Eugene makes a buffoon of George. Eugene gets him fired because Eugene destroyed incriminating evidence about Allison's crimes. Eugene and George abhor each another. Eugene doesn't look up to George as a role model. Instead, he worships the memory of his dearly departed dad. Eventually, Olivia reveals the truth about John's demise to Eugene. Desperately, Eugene yearns to run away, so he can be his own man.

The sudden appearance of Allison gives him the perfect opportunity. During a botched bank robbery in Guthrie, Missouri, Allison and her tommy gun t0ting accomplice, Perry Montroy (Garrett Hedlund of "TRON: Legacy"), leave a trail of corpses behind, including an innocent nine-year girl who caught a stray bullet. Allison is horrified by this revelation. Before she can shed a tear, a policeman wounds her in the right leg. Although they make it out of town, Allison and Perry are surprised when a lone police car pursues them outside of town and a cop fatally wounds Perry. The cops also shoots holes in their radiator, and Allison leaves Perry alone to bleed to death in a desolate cornfield. She seeks refuge in a stable behind the Eugene's house.

Inclement weather sabotaged George's best efforts to be a farmer, so he has taken a job as a sheriff's deputy. When he learns about Allison's $10,000 bounty, Eugene sets out to capture her. Ironically, he stumbles upon her in their dilapidated barn that George no longer maintains. When Eugene encounters Allison, she persuades the youth to remove the slug from her thigh with a pair of tweezers. Eugene is so captivated by Allison's notoriety that he no longer wants to turn her in for the reward. Instead, she offers him $20 thousand to find some form of transportation that will get her she across the border into the sanctuary of Mexico. Since he believes his biological dad is soaking up the sun down there, Eugene insists on accompanying Allison. Despite her initial reluctance to let Eugene tag along, Allison takes a chance on the restless youth and shows him the ropes of bank robbery. In most law & order, crime couple capers, the end doesn't augur well for either protagonist. Eugene has spent his entire life deluding himself with stories about brave heroes in pulp fiction crime magazines and the grim reality of his murderous criminal exploits later sickens him. What started out as a romantic romp turns into a tragedy of blunders. Unfortunately, these lackluster characters wind up being more stereotypical than original. Eugene and Allison are trite and selfish despite the best efforts of both Margot Robbie and Finn Cole to enliven them with their personal charisma. Zwart and Joris-Peyrafitte should have fleshed out these characters and given them greater substance. Ultimately, these homicidal hellions neither win our sympathy nor our respect. Meantime, the film's gritty production values are top-notch. "Antique Roadshow" enthusiasts will drool over the vintage period tableaux and settings, especially the automobiles and furniture. "Thoroughbreds" lenser Lyle Vincent's atmospheric widescreen cinematography imbues "Dreamland" with the flavor of a National Geographic documentary, particularly when a monstrous dust storm looms ominously in the distance and dwarfs everything. The best thing about Joris-Peyrafitte direction is the spontaneity with which he orchestrates each scene, particularly a spirited community town hall dance, the second bank robbery, and the tragic finale that leaves one protagonist sprawled in an obscene puddle of blood. "Dreamland" fails to make its characters personable and their predicaments memorable, so in the long run they qualify as little more than hackneyed hysterics.

Beautifully shot coming of age tale
shawnmikedryer15 February 2021
This love story is set during one of the toughest times of our history, The Great Depression. It follows Eugene Evans, a young man struggling to find his place in the world with big dreams to live a life of adventure. When the news hits of a bank robbery nearby with one of the fugitives on the run, this peaks Eugene's interest being that the fugitive has a large bounty for her capture. As fate would have it shortly after Eugene discovers the fugitive, Allison Wells, had taken refuge in his family's garage with a gunshot wound. Allison's nature is infectious and with the growing attraction and chemistry between the two Eugene becomes torn on how to proceed, claiming the bounty or breaking bad. Left with a choice that could forever change his life and all those around him in this coming-of-age tale.

This films cinematography is second to none and the gorgeous shots of the setting throughout this movie are robust, really bringing the era's setting to life. The acting in this film is extraordinary but the lack of the same caliber script and story is noticeable. If not for fantastic performances and an absolute electric chemistry on screen between Finn Cole and Margot Robbie this may have been more forgettable. This film still impresses even with its somewhat predictable ending it manages to end uniquely enough in its own right.

I've seen better outlaw on the run movies but it's okay.
deloudelouvain10 December 2020
The negative reviews for Dreamland are a bit harsh in my opinion. It wasn't all that bad but I agree it could have been better. That said Dreamland is worth a watch. The cinematography was of good quality as was the acting. Finn Cole and Margot Robbie did what they had to do, the plot was just not helping making this movie exceptional. To me it lacks action. Lesser drama and more exciting scenes could have made it better. For an outlaw on the run movie you just need to put more crime scenes in the plot, now it just fell a bit bland, but it wasn't terrible either.
