Before there were horror movies, there were legends. Passed down through oral tradition, our earliest ancestors created colorful fables of vengeful gods, malevolent witches, and ravenous beasts lurking in the darkest corners of the night. Often told to entertain, these spooky tales also included hidden warnings about the dangers of straying from the path, disobeying one’s parents, or breaking social norms. As the years have passed between then and now, so have the stories. Horrific tales of poisoned apples have become whispered warnings to check Halloween candy for razor blades. Trolls lurking in the woods have transformed into a hook-handed murderer haunting lover’s lane.
Contemporary legends are more likely to be shared in an email forward than around the campfire, but their functions remain the same. These tales exist to help us navigate an unpredictable world and their subjects have evolved alongside our cultural fears. We’ve also updated our methods of delivery,...

Global superstar Celine Dion is getting the feature documentary treatment.
The French Canadian singer has given her blessing to a new feature documentary from Sony Music Entertainment’s Premium Content Division, in partnership with Sme Canada and Vermilion Films. The as-yet-untitled feature will be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Irene Taylor, and promotional materials claim it will “serve as the definitive feature” on the star.
Made with Dion’s full participation and support, the film will tell her life story and career accomplishments, including iconic album releases, award accolades, world tours and Las Vegas residencies.

HBO Max launched on May 27th and has been off to a pretty good start with well over 10,000 hours worth of content on the service from day one. If you’re a horror fan, you may be excited to hear that a fairly decent portion of those 10,000 hours include some of the biggest and most popular horror films of all time. So, if you haven’t subscribed yet, now might just be the time to do so.
Do you like Steven Spielberg and massive sharks eating people? If so, you’ll be delighted to hear that you can catch the entire Jaws franchise – which spans four films – on HBO Max right away. If you haven’t ever seen them, now’s a great opportunity to take a trip back in time to catch up on what was arguably the very first blockbuster movie series.

This Friday, Magnet Releasing is unleashing Michael Beach Nichols’ intriguing documentary Wrinkles the Clown in theaters and on demand. The project is centered around the mysterious figure known as “Wrinkles the Clown,” who shows up randomly to terrorize small children and even has a phone number you can call if you want to try and connect with him. In his exploration of the Wrinkles mythology, Nichols also examines the clown hysteria that was happening around the country a few years back and how the internet has changed the landscape of modern urban legends.
While at Fantastic Fest 2019, Daily Dead spoke with Nichols, who discussed what drew him to the project initially, what he uncovered during his filmmaking processing, getting Wrinkles involved in the doc, and more.
What was the initial appeal about going into this story in particular and exploring the phenomenon of Wrinkles? It does seem like right now clowns are everywhere.

A lawsuit filed against HBO by a painter who accused the studio of using his artwork without permission will move forward, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday.
Brooklyn-based artist Joe Coleman claims that his piece, “No One Can Enter the Lord’s House Except as a Child (Slenderman),” was extensively featured in the 2016 documentary “Beware the Slenderman” without his permission. According to recent court filings, Coleman’s art appears for 25 seconds in the film in a close-up shot that pans out to a scene depicting an unidentified user looking at the art on an Internet browser
While HBO filed a motion to dismiss the suit, arguing in part that its depiction of the work was “transformative” enough to justify its reproduction under fair use, the court was not “persuaded” that it was. “[HBO is] not entitled to a finding that
their use of the [painting] is transformative solely because they display the Work in an Internet browser,...

“Moonlight Sonata” will also make its broadcast debut on HBO in December 2019.
Directed by Irene Taylor Brodsky (“Beware the Slenderman”), the documentary focuses on Brodsky’s son growing up as his deaf grandfather grows old. Her son was born with the ability to hear but lost it at 4 years old. He gets cochlear implants and starts playing piano, and at 11 years old, he is set on learning Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” — the piece Beethoven wrote as he lost his hearing.

Red Arrow Studios International has secured a raft of deals for feature-length documentary “Slender Man: The Untold Story.” The true-crime documentary, about the case of two girls whose obsession with a fictional internet character was cited for their attempted murder of a friend, was picked up by Nine Network in Australia.
European sales have also been closed with Svt for Sweden, TV2 in Norway, Vtm in Belgium, and Rts for French-speaking Switzerland.
“Slender Man: The Untold Story” debuted in the U.S. on Hubbard Broadcasting’s Reelz network in January under the extended title “Slender Man Stabbing: The Untold Story,” resulting in a 54% increase in the network’s average viewing figures.
Produced by the Red Arrow-owned Dorsey Pictures for Reelz, it documents the 2014 case of two 12-year-old Wisconsin girls who lured a friend into local woods before stabbing her multiple times. The documentary follows the trial and includes exclusive interviews with police officers,...

Back in 2009, ‘Something Awful’ forum user Eric Knudsen (aka Victor Surge) created a character that would take off in more horrifying ways than could ever be imagined. Initially produced as a Creepypasta Internet meme; the tall, faceless, child consuming, suited, entity has become ingrained in the public consciousness as a modern myth in many ways but with such popularity has come tragedy. Most notably the much-publicised 2014 Waukesha, Wisconsin case, that saw the attempted murder of a young girl by her two friends, who attested they did it for Slender Man. This unsettling reality has resulted in a degree of controversy around the making of this film but the worst thing about Slender Man is not any bad taste behind its existence, rather than its inept attempts at creating something onscreen anywhere near as terrifying as the character himself or the real events surrounding him.

From bogeyman memes to Trump fans, film-makers are mining user-generated video to examine complex online ‘truths’
Is a documentary still a documentary if no original material has been shot for it? Some intriguing new releases comprising “found” YouTube clips and other online video ephemera suggest it definitely is. The resulting films can be profound and disturbing comments on how our obsession with online video is creating subcultures where myths and legends are shared and amplified. What’s really true in the “real” world doesn’t matter.
Dan Schoenbrun’s A Self-Induced Hallucination delves into the phenomenon of Slenderman, a shadowy fictional figure that started as an internet meme and is linked to some very real violence, notably the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl in Wisconsin in 2014. The Slender Man legend is one of the oldest creepypasta stories around. So old that it feels like the Sony film revolving around this character feels stale on arrival. The trailer feels like one of those Funny or Die trailers without any type of punchline. While this feels like a total cash-in on the character, the question is, do fans of the story even care? Especially after the sad story that became a HBO documentary, Beware the Slenderman
You may remember that many people were trying to make a film adaptation out of The Slender Man but had many issues where many different people claimed they were the genesis of the character. In the Press Release I received, it seems like they nailed it down (or at least credited) to Victor Surge (which is a pseudonym of Eric Knudsen). Let’s watch the trailer, shall we?

Screen Gems has released the first trailer and poster for the upcoming Slender Man horror movie. The legend of Slender Man has been around for some time and I'm surprised it took so long to get a feature film made. The movie was directed by Sylvain White (Stomp The Yard, The Losers) and it actually looks like it could be pretty creepy! Since I have a fascination with these kinds of urban legends, I'm kinda looking forward to checking this out.
For those of you not familiar with the legend, the character came from a Photoshop challenge on the Something Awful forums. The challenge tasked users to take boring or dull photos and add a nightmarish element too them. The Slender Man idea came from the mind of Eric Knudsen a.k.a. "Victor Surge," who posted a couple photos of children with a tall suited figure standing in the background.

Just like how I didn’t have any idea who Logan Paul was until this season of “Top Chef” and that whole suicide forest fiasco (and I now know enough, thanks), the whole slenderman thing mostly blew by me. Frankly, the meme probably would’ve stayed fairly niche were it not for Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier, who stabbed their best friend, as part of a plan to meet the mythical creature (the story was chronicled in the HBO doc “Beware The Slenderman“).

It didn't take long after Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser were arrested in suburban Waukesha, Wisconsin, for the local crime story to become a national obsession. In late spring 2014, Weier and Geyser, both 12, stabbed their friend Peyton Leutner 19 times and left her for dead. After the two were caught walking down the side of a highway a few hours later, the girls told police they had done it to prove their loyalty to "Slender Man," a mythological bogeyman whose crowd-sourced legend had been making its way around online forums for several years.

Anissa and Morgan were charged as adults with first-degree intentional homicide. Their fascination with Slenderman, a fictional Internet character, and its impact on the girls is the focus of the HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman, which debuts at 10 p.m. Et on Jan. 23.

Screen Gems' Slender Man horror film is moving forward with a director who was just hired to take on the challenge of bringing the modern-day urban legend to life. That director is Sylvain White, who previously directed the films Stomp the Yard and The Losers. Those films aren't really worth remembering, but White is taking on a whole new genre with Slender Man, and I hope he does something great with it and gives us something truly terrifying.
Slender Man is a scary dude, so if White can't give us a nightmarishly terrifying film then he's failed. The creature is a tall, thin frightening thing with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face. It's responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens. This is a monster that Doug Jones should play!

It’s a choice day for fans of the Slender Man character. It been revealed that the long awaited documentary Beware the Slenderman will finally air on HBO on the 23rd of January, following its debut at 2016’s SXSW. Also Sony have picked director Sylvain White to direct their big screen horrorshow featuring the internet-famous ghoul.
White has been directing TV shows since his 2010 adaptation of Andy Diggle’s The Losers and a full on horror movie sees White return to the heady days of I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer from 2006. The character of Slender Man has already featured in numerous low-to-no budget films, the best of which are to be found in the 87 part web series Marble Hornets as well as the ongoing Everyman Hybrid and Tribe Twelve. The interest surrounding Marble Hornets gave rise to Always Watching, one of the most hyped Slender Man centric films.

Latching onto the hottest internet trends of 2014, Sony has announced a director for its upcoming horror movie based on the well-dressed online boogeyman known as the Slenderman. The new film—not to be confused with HBO’s upcoming documentary Beware The Slenderman, which centers on the real-life tragedy that ensued when a pair of young girls stabbed a classmate out of a fearful fascination with the internet story—will be helmed by Stomp The Yard director Sylvain White.
It’s not clear which interpretation Sony’s Screen Gems studio will use for the character, who mostly serves to stand in the background of otherwise mundane home videos, causing static and tracking problems, and utilizing his powers to make over-excited teenagers scream “Holy shit!” in the comments whenever he appears. Also, it’s not clear how well White’s talents—which he also put to mixed effect on 2010’s ...

The story of the so-called “Slenderman stabbing” in Wisconsin isn’t the most grisly crime in recent American history (or even Wisconsin history), but it’s certainly one of the more haunting ones. A few years ago, two 12-year-old girls tried to stab their friend to death to appease the fictional internet monster known as Slenderman. Though the victim survived, the severity of the attack drove the state to decide that the girls should be tried as adults—with apparently little regard for the psychological factors that would not only make a pair of girls think this character was real, but to also convince them to try and murder a friend in his name.

If last year was Peak TV, then 2017 may go down as Peak-ier TV: The Rise of Even More TV. In January alone, NBC launches a pricey Wizard of Oz fanfic, HBO appoints a sexy new Pope and glamor (or at least very drunk celebrities) returns with the Golden Globe Awards telecast. There's plenty more to break you out of that post-holiday funk – here's what you'll be watching over the next month. (Check out our Best TV and Movies to Stream list tomorrow.)

Before we get into the major goings-on of this week’s Westworld, let’s all agree that there’s at least a tiny chance that everything we know to be true is really just an elaborate program crafted by a master manipulator who might wipe the whole thing tomorrow and start afresh. Cool?
Hey, it may sound ridiculous, but as recently as two episodes ago, Bernard thought he was your average child-grieving, co-worker-banging mammal. Now he’s a fully sentient puddle of blood and circuitry on the floor in a forgotten Westworld lab.

Did Westworld just all but say it flat-out? Do we have confirmation that William and the Man in Black are the same person shown at two different points in his life?
The long-held fan theory certainly seemed to edge closer to canon in this week’s episode, “Trace Decay,” when Ed Harris’ grizzled Man in Black recognized a blond female host left at the scene of an attack by Wyatt’s men. And savvy viewers also should have recognized the woman… as the same one who greeted William...

The 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards announced its list of nominees Monday, with HBO leading the pack with 22 nominations. ABC and Netflix received 14 nominations each, followed by FX with 12. The winners will be announced at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala in Santa Monica on Sunday, December 11. T.J. Miller will serve as the show’s host.
The awards show has been swirled in controversy since sealing an exclusive partnership with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. The surprise decision essentially turned the Critics Choice Awards into an Entertainment Weekly event. Journalists who quit the Broadcast Television Journalists Association as a result include IndieWire’s Michael Schneider, TVLine’s Michael Ausiello, Variety’s Debra Birnbaum, Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman, TV Guide Magazine’s Matt Roush, Variety’s Maureen Ryan, Media Village’s Ed Martin, and Us Weekly’s John Griffiths.

"To believe in the boogeyman isn't that hard... And they believed it was real." HBO has debuted an official trailer for the documentary Beware the Slenderman, about the myth of the Slenderman which resulted in two young girls trying to murder one of their friends to see if he was real. Does anyone know this story already? It's a true story, at least the part about the two delusional girls who believed in this myth, and the internet helped fuel their fascination with him. This doc seems to examine the before and after, looking at how it happened and what the myth of the Slenderman means, how it's even possible that something like this created online can seem so real in the minds of these two girls. This looks fascinating, and quite freaky. Here's the trailer (+ poster) for Irene Taylor Brodsky's doc Beware the Slenderman, on YouTube: Shot over...

For years now, the internet boogeyman known as Slender Man has been haunting the online world, cropping up in short stories, fan art, and any number of popular short films. The most upsetting thing to come from the character—a faceless, tall man in a suit, which has its origins on the Something Awful message boards—isn’t a particular meme or YouTube clip, though. Instead, it’s a 2014 event in which a young girl barely survived being stabbed by two of her 12-year-old classmates, supposedly at the creature’s behest.
Dubbed “the Slender Man stabbing” due to the two girls’ belief that the internet meme had ordered them to kill their friend, the case is still making its way through the Wisconsin courts.
